Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is a sublimely designed celebration not only of its own storied past, but of the joys of gaming itself. Epic in scale, driven by an emotive story, and overflowing with compelling action and absorbing activities, Infinite Wealth’s bold ambition pays off handsomely, resulting in one of the finest open-world adventures ever made.
Clair Obscur feels big, it feels important, it feels like a game for now, that you’ll be thinking about for years to come. Expedition 33 might be built off of the groundwork laid by decades of creatives that came before, but its impact is wholly singular and essential in its own right.
At the end of its massive runtime, Metaphor: ReFantazio never suffers from pacing issues and tells a captivating story that stirs your imagination. With fantastic additions to the familiar Press Turn battle system and one of my favorite casts in a long time, this is one fantasy you won’t want to miss.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is a fantastic expansion that almost feels like a sequel with all of the content that’s packed into it. There’s a huge cast of monsters to hunt with lots of new equipment to keep you going for another year at least and along with the promise of post-launch content like the base game received, you’re in for another treat when you make the journey to Hoarfrost Reach.
God of War is a modern masterpiece and one of the best games to grace the Playstation 4 library. It’s a sweeping tale of loss and new beginnings and one that echoes the nature of the God of War series. With a stunning soundtrack and many gameplay systems to sink your teeth into, there’s something here for everyone and a game that will keep you engrossed for many hours.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a masterpiece in every single way. A thought provoking storyline, unbelievable music and plenty of customization. This is Ori bigger and better and a strong contender for game of the generation.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the perfect example of what a talented, passionate team who takes the time to listen to community feedback is capable of doing in gaming. They made all the right choices where it counted by getting the right people for the job, from the storytellers, actors, technical developers, and more. What we’re left with is a memorable gaming experience that provides more value than many games which had a lot more money thrown at them, and the community has almost universally shown their appreciation for that. There isn’t much more to say other than more of the same, please.
As a complete package, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is mind-blowing. The first game was an interesting foundation, but the long-awaited sequel stands easily alongside the best RPGs of the last decade. It tells an exciting yet emotional story, and the world is a joy to explore, but it’s the level of immersion that’s created by all of its interconnected systems that’s unlike anything I’ve experienced before.
With Dragon’s Dogma 2, Capcom continues to solidify its reputation as one of the industry’s premier developers. The sequel delivers an incredible, continent-spanning odyssey filled with monsters to battle and mysteries to explore - rewarding player discovery and backing up its captivating sense of adventure with refined, enjoyable combat. Dragon’s Dogma 2 is one of the best fantasy RPGs of the modern age and will no doubt prove a strong contender for game of the year.
Astro Bot is a breath of fresh air from PlayStation’s first parties, as it truly encapsulates that old-school feeling, where Sony didn’t have the same formulaic game and took chances on other genres. Team Asobi knocked it out of the park with a game that is just tremendously fun to play.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard is a phenomenal return to form for BioWare. The story is well-paced and the cast of characters are the trademark BioWare staple of fully-realised, but it’s in the newly action-oriented combat where things truly shine.
Elden Ring Nightreign gripped me from start to finish and constantly fills my every waking thought. This is a game that will have me glued to my chair for many nights to come.
The Outer Worlds is a devotedly single-player experience where player choice, witty dialogue, detailed worlds and interesting characters are paramount and may be Obsidian Entertainment’s magnum opus.
The modern ports of Final Fantasy IX are a great way to play one of the greatest RPGs of its generation, despite a few technical shortcomings that weren’t present in the original.
Shadowbringers is the highest point of Final Fantasy XIV to date and it brings some much needed changes, two exciting new classes and an unforgettable story that rivals even the very best Final Fantasy stories. An excellent music score elevates the package higher and with the promise of a 24 man raid series based on Nier Automata, there’s a lot more to look forward to.
With a wonderful cast of characters and a narrative that will hook you to the end, it’s a story well worth seeing to its conclusion and beyond. There’s a meaty post game to contend with that expands the story even more and you’ll find yourself with something to always do.
The first episode of the Final Fantasy VII Remake series gets off to a strong start, and despite the odd graphical blemish, pacing issue and bizarre plot addition, it's hard not to be optimistic about what comes next.
Xenoblade Chronicles is one of the best RPGs out there, and the remake means people can enjoy the game on a console that finally does it justice.
Stray is a fantastic exploration game, and the execution of playing as a cat has paid off extremely well. Stray is a solid fit regardless of age, and its low cost is justifiable to the amount of content and enjoyment you get from the game.
With Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Nintendo has delivered a beautifully designed, charmingly realized, and thoroughly joyful jaunt through another fantastical universe. Sporting razor-sharp gameplay - positively bursting with character and personality - Wonder is a celebration of gaming in its purest form, while still boasting one of the most unique and evolutionary experiences in genre history.
