While Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising doesn’t have the stamp of undeniable greatness, it does have truly amazing visuals. The writing/translation, music, and most of combat is rather good too. Town-building feels meaningful as it rewards you with significant growth in combat abilities. Despite a slow, unimpressive start and getting lost in dungeons, Rising builds into an enjoyable action RPG. It’s an easy game, suitable for casual or younger players. It’s also very linear and repetitive, but some players may find such simplicity relaxing. If Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes can boast similar strengths, I’d be curious to play the longer game when it releases in 2023. Hundred Heroes isn’t planned or confirmed for the Switch yet, but if we’re lucky, I will plead for a larger font than what Rising uses. (On the Switch Lite, text can be painfully small.) Oh, and fewer fetch quests, please! Now 14 hours into the game, I’m guessing the end is only a few hours away. Instead of rushing, I’ve decided to play in short sessions at leisurely pace. That might be the best way to enjoy Rising.
Overall, Num One is very well put together. I liked it; it’s fun to play and is well made with a functional and beautiful UI. The game is accessible to the color-blind and is a unique spin on the traditional matching game. And you can replay the tutorial any time you want to! If I could change one thing, I would make it so every so many matches you make, you can delete a block that’s clogging up your space, that would make all the difference to me. Super fun, very cheap, and a new twist on a classic favorite.
All in all, Lost Nova is a wholesome sweet chilled-out game that’s a delight to play. Of course, it won’t suit all gamers as the relaxed atmosphere, and the gameplay wouldn’t suit players that are heavily into combat since it combats free. However, it’s a fun, enjoyable trip to a distant planet with beautiful artwork and cute characters with wholesome vibes. If all of that looks good to you, I definitely recommend playing Lost Nova and helping Mia return home.
Unfortunately, As Far As The Eye felt like work playing it. For me, strategy games tread a line between letting you execute a satisfying plan and responding to surprise threats. However, with As Far As The Eye’s constant violent natural disasters and the need for upkeep on every game element, it gets quite tiresome to always be on the defensive and rush to the next Halt. A strategy game should encourage long play sessions with lots of deep planning of your next move and not having to rush because of some threat you have no control over. Apart from that, when you die, there isnt any post-game analysis, recorded stats, or even the ability to scroll the map and see where you went wrong and learn from it. All of that makes me think that hex-based strategy and roguelike genres should not be mixed together in a game!
Overall I enjoyed the game. It is always interesting to experience new cultures that you didn’t know much about, which was definitely the case here. For me, at least, the game is definitely worth a look for its unique look at a group of people that you don’t hear about often unless you live in that part of the world
Dungeons of Dreadrock is a solid dungeon crawling adventure that will appeal to gamers looking to enjoy a good puzzler in bite-sized chunks. A few small niggles propped up like gotcha mechanics and the controls being a bit finicky. However, none of these severely deterred the experience. When I entered the mountain, I was pretty hooked on the experience to its conclusion, thanks to the game’s uniquely crafted puzzles. This feels like a fun game to also share with a loved one if you want to try to tackle the puzzles together. Whether you’re a fan of older dungeon crawlers or new, this adventure is well worth your time.
I feel conflicted after roughly five hours with Vesper: Zero Light Edition. I won’t soon forget its gorgeous backdrops and searing colors, but I also wasn’t hooked by its gameplay loop. This could be exactly what you are looking for, for those who enjoy stealth games. As for me, I will remember it less for its mechanics and more as if it were a painting.
I recommend Dandy & Randy DX if you’re playing alone looking for that simple retro fix that might just tickle the nostalgia memories. I highly recommend it if you want something to play with together. Sure the premise is simple but I can’t think of any other title that has this theme that lets you play locally. Playing games together can solidify some memories that will last forever. Know a friend who’s feeling a little blue? Buy this game then take the Switch over to them. It might be the pick up they need. Dandy & Randy DX doesn’t push any gaming boundaries. But this is an absolutely solid and uplifting game that is well worth the price of entry.
Overall, this game is pretty; it’s interesting and different. But sometimes, the solutions were just so far from what you would assume the answer would be that it made it super difficult to continue. It wasn’t even just a matter of getting used to changing forms on every screen to see what was different from each perspective; it was more like trying to think of answers to puzzles illogically. The item trapped in the ice was not removed by the ice pick; it instead had to be removed by sunlight. A chamber filled with crystals was not broken apart by something like an axe but a tuning fork. Since I am not very experienced with games like this, I would have loved a hint system to help me through the weirder answers. That being said, this game is beautiful and interesting. I would certainly be interested in playing the other two Panmorphia games, just to see all the different ways that each of the four transformations are used. That being said, I would not recommend this game to anyone new to the genre, as this game has no tutorial.
The Scorchfarer is a nice visual novel that implements some interesting UI and story elements. It’s not for me, but I do think it’s worth a spin. I recommend it for the lovers of end of the world stories and those focused on character interactions.
While I did manage to find a few things to nitpick there is no denying I kept coming back to this game run after run. The random generation of the character types and level design is so enormous that every attempt at taking down the castle felt different. On top of that, the controls are tight and easy to use and the game is overall enormous fun to play. Rogue Legacy 2 is everything I loved about the original title with so much more added to it. Unless you absolutely hate the rogue-lite genre there is plenty of incentive to jump into the sequel thanks to its accessibility features and general refinements to the gameplay. Even years from now Rogue Legacy 2 is sure to solidify itself as one of the best in the rogue-lite genre. Well at least until the next game that is.
What started as a game that didn’t click turned into something quite special. Discovery is this game’s greatest strength, heading into the unknown to researching everything you find and coping with the tough challenges that come. It feels very much like a first entry in a promising gaming series. The crafting and exploration are fun but the combat feels awkward and unforgiving. The Serpent Rogue is a unique crafting adventure which will most likely appeal to players that have the time and the patience to overcome the high barrier to entry. If this all sounds good to you, The Serpent Rogue may be the gaming tonic you’re looking for.
Winkeltje: The Little Shop is fun to play. It’s an enjoyable gameplay loop, open the shop in the morning, sell items, and close the shop at the end of the day. Once the shop is closed for the day, you can rearrange the stock and take care of the crops you are growing, ready for another business day. It can get repetitive if you play for long sessions. However, Winkeltje’s specialisation system does help to keep it feeling fresh and interesting.
Overall, this game was pretty fun. It’s hard to make an educational game that is actually exciting to play, but Grammarian Ltd managed. As I was playing, the game was regularly being updated with new letters, so I hope these will fix the little grammatical errors and things that caused all my issues with the game. My second playthrough had different notes and letters than I got the first time around, and none of them had the mistakes that I saw the first time. This is a great sign for the future of this game. I think that Grammarian Ltd is a great idea as a gift for those still in school and those looking to learn a little more about English, especially as a second language!
Bugsnax is a certainly different take on the adventure puzzle genre. Catching the Bugsnax is fun at the beginning of the game, but after 8 to 10 hours, the repetitiveness of the game’s main task drags it all down, which is a pity. Overall, Bugsnax was fun while it lasted, but it wouldn’t be a game I’d be rushing to play again.
I can happily say that I have enjoyed my time with Parkasaurus. It’s less about beholding the majesty of the dinosaurs, and more about silly fun. Park management elements feel much tighter and snappier than I expected. I watched new exhibits populate the map. Arranged flowerpots, donation boxes, and benches. I witnessed my losses slowly turn to profits. And most importantly: I put hats on my dinosaurs! Sure, there are some drawbacks with the Switch version, including occasional stutters, small text, and inexact controls, but none of those detracts from the irresistible charm of Parkasaurus.
Dysmantle may not seem like much from its appearance but there is a highly addictive survival experience here. Survival games are often hit and miss, sometimes the survival elements are a bit too much and more often than not the experience eventually dissolves into tedium. But I didn’t get that here, I found myself pretty keen to boot this game up over and over and set off into the unknown to see what I discovered. While overall game progression is slow, you always seem to unlock something through every play session. I never felt in a hurry to get off the island. I was pretty content to take in everything on offer. If you’re looking for zombie-infested island adventure alone or with a friend, you can’t go wrong with Dysmantle. I highly recommend it!
Arise: A Simple Story – Definitive Edition is a bittersweet tale of an old man’s life and the memories he shared with a partner. It relays a tale of love, heartbreak, hardship, and an emotional journey through his life. It’s a story that stayed on my mind well after the closing credits. The platforming sections may prove fiddly; however, the storyline, narrative and visuals make up for the platforming shortcomings.
Lumote: The Mastermote Chronicles is a good relaxing puzzler that will appeal to those looking for a new head scratcher to enjoy on the sofa with a warm drink, in bed or in the bath. Just be careful you don’t drop your Switch in there. The slow pace won’t appeal to everyone and hunting for collectables proved more frustrating than fun for me. I enjoyed Lumote the most when I was taking my time solving the puzzles and taking in the calm vibes this game gave off with its cute noises and botanical appearance. If that sounds good to you then go pick it up.
Lila’s Sky Ark has many qualities of a masterpiece; the music is beautiful; the visuals are delightful, but it fumbles with its writing. If Lila’s Sky Ark is a poem, then it’s not a cohesive one. I still don’t know how I feel about Lila or her story; however, I had fun while playing it, and I know I will be listening to the soundtrack for many months. This game is undoubtedly a labor of love. If you want to get lost in a colorful pixel dreamscape, then you’ll feel right at home with Lila on the Rainbow Ark.
