5 / 10.0 - Twin Mirror
Dec 12, 2020

Twin Mirror ditches the episodic format and lasts roughly five hours or so. This may sound oxymoronic but it simultaneously feels too short and too long. Too short because there’s some interesting characters that feel underdeveloped. Too long because of how predictable the mystery is.

I think that the inclusion of cross-play will be welcomed by all gamers. This certainly guarantees that the wait time for getting into any matches will be all but gone.

Starting off was a hurdle. The camera felt really loose and when adjusting it, it made things a bit more problematic due to needing to see my next areas to progress through or else I’d be killed.

The game is not without its problems. I, honestly, did not like the game at first. As a gamer used to fast-paced action titles with cars that can go 0-100 mph in under 5 seconds, this game was like a tortoise racing a hare.

6 / 10.0 - Project CARS 3

Unfortunately, the elation didn’t last very long and my first actual race was much more disappointing. I think I placed in the last position, but it was hard to tell as there seemed to be an endless stream over cars over-taking me at every corner so I have no idea how many were actually in the race. I didn’t even get a chance to check where on the HUD it gave you your position because I was concentrating so much on getting around each corner without just smashing my number plate into the barriers – even on the first track there were a LOT of corners. They could’ve given me a basic oval track to practice on for a while first!

6.3 / 10.0 - Marvel's Avengers
Sep 6, 2020

Let’s talk about the story! As we all know from the initial trailer, the game opens up with a massive Avengers-themed Con where the biggest fans gather in celebration of the Earth’s Heroes. The main narrative of Marvel Avengers is told through the eyes of Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel. Kamala is an interesting character to play as because at the beginning of the game, she has no powers and is just an average you teenager with a big love for comic books. As we know though, this celebration is disrupted and a catastrophic event happens, which is blamed on The Avengers, causing them to disband. The main game takes place a few years later with the focus of reuniting the team and persuading the world of The Avenger’s innocence.

6.5 / 10.0 - Madden NFL 21

The first and more notable introduction to the game series is The Yard. When you were a kid, you probably had a nice summer evening or two where you and a group of friends would go outside and play a round of flag football. The rules are different and the way you play is almost more unique, but the heart and soul of the game is very much the same. That is what The Yard is trying to tackle here. You play 6 vs. 6 and depending on where you play, the rules can be pretty different. Like the backyard football I played as a kid, once the play starts, defenders have to call out Mississippis before they can rush the QB. Depending on how you customize your team makes a big difference as well. Honestly, this mode is the saving grace that Madden 2021 has going for it.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water follows multiple protagonists trying to solve a mystery that intertwines with one another. During these investigations, they encounter supernatural elements and to battle them, a camera is used to deal various amounts of damage to “kill” the ghosts. Upgrades to the camera are gained that can cause faster film reloading or film that does more damage at expense of slower reload speed.

7 / 10.0 - Gal*Gun Returns

Once you’re done with the game’s main story, the fun doesn’t end there! You can revisit the story in order to unlock the plethora of portraits, clothing for the girls; you can also jump into a “fantasize” mode where you’ll need to get the girls into the right position in order to… “observe” them.

The biggest thing about this game is how much I actually enjoyed it. It was easy and simple and not something I thought was going to have much longevity but as I gained another new power or levelled up my stats, i was finding myself unable to turn it off and wanting to beat just one more mission. Think of those addictive games such as Spyro or Crash Bandicoot, then simplify them even more and you’re probably able to picture Ben 10: Power Trip.

You are able to move in three dimensions in a 2.5 dimension action-racing arcade game, think of it like driving in lanes. These lanes can take you all over the place depending on the level.

Once you take control of your first character, you are free to do what you want to do. You have the ability to scan and recruit literally anyone you see. I thought this was amazing at first, but after a while, I noticed the flaw in this idea. I got to the point where I simply did not care anymore.

7.5 / 10.0 - Far Cry 6
Oct 15, 2021

Let there be no mistakes though. While there have been some changes to Far Cry, the formula is still pretty much the same it has always been for the Far Cry series. Upon getting thru the tutorial and the beginning area (a small island), you will be unloaded onto a giant map full of different activities to do.

Don’t worry if you think that Cold War veers too far off from that exhilarating element of Call of Duty you have grown up with, it is still there in heaps!

The optimal way of playing Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is to gather up your friends and form your own squad. I cannot stress enough how much different of a game Breakpoint is when you have friends to play with. Each Outpost is a fun new puzzle for you to figure out. As there are 4 different classes for you to choose from, You and your friends can all essentially play as different types of characters. The excitement of your team surrounding a base and figuring out the plan is the most fun part of the game. Especially as you all have your own gadgets such as drones to aid you in your systematic massacre of a small outpost.

When you take a step back and realize that this game is 10 years old, you can appreciate so much about it, however, the problems that this 10-year-old game have are glaringly obvious! In multiple parts of the game where there would be some type of event that would happen, I would find that my guy would be running around as my partners would just stand there doing nothing, or even better running into a wall! They were also not always the most helpful at reviving each other when one would fall. I am not sure how much I can complain though as there are times when you may be alongside 2-3 comrades as well as the ghosts wreaking havoc in the room, that is a LOT for the AI to comprehend all at once.

7.5 / 10.0 - Battletoads

One of the best strongest points is the fact that if you’re playing solo or with a friend, you can switch between Rash, Zitz and Pimple by pressing the corresponding d-pad arrow (except the shmups and platforming levels). This gives players a chance to try out all three characters and also a lifeline if the current character they are using is near death, they can switch with a full health character.

Ultimately, The Last of Us 2 is a must-play title on the PS4. The sheer quality of the game on a visual and technical level all but guarantees that. I was amazed at what was possible on base PS4 hardware. The shortcomings of the story as a whole, especially in the denouement, left me with a feeling of disappointment. I am grateful I undertook this journey with these characters but in the end, the pay-off doesn’t live up to its predecessor and the ending, in particular, does not stick the landing that Naughty Dog intended.

I would say that Paper Mario: The Origami King is a nice return to form that the last couple of Paper Mario games seemed to have lost. The game shows a lot of charm between it’s lush and beautiful landscapes as well as the fun child-like humour. I personally feel like it still doesn’t quite hit the same strides that games like Bowser Inside Story hit, but this is a great start.

Between the platforming, every level features a smaller-scale puzzle level. These can be some simple puzzles like pushing a bomb to dynamite. There’s some fun mini-games like the whack-a-mole equivalent puzzle.
