While the Tools of Torment chapter has a sleek design and characters that might appeal to strategic players, it is far from being one of Dead by Daylight's best. The Skull Merchant's power doesn't always owe itself to balance, causing developers to make frequent, heavy changes since release. Overall, Tools of Torment is a chapter that's worth it if you particularly love the killer or are interested in her perks; otherwise, it's largely forgettable along Dead by Daylight's growing roster.
Players who want to relive that original experience without having to hunt down a classic console and game will be served a high-octane dose of nostalgia.
Bandle Time is still a wonderful and pleasantly surprising gameplay experience that will appeal to cozy gaming enthusiasts and League players alike. Even for those like myself, who don't actively play League of Legends but has some familiarity with its expanding world, Bandle Tale acknowledges its interconnective history while embracing a more relaxed and quirky approach.
Helldivers 2 is one of the most refreshing multiplayer experiences out there and easily the best PvE extraction shooter to date. Its robust shooting mechanics and unique gameplay ideas make up for a stellar moment-to-moment experience. Despite being plagued with a plethora of game-breaking issues, Helldivers 2 feels like a solid multiplayer experience, which, for the first time, paints an optimistic picture of PlayStation's live-service-centric future.
Persona 3 Reload feels like a first draft of the intricately crafted stories, characters, and social sim elements of latter Persona games. While the visual and technical overhaul makes it pretty to look at, satisfying to hear, and fun to play, its story, characters, and social sim elements feel inadequate. Still, it's not difficult to appreciate Persona 3 Reload for what it is as long as you keep your expectations in check.
The Last of Us Part 2's No Return mode may not have an in-depth progression system nor offer rewards that keep you hooked for hundreds of hours, but it's still a lot of fun to play. The moment-to-moment gameplay is satisfying, and if you're a fan of Resident Evil's Mercenary mode, this could be your next jam - for a little while, at least.
Rogue Trader sets itself out from the crowd, both in its franchise and its genre. It feels unique. It’s not just boltguns and chainswords slapped onto Pathfinder. The thought and care to make it have its own identity has been taken, and I hope Owlcat follows through further with it. ‘Cos it works great.
If there’s one game that you pick up for the Meta Quest 3, it should be Asgard’s Wrath 2. Aside from providing more than 100 hours of gameplay, it really showcases just how much the headset can do in a full-scale RPG adventure. While the story might not be enough to draw you in alone, the immersive combat and the presence you have in the world is an experience you shouldn’t pass up. And with a rotation of characters, combat styles and more, there’s plenty to keep you interested throughout the game’s runtime.
Whilst far from being a massive game, Steamworld Build is undeniably likable. Its genre mixing is ambitious and well-executed. It is an interesting settlement builder and a quirky Dungeon Keeper-like. But combined, it’s a unique and deeply enjoyable experience; although one that also feels like it’s lacking long-term goals to make the sandbox mode feel worthwhile. Despite this, the game as a whole is worth playing for fans of the Steamworld franchise, and anyone who enjoys a laid-back town-building game with minimal stress.
Payday 3 provides an extremely enjoyable experience, especially when playing with a squad of friends. Despite minor problems that can become slightly frustrating, we didn't experience anything game-breaking that should deter players from not purchasing. It needs improvement, sure, but overall, this is a solid outing, packed with new experiences to enjoy, so we wouldn't have any issues recommending it as an epic introduction to the series.
There’s very little to dislike about Loddlenaut. It ticks all the boxes of an ideal cozy game, with adorable companions, a calming atmosphere, and uncomplicated mechanics. You’ll be zapping away goop and caring for Loddles during this roughly 4-5 hour clean-up adventure, making it a great game to curl up with on a lazy afternoon. Its only downsides are its upgrade limitations and bare-bones story, which could have seen this little indie float to the top. Despite this, if you’re looking for your next wholesome game, and one with an ever-important message, you and Loddlenaut will get along swimmingly.
Persona 5 Tactica sends off Phantom Thieves in style. It's your "one more time with feelings" adventure that packs many memorable moments that do these beloved characters justice. Add to that an endearing art style, satisfying gameplay, and spectacular music, and you have one of the best games of the year in a year that has already produced so many incredible games.
During a time when depictions that honor the history and majesty of the Middle East are more important than ever, this window into that ancient world provides enlightenment to some players and critical representation to others. By forcing players to have patience and rewarding their creativity, Assassin's Creed Mirage in turn is making sure that every aspect of this masterpiece is seen and savored.
C-Smash VRS is a game that I never knew I needed until I played it. It's an incredibly addictive game that provides players with a good workout without even realizing it. The multiplayer component is an absolute blast, and the single-player content is equally as good. Add all this to the fact that it has a fantastic soundtrack and superb art style, making this one of the best PSVR 2 games currently available. Don't pass up on this one.
You do not need to be a League of Legends fan at all to be a Song of Nunu fan. The adventure that you go through with Nunu and Willump is one that is absolutely worth having. The story remains focused the entire way with humorous character interactions and the gameplay and puzzles definitely outweigh the very weak combat system. Song of Nunu is a great example of a game that gives the word "adventure" meaning.
There's still room for improvement in this franchise when it comes to the Creation Suite, and additional stories in the offline Career Mode could give players even more to engage with, but these hits never drag down the overall experience. It already feels fair to say this may be the best MMA fighting game of all time, and UFC 5 could hold that title for years to come.
Sonic Superstars isn't going to set the world on fire. It's not going to be in the Game of the Year conversation at the end of the year (especially not after the year we've had). But what it is, is a really fun 2D Sonic game that feels like both a return to a simpler time for the series and a way for the series to advance forward with new innovations.
Colossal Order already had a winning formula to work from thanks to the original Cities: Skylines. This sequel deepens the level of interactivity available to players, with more tiles to build on and more complex systems to design and implement. New players might need a little persistence to get to grips with the mechanics, but you’ll be able to transform a meek little hamlet into a sprawling concrete jungle — it’ll just take you a while to get there. Those returning to the series will feel right at home, with plenty of adjustments that mark Cities: Skylines 2 as a natural evolution for the series.
There's a reason why HWU2 will still entertain new, casual, and veteran racing players, and it's the excitement of the unique tracks that will launch them into the stratosphere, created content, and crossover cars arriving soon. It will keep you playing for a couple of hours until your Switch dies, but it's still a worthwhile addition to your library regardless of the platform.
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd probably isn't going to make a dent in your game of the year list, but it doesn't need to. In a year filled with absolutely incredible games that are reshaping the very nature of games as we know it, Hellboy: Web of Wyrd is just a really fun brawler that you can beat in a few days and is pretty enjoyable overall. Pick this up when you've hit the end of your backlog (probably sometime in 2035) and you'll have a grand old time.
