9 / 10.0 - Madden NFL 18
Aug 7, 2017

Madden NFL 18 brings a lot more improvements than not. The presentation of the game has been upgraded, though still scattered with some imperfections. Not many, but some. The improvement of Ultimate Team with the MUT Squad is a welcomed one and adds more depth and life to the mode. The addition of Longshot to the mix also brings a true campaign mode to the Madden franchise, which adds some value to the overall package. All in all, EA Tiburon continues to find new ways to improve their Madden series and so far, at least in the last few years, they're doing a good job of bringing worthwhile experiences to gamers. Definitely check this one out.

7 / 10.0 - Windjammers
Aug 7, 2017

Windjammers is a solid game that is dumb arcade fun from the 90s. While it certainly has some arcade charm to it through its intense gameplay, it isn't meant for long periods of play, which might be a turn-off for some gamers.

9.5 / 10.0 - Call of Duty: WWII
Aug 6, 2017

Call of Duty: WW2 is the best Call of Duty in years. Bombastic story, killer grounded multiplayer, and a dark and scary Zombies make up one of the most complete and enjoyable Call of Duty experiences in years.

8.5 / 10.0 - Giraffe and Annika

It is a refreshing take on an adventure and rhythm game and I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.

Konami Castlevania Anniversary Collection is a solid release, even without the best of the bunch, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Getting authentic ports of the classic series, while adding some small save features, and graphical options help to sell the package. The bonus book might be the best part of it, though, so that's something to look forward to if you're going to purchase it.

While this collection has about every iteration of Space Invaders that was popular back in its day, and in modern times, the concept of Space Invaders has grown old. For avid collectors out there, like yours truly, this is nice to see on a modern system and all in one game. For newbies looking to try out old video games, there may not be as much joy to be had.

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles has an earnest heart and an anxious mind. Brilliant landscapes and gorgeous vistas create a waking daydream while economic riddles and perfunctory direction recall the drag of reality. Yonder's strides, despite an admirable form, don't seem to take it anywhere.

8 / 10.0 - Tacoma
Aug 1, 2017

An abandoned space station, impetuous corporate interests, a curious A.I.  — Tacoma's facade floats between charming futurism and abrasive, old-fashioned avarice. This may seem like inhospitable space to explore the depths of benevolence, but the power of identity and humanity are alive and well supported inside of Tacoma's twirling science fiction architecture.

Candleman: The Complete Journey is a very nicely developed 3D platformer that has a great hook or "gimmick" that it introduces immediately and utilizes throughout.

Simply put, Metroid: Samus Returns is an excellent game. It honors the past and adds a lot of great new gameplay elements. The Metroid series strives in 2D, and Samus Returns is another clear demonstration of exactly that.

I saw this experience as Monster Hunter meets Pokemon (which are two of my favorite series.) and if you consider yourself a fan of either of these, then you will probably find joy in giving this title a try no matter what age you are.

Eclipse: Edge of Light is a fun exploration game that will certainly keep you in awe at times without pulling you away with overcomplicated controls or a messy narrative. It simply asks you to traverse the alien landscape, discover a small narrative along the way, and be there. It doesn't do more than that, nor does it do less than that, which is acceptable for a VR experience.

9 / 10.0 - Hey! Pikmin
Jul 27, 2017

As my first Pikmin experience, I really enjoyed Hey! Pikmin for a variety of reasons and found little wrong with it. Whether you have played a Pikmin game before or not, or are just looking for a fun game that's not too easy and certainly not too hard, give this one a go.

The Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is a wonderful recreation of three of the most beloved PS1 games. Not only is it beautiful, but it's a fantastic trip down memory lane for gamers looking for that quick hit of nostalgia. While it's certainly not as challenging as I remember it being as a kid, that low barrier to entry is exciting for a new gaming generation.

8.5 / 10.0 - SUPERHOT (VR)
Jul 26, 2017

Superhot VR is a license to perform inside of a bullet ballet without any of the implicit horror of gun violence. Its hook—time only moves when you do—makes room for strategy and action in equal measure, and its stationary operation neatly accommodates and conceals the limitations of virtual reality. All that's left is to imagine is the caliber of Superhot VR's performance outside of Sony's finicky hardware.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition is a shining star in the Street Fighter family. Everything about it feels refined, smooth, and it harkens back to a more concentrated fighting time where the bells and whistles of the fighting experience purely relied on characters and moves. It's good, folks, especially on the PC.

Mind Control Delete reforms Superhot's signature slow motion power fantasy into the shape of a procedurally generated roguelike. It retains the shiny spartan aesthetic, the bellicose narrative, and the most satisfying first-person shooter gimmick of the last decade, but the twists and tweaks behind its operation don't alter its basic complexion. Superhot felt euphoric when it was new. Mind Control Delete can only reheat that sensation of extravagance.

Strobophagia's visuals and decent music help to create an uncomfortable atmosphere. Sadly, that atmosphere is hurt by the simplistic and somewhat stale narrative gameplay that plays against what visual expectations were assumed.

9 / 10.0 - Hades
Jul 24, 2017

An exemplary roguelike incentives and broadens its intrinsic repetition. An ideal narrative adventure paces its characters and their conflicts across a finite timeline. Hades is a vantage point engineered to view a singular setting of both perspectives.  Whichever side you ultimately settle on, Hades is a capable ascent from the dregs of genre stagnation.
