Alana Hagues's Reviews

Born in England, and living near Brighton, Alana has been writing about video games professionally since 2015. Her love of RPGs knows no bounds, she is particularly interested in Japanese RPGs, both old and new, but is always ready to try out the next big thing. A quick way to her heart is to mention Sega's classic Dreamcast RPG, Skies of Arcadia. As well as writing about video games, she runs RPGFan's Reviews and Previews department, and has been in charge there since 2016. You might also recognise her from Random and Retro Encounter - if you hear the British voice, you've found her. Outside of reviews, Alana loves to do nothing more than stay at home with her two dogs, read a book, maybe drink some coffee, and go on long, lonely walks along the beach no matter the weather. She also likes to make a lot of noise on Twitter, usually about her current non-review game.

Capping off the Crossbell and Cold Steel arcs with a nice little bow, The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie hits some high highs – such as with C and the True Reverie Corridor – and when it does, it's an RPG fan's paradise. But as an overall package, it feels like an easy excuse to get a huge number of characters together rather than do something meaningful with them. It's far from the series' best, but fans will find a lot to love here, even if we'd recommend seeking it out on another platform for the best experience, or waiting for a patch.

It's a smaller step than many may have hoped for, especially considering what Pokémon Legends: Arceus did, but it's definitely one in the right direction.

An interesting twist on both rhythm games and RPGs, but it's not always successful.

A strong cast helps Death Come True be an engaging experience, even when the central mechanic isn't used to its best effect.

A solid continuation of the series, but a bit too same-y for some.

A welcome rerelease for this 1993 relic, Romancing SaGa 2 is endearing, interesting and difficult for better or worse.

The Little Acre is all too fleeting an experience, but it's adorable, sweet, and full of potential.

75% - Ara Fell

Ara Fell is a solid example of what RPGMaker games can be, and while it never wows it's certainly a lot of fun.

VA-11 HALL-A is an exciting experiment that I hope can be built upon further with the sequel.

A truly unique adventure, Where the Water Tastes Like Wine is not that far from sweeter waters.

A welcome addition to the fighting game genre that makes the wait for Relink that little bit easier.

The best way to play Final Fantasy VIII, and there's nothing a patch or two can't fix.

Dragon Quest Builders 2 retains the core of the first game and makes many little tweaks that improve things for the best, but it still has the same glaring weakness.

I'll always want the mainline games, and I don't see myself continually coming back to Let's Go like I have done the standard entries, but as a gateway for newer, younger players, I can't think of anything more perfect that Let's Go. I can't wait to see the smiles on kids' faces as they start up their first ever Pokémon adventure.

A beautiful, chaotic adventure, Dragon's Crown Pro is worth a go if you've never played the original.

Ys VIII is nearly perfect when you're simply exploring the island and defeating monsters, but the story sometimes interrupts the action too much.

A quirky and fun adventure that could go far with a few little tweaks.
