Alex Santa Maria's Reviews

Raised on a healthy diet of gaming mags at an Xbox LAN center, Alex is an enthusiast who loves shooters, roguelikes, and arcade-style games. He has an unhealthy obsession with bad movies, a love of the 1980s, and the skills to rack up a high score on your local pinball table. Also, he reviews video games, which might be the reason that he's listed on this website.

While My Time At Portia does stretch a bit too far into the realm of realism, it also offers an accessible entry point into this style of gaming.

Yoshi's Crafted World has a style that erupts off the screen, but it leans too far into simplistic gameplay. That's great for kids, but it's not the all-ages fun that Nintendo is known for.

For anyone who wants an arcade challenge or a hit of Super Meat Boy without the frustration, few games fit that description more than Cuddle Monster Games’ latest hellish creation.

Despite the sparse menus and weird gameplay hiccups, Dangerous Driving is still a hell of a great time.

They Came From Below focuses in on We Happy Few's greatest strengths and really shines because of it. While its short length and weird quirks hold it back from true greatness, this is probably the best thing to come out of Wellington Wells yet.

Despite its flaws, Tropico 6 will definitely cause you to stay up later than you should. If you’re willing to forgive the lack of structure, you can spend hours and hours building on each of the included maps.

Unlike Strafe, Hypnospace Outlaw delivers on exactly what it sets out to do right out of the gate. It’s got some issues but most of them stem from wanting more, which is a good sign.

Unscored - Generation Zero
Mar 26, 2019

No aspect of Generation Zero is remarkable. It feels like a hollow husk of an experience waiting to be filled in by players who will never come.

For those who can’t get enough of weird first-person treats, this will be a smorgasbord. For everyone else, it’s the perfect game to throw on for an evening’s worth of entertainment. Just don’t expect to retain much of it past your brief fling.

6.5 / 10.0 - Far Cry: New Dawn
Mar 5, 2019

Frustratingly, Far Cry New Dawn doesn't deliver in any real way. It doesn't pay off Far Cry 5's ending. It doesn't offer new spins on the Far Cry formula. It doesn't even offer players an escape from money woes. It's just another Far Cry, and that's just not enough anymore.

8 / 10.0 - Dead or Alive 6
Mar 1, 2019

Another solid entry in a stalwart arcade franchise, Dead or Alive 6 doesn't stray too far from what's worked in the past. Whether you're in for fast combos or buxom beauties, Team Ninja have your back.

Despite its flaws, there is some merit to Tech Support: Error Unknown. It does capture the feeling of working in a fast paced support environment.

5.5 / 10.0 - Crackdown 3
Feb 18, 2019

Crackdown 3 is forgettable, broken in places, extremely short and set in its ways. Still, I'd be lying if I told you I didn't have a hell of a lot of fun playing it.

At the end of the day, Achtung! Cthulhu Tactics is perfectly functional. If you’ve got a solid chunk of free time and any interest in the subject matter, this game will fit the bill. However, the little issues stack up so high that it’s hard to really recommend playing this over any other game in the genre.

As a carefree way to fritter away a few hours with friends, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe fits the bill. As an entry in one of the premier franchises in gaming, the adherence to tradition and generic "New" theming leave this one missing the mark.

If you’re looking for an accurate simulation of Supercross, this is going to satisfy. Even though this is a sequel, it feels like a foundation that can be built upon in future games, and I hope that Milestone expands the feature set the next time out

Unlike a lot of indie-level titles, Wargroove is truly fully featured. It's got a solid story mode, but that's just the start. The side modes and especially the map editor give you a lot of bang for your buck.

If your life's work is mastering this specific brand of platforming, then this is an obvious purchase. Most of the rest of us will find more enjoyment in watching the game streamed during an Awesome Games Done Quick event than actually playing it.
