Unscored - Hammerwatch II
Aug 24, 2023

Hammerwatch 2 retains the same Dungeons and Dragons feel as the original game, but this time is less friendly for those looking to play the game by themselves. There's plenty to do, but sometimes it just feels like it was tacked on. Regardless, if you have some friends or randoms to play Hammerwatch II with you, it becomes a better experience.

Returnal was great on the PlayStation 5, and it's equally as good on the PC, with its punishing but enjoyable gameplay. There's also something to say about being able to play this on an ultrawide monitor. I just wish the game didn't stutter as much.

All in all, it’s not a bad port. It’s definitely not as rough as Nioh 1 was, but it does need another round or two in the optimization department. There’s no reason why one of the best GPUs on the market, combined with still equally decent CPU, should be seeing the performance I observed. I could see if this was confined to just playing at 4K, but even 1440p was a chore. Once KT addresses this, the game will be in a better position.

Unscored - Dark Devotion

Dark Devotion has a lot going for it. Sadly, the cons outweigh the pros and drop in several systems that really need to be fleshed out before the game can shine. Until that happens, this game will leave you frustrated and lost, which isn't a good feeling.

With the right setup and using a gamepad, Nioh is an enjoyable and passable experience on the PC. There's lots of content, the gameplay is fun (if you like this style of gameplay).

When I get a WayForward Technologies game in my hands, I usually know I'm in for a treat. Except this time around I was really disappointed with what they had to offer. A generic Metroidvania-styled game, based on the failed Mummy reboot and completely devoid of any enjoyment. The gameplay is boring, the story is uninspiring and for the first time ever, I had to force myself to complete a WayForward title.

That said, for nostalgia fans, you're right at home. Sadly, this game doesn't even match up to Double Dragon II, which is 28 years older and still holds up. Still, nostalgia will only get you so far. Double Dragon IV definitely had some potential as a throwback to the late 1980's of gaming. Sadly, there's no enough substance to give Jimmy and Billy the return they deserved. I wanted greatness, I got mildly ok. Stick with Double Dragon II, III or even Double Dragon Neon.

As someone who used to enjoy the Riptide games on the Android and iOS platforms, I really can't recommend Riptide GP: Renegade to anyone. The difficulty is ramped up too high to start off which, the story isn't enjoyable and the overall presentation of the game is poor. I wanted to like this game, but it just seems like a half-hearted attempt, which is disappointing. I was excepting perhaps a game similar to the one great Jet Moto, but that didn't happen. It just feels half baked.

I can only recommend this for only the hardcore of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans. For everyone else, you may want to think about putting down $40 dollars (PC) or $50 for consoles and instead try to rent or wait until the price drops. Sadly it seems that Platinum Games either doesn't excel when it comes to licensed games and should focus more on their own IPs, or at the very least take a pass when it comes to doing video game adaptions of tv shows.

Though shallow in its execution, the plane-switching mechanics of Poncho contain enough cleverness to prove intriguing. With a pleasingly melancholy atmosphere and beautiful pixellated visuals, the titular robot seems destined for a truly memorable side-scrolling puzzle platformer. Unfortunately, this is not it.

Sadly, despite Spacehulk: Deathwing possessing a great atmosphere, I can't recommend the title. At least not in the current state of the game. The single player portion is standard flair that will only appeal to those who are fans of the Warhammer 40K universe. This goes double for the co-op. It's a nice experience but it really doesn't match up to what you find with single player campaign. The technical issues, which is my main concern with this title, simply robs you of any fun. With massive frame rate drops which can plummet on even the most powerful PCs, show the telltale sign of poor optimization. Bugs that can cause all sorts of odd things, including crashing your game also are rampant.

For all its shortcomings, Redfall isn’t a bad game, a bit dated but not bad.

The Outbound Ghost feels like a mixed bag; it doesn't know whether or not it wants to be charming or have a darker storyline. It fails at both.

Dolmen is an interesting Soulslike experience that is troubled by clunky combat, and an outdated UI, which hurts the game's chances of standing out in a crowded market with games that does what it does, but better.

At the end of the day, Outriders has a lot going for it. The gameplay is fun, I love the fact that there is more than enough loot to collect and spec out my characters. However, once you hit the end game, the game is essentially dead and that's troublesome. Adding to that, the game still suffers from a number of issues including terrible online, random crashes, abilities either not working or working correctly and random crashing – Despite People Can Fly putting in overtime to get the game to a better place. For now, I'd wait for the game to mature, unless the lure of some fantastic running and gunning is the only thing that matters to you.

I enjoyed the combat and thought the concept of Extinction was really decent, it just wasn't implemented correctly. Worth a play, but only if the price was a bit lower. If you're looking for a game that lets you take down massive enemy creatures, stick with the original. Or pick this up for a fun rental night or wait for a price drop.

All in all, Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers is an impressive title for the Nintendo Switch. Sadly, the fact that we've seen this game several times before heavily negates its appeal. Short of adding two new characters, and the disappointing Way of the Hado mode, this is still Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix. The title is worth picking up if you enjoy fighting games, but not its current price. Definitely, wait for a sale.

Wild Guns Reloaded is a nice blast from the past and one that definitely desires a playthrough. The main issue here is the fact that the game was a simple port with nothing really added with the exception of the 4-player co-op (local) and graphical polish. The lack of any online capacity will likely make many gamers ignore the title. The trophy omissions are also puzzling since Natsume took the time to upscale the graphical side of things but nothing else. The asking price is simply too high for less than an hour of gameplay with no online leaderboards, no online co-op, all of which simply kill any changes this title may have had.

If you’re a fan of other action RPG’s such as The Witcher or even Dark Souls, then Techomancer may be just the game for you. Despite some rough edges, Technomancer does more good than harm, it just suffers from doing too much during certain elements and not enough with others. Despite that, the journey is very enjoyable and that’s all that matters in the end. Read more at The Outerhaven: The Technomancer Review (PC) http://www.theouterhaven.net/LHv94
