Dangerous Driving is undeniably fun. Taking out other racers at 200mph always will be insanely enjoyable and Three Fields has taken full advantage of Burnout nostalgia. However, underwhelming crash physics, poorly balanced AI racers, and some technical problems keep their game from being the modernization of Criterion's classic that fans hoped it would be.

3 / 5.0 - Déraciné
Nov 5, 2018

There are plenty of possibilities for interpretation, and being so close to the story may see you connect to it, but I never felt like the students' protector. As a character with the power to alter their path, it's disappointing that I rarely felt like more than an observer.

When Assassin's Creed Rogue originally released, there was a feeling among fans that the series was in need of reinvention. The gameplay frustrations had been present long enough and it was time for something new.

3 / 5.0 - NBA Playgrounds
May 15, 2017

NBA Playgrounds scratches that arcade basketball itch we've had since NBA Jam. The gameplay and progression are simple and fun to mess around with but unbalanced power-ups and a shallow online multiplayer offering keep it from being as consistently fun as the classics.

3 / 5.0 - Portal Knights
May 31, 2017

There is a lot for you to do in Portal Knights. Exploring the well-designed and colorful worlds while taking on groups of challenging and unique enemies is consistently fun but the shallow and repetitive quests and almost unnecessary crafting system make the game frequently tedious to play.

3 / 5.0 - Rive
Sep 19, 2016

Difficulty is a good thing when managed correctly. Most players want to beat an area and be overcome by a feeling of pride and accomplishment, not be glad it is over. RIVE often prompts the latter emotion and while the levels, art, and hacking are fun and well-designed, the main take away from Two Tribes’ game is a feeling of frustration.

7 / 10.0 - FIFA 23
Sep 27, 2022

More reliable passing, improved defending, and balanced attacking options mean FIFA 23 is a lot of fun to play. It’s an improved overall package, even if FUT’s main additions are underwhelming and the other modes have been given little love once again.

7 / 10.0 - As Dusk Falls
Jul 18, 2022

While As Dusk Falls’ story is full of thriller cliches and tropes, if you can look past the unique animation style, playing around with the well-written characters’ lives can be a lot of fun.

3.5 / 5.0 - Top Spin 2K25
Apr 23, 2024

On the court, TopSpin 2K25 is brilliant. It's realistic, satisfying, and feels great to play, especially as you get to grips with the timing needed for every shot type. It's just a shame that such good tennis gameplay is housed in such bland modes that have you grind for very little sense of progression.

While it’s got a long way to go to hit the heights of the Forza Horizon competition, the improved story telling, inventive Night vs. Day structure, and fun driving make Heat worth picking up even if Payback and 2015’s reboot put you off the series.

3.5 / 5.0 - FIFA 20
Sep 27, 2019

It’s not perfect, but it’s the biggest step forward for the series for a few years. It might be the best one to pick up if you haven’t played FIFA in a while.

3.5 / 5.0 - GreedFall

It’ll no doubt be right up the street of Bioware fans and De Sardet’s journey is certainly a fun one, but Greedfall is unremarkable in a few key ways.

For the most part, NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is an improvement on the original. The fun, over-the-top, and easy to understand gameplay returns and the online options make it a more complete package.

3.5 / 5.0 - Transference
Sep 21, 2018

Transference certainly showcases the potential of VR storytelling in the style Spectrevision are attempting. Even if its short story isn't always effectively told, and some of the puzzles distract, the atmosphere that's been created through detailed world design, incredible lighting effects, and intense sound design makes for a terrifying experience.

Firewall Zero Hour is a masterclass in accessible, immersive VR first-person shooting. Its sharp, intuitive tactical gameplay and well-designed maps make for intense 4v4 action that's a level above anything else available on PlayStation VR. However, it cannot be ignored that the progression slog and rapidly emptying lobbies make Firewall a difficult game to commit to.

3.5 / 5.0 - Strange Brigade
Sep 4, 2018

Strange Brigade's serviceable but flawed gameplay and forgettable story make for an incredibly generic third-person shooter, but its charming personality, great level design, and well integrated puzzles make for a B-movie romp that's a lot more fun than you might initially expect, even if you plan to play alone.

3.5 / 5.0 - Island Time VR
Apr 3, 2018

Much like Job Simulator, Island Time balances the ridiculous with a challenging task perfectly. Although it may get repetitive once you learn the ropes, the loop of discovering new ways to survive while dealing with whatever mishaps may occur is engaging and enjoyable. Spending time on the island with your mate Carl the Crab can be great fun in VR, just don't expect to spend a lifetime doing it.

3.5 / 5.0 - NHL 18
Sep 15, 2017

I have a feeling that NHL 18 suffers from its lack of competition. While, as always, its gameplay is strong, its presentation is pretty much perfect from in-game to the menus, and there is plenty of enjoyable modes for all standards of players to sink their teeth into, the lack of substantial new features and innovation mean that it is a step behind even some of EA's other marquee sports titles.

3.5 / 5.0 - Snake Pass
Apr 5, 2017

While Snake Pass looks and sounds like a 3D platformer of old, the 'think like a snake' idea that the gameplay is built around makes it a game that will influence platformers of the future. The puzzle is the movement, and since that movement is so fun and engaging, it makes for enjoyable experience, even if the unreliable camera makes it more frustrating than it should be.
