4.9 / 10.0 - Suicide Guy
Feb 28, 2018

Suicide Guy is not about suicide or depression. It's a lighthearted game about a guy who has to wake up from a dream to keep his beer from spilling on his floor. Although the levels are varied, the unreliable physics and frustrating platforming kept me from enjoying this game more. If you like the so bad it's good genre, this may give you some enjoyment. Otherwise, it is not the worst game that will be released this year, but it has too many negatives to overcome for me to recommend it.

Episode 5 is an overall disappointment for the end of the season. Batman is victorious, but the villain’s motivations are tired. The detective and fight choreography scenes only ask the player to draw lines, and the entire season feels like a setup for later seasons, sacrificing a more focused story with deeper character interaction. I can only hope the next season will avoid some of the problems in season one.

5 / 10.0 - Rad Rodgers
Feb 19, 2018

Rad Rodgers is a retro platformer inspired by Jazz Jackrabbit, Commander Keen, and Conker. With his potty mouth console, Dusty, Rad must save First World and restore the Elder Tree. The levels are filled with collectibles and hidden areas, and the visuals and music combine into a game that was created with a lot of love for its inspiration. Unfortunately, this is completely undone by a game-stopping bug in level seven, which I hope will be patched quickly. If it is, the game is good, but for now, I cannot recommend a game that cannot be finished.

5 / 10.0 - Seraph
Nov 19, 2016

I think Seraph is a good game burdened with some crippling technical problems. They are not insurmountable, and there is fun to be had here. With a patch or two, it could be a great game for a fan of Spelunky or roguelikes. It looks incredible in motion and the auto-aim feature works better than you would expect. When it is running as it should, it is easy to recommend for fans of the genre. Unfortunately, the load times and occasional bugs ruin an otherwise great experience.

5.5 / 10.0 - Gleamlight
Aug 30, 2020

Gleamlight’s stained-glass art style and generally good music are it’s best qualities. The platforming and combat are fine, but a couple of the boss fights are more disappointing than frustrating. The game is also very short, and replaying it backward only highlights some of the flaws you encountered originally, even though there are a few new bosses to encounter. It’s not a bad game. It’s just not very good either.

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows is a game with an interesting world and plenty of different viewpoints to consider. The game’s narrative and dialogue are strengths and weaknesses, and it has a codex for the player to keep it all straight. Not everyone will enjoy having to invest the time to get there, but, if you can move beyond that and the frequent loading screens, the game will deliver a story with plenty of twists and turns to keep you engaged.

Overall, Planet of the Eyes is a decent platformer with a surprisingly enjoyable story. The world is sometimes too sparse, and the lack of challenge and short length will not satisfy hardcore platformer fans. However, if you are looking for a good sci-fi atmosphere and love some physics-based puzzles, you may want to give Planet of the Eyes a try.

Claire: Extended Cut is a good addition to a survival horror fan’s personal library, especially if you like the psychological aspect of games like Silent Hill. The 2.5D graphics do a great job of presenting the story and the sound kept the game tense. I did find the bugs, the occasional aimless wandering, and somewhat obscure puzzles to be a problem in some parts of the game. If you can overlook these issues, Claire: Extended Cut is a scary and fun experience that becomes better and more sinister as you continue to play.

Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash takes the Senran Kagura characters and puts them in skimpy bikinis for a water fight tournament. Despite the jokes and enough Jello boob jiggle to make you question the laws of gravity, the game offers plenty of depth with a huge roster of characters, strategic choices in weapons, and plenty of upgradable options to keep you playing. If you like anime or Senran Kagura and do not take the game too seriously, Senran Kagura Peach Beach Splash may be the perfect thing to heat up your summer gaming.

PSYCHO-PASS: Mandatory Happiness is a visual novel based on the anime series. I liked seeing the characters, learning more about the world, and I liked the ability to make choices that impact the story to fit how I thought the character might respond - even if it resulted in death and the end of the game. The few times the game let you see the stitching on the story was a little annoying, but it never dampened the entire experience. If you hate anime or visual novels, this game will not change your mind, but it is a well-crafted one. Fans of the show or genre should not miss it.

6.9 / 10.0 - The Town of Light
Jun 6, 2017

Although it is not for everyone, The Town of Light is unique. It is a serious game that is deliberate in its storytelling and design choices, and it is purposely looking to provoke an emotional response in the player, as it tells Renée’s story of being confined to an asylum. It has some technical issues and text size issues that can pull you out of the story, but the ending will leave a strong impression on anyone with an ounce of empathy.

7 / 10.0 - Control: AWE
Aug 30, 2020

Control’s AWE DLC reintroduces the world of Alan Wake, but he is only a very small part of the overall experience. It also adds a new ability, a new service weapon, a new enemy, and it’s more of the same Control that you already enjoy. Gamers buying AWE only for Alan Wake may be a little letdown, but it’s a good addition to the overall universe and mystery of the Oldest House with the wonderful promise of a very interesting future from Remedy Games.

Including all the extra DLC, Pathfinder: Kingmaker – Definitive Edition has plenty of D&D-style content for you to enjoy. That enjoyment is lessened by technical issues and some clunky UI, but the freedom to choose your own adventure, rule and expand a kingdom, and journey through the world with a party of unique companions can help you overlook these problems.

7 / 10.0 - Chaos;Child
Oct 24, 2017

CHAOS;CHILD is an exciting visual novel about a group of high school kids who are investigating a series of murders. Although the beginning is a little slow and the translation could use a little polishing, it delivers on a great story with many twists that fans of the genre will really enjoy

7 / 10.0 - Light Tracer
Oct 8, 2017

Light Tracer is a puzzle platformer for the PSVR that lets you guide a princess up a tower and change the view at will. The levels are mostly well-designed and creative, but technical and mechanical issues will cause you some trouble while you play. There is still plenty to enjoy here for a PSVR game, and it can be played without worrying about nausea. If puzzle platforming is your jam, and you own a PSVR, you should give Light Tracer a try.

Touhou: Scarlet Curiosity mixes up different styles into a delicious pie. You can still see the different elements, but they complement each other in the overall game. It is fun and addictive with a clean and cute, modern retro style. Although there are some annoyances such as the camera, it was never enough to make me want to stop playing. The individual game elements are never as deep as they would be on their own, but the game has a great rhythm and feel. It was a very pleasant surprise for me, and I now look forward to future Touhou games.

I really enjoyed my time with Fate/EXTELLA: The Umbral Star, but it is a game for fans of the Warriors franchise style of combat and fans of the show. The combat can become repetitive, and the story can be a little tough to understand at times. However, it knows its audience, and it provides a wonderful experience for anyone looking to have more fun in the Fate universe. If that is you, I recommend you give it a try. You will not be disappointed.

Batman: The Enemy Within Episode 4 tells a good story, but it is the interactions with John Doe that make this episode worth playing. If you have been waiting to see him take his next steps to becoming a legend, episode 4 has plenty to offer.

Batman: The Enemy Within, Episode 2: The Pact, continues to build a new season with a handful of competing villains, inner conflicts, and fallout from the first season. Although it never hit the heights of episode 1 and lessened the impact of your only real decision, it is still an easy recommendation for fans of the series.

The Flame in the Flood is a survival game for people who may not like survival games. There is enough information to keep you from being continuously frustrated, but it does not completely hold your hand. The world and music add to its unique character, and the different modes will allow you to play at the difficulty you want. If you like survival games, I recommend you give it a try.
