5 / 10 - Putty Squad
Jun 1, 2014

As a remake of a game that did not leave its mark, Putty Squad does not stand out. Its glitches and flaws, which include a serious lack of fluidity in some areas, make it a less-than-enjoyable platformer, which should only be considered by those who truly wish to try every title in the genre.

The JRPG style is not going through its finest hour and it’s not Conception II: Children of the Seven Stars that will lift it upwards. While the battle system is very well implemented and the breeding function is a welcome detail, nearly everything else is missing: an involving narrative, a captivating exploration, charismatic characters and appealing graphics are all absent from this lacklustre and overall tedious production.

6 / 10 - Armillo
Aug 12, 2014

It's well presented, the control system is properly tuned and its difficulty level is balanced, qualities which amount to an entertaining work. Nevertheless, there are several flaws which should not be overlooked in a final game and which require a thorough revision, such as an irregular frame rate.

Art of Balance’s Wii U premiere is a fine candidate for a fun, compelling and absorbing puzzle game. Its levels are wide and varied and its multiplayer modes will gather friends for long hours. A very welcome entry into the puzzle sector of the Wii U catalogue.

Paper Monsters Recut is one such example of a graphically charming and long-lasting 2D platformer with 3D backgrounds and with simple and intuitive gameplay mechanics. Its difficulty level and soundtrack could use some improvements, which does not take any appeal away from this piece of gaming.

Its blend of platforms and puzzles and the way the game was spawned from Super Mario 3D World are very well executed and the overall atmosphere of the title is extremely creative and likely to keep players around it for a long time.

The new Just Dance 2015 brings what the audience expects: a large musical assortment, along with fun and creative choreographies. Where this game does not stand out is on its variety, as it lacks significant improvements and additions to its experience, possibly as a consequence of a release policy that produces one Just Dance title per year.

Pier Solar and the Great Architects is a welcome effort of creating a piece of work in the contemporary age that follows a format of the mid-1990s. Its narrative is well structured and the visual interface is very appealing, but the game also suffers from several technical flaws and its combat system quickly becomes repetitive and tedious.

Majora's Mask 3D is all that a remake of the original could ask for. Not only does Nintendo deliver the original's immersive plot, extremely challenging temples, multiple side-quests and the overall gloom and sorrow that surrounds the adventure, it still finds space for improvements, even at a handheld level. Let the inexperienced be warned, though: this will not go easy on the newly-arrived.

7 / 10 - Spy Chameleon
Feb 9, 2015

Spy Chameleon is an accessible puzzle game that departs from an attractive premise. While it does not stand out clearly above everything else on the market, it does have a wide array of levels and welcomes players of any level of experience.

Yoshi's Woolly world features a beautifully-crafted world where colourful settings, a superb level of interactivity and a delightful soundtrack are topped by an involving and compelling gameplay experience. A magnificent title from any point of view.

The main mechanics are all there, this time with the additional factor of online multiplayer, which can lead to intense moments of bedlam across territories. What it offers in ambition, though, it lacks in innovation and graphical quality, with very modest visual and sound environments and a resolution that can be problematic in the first model of the Nintendo 3DS.

Funk of Titans brings forth a very simple control system and some elements which if explored better, could make a more interesting experience. Unfortunately, the overall impression is that its mechanics are far too repetitive and its level design is flawed, which alongside an irregular frame rate contribute to make this a frustrating and unappealing work.

The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes follows the footsteps of Four Swords Adventures and brings forth a very well designed multiplayer experience, whether local or online, and a significant degree of challenge, even for experienced players. While it seems odd that a Zelda title dispenses with the eponymous princess and with Link, Tri Force Heroes does its job in an irrepressible manner.

6 / 10 - The Swindle

While the game is indeed varied and its visual environment is very well designed, it can often become very repetitive as it compels the player to repeat missions again and again.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is a worthy successor to the previous title in the series and one of the most ambitious games to be released in the Wii U so far. A monument of content, exploration and complexity, this is a technically staggering work with visually breathtaking landscapes and the potential to spend literally hundreds of hours in its main and secondary missions. A masterpiece of the JRPG genre which is more than certain to gain a place close to the hearts of many who will dedicate themselves to explore this world.

While its online component has lost some appeal and it does not offer significantly more content than its predecessor, the offline challenges and the musical catalogue have improved and in the end, it's a very entertaining and fun piece of gaming for groups.

Bravely Second: End Layer does not live up to its predecessor's standards but this does not make it any less of a good RPG. Its visual environment is superb, it's loaded with content and its lifespan will keep everyone around it for a long time. It also improves on its predecessor's class system, while it falls out with the soundtrack and narrative.

The HD release of Twilight Princess brings all the splendour of the original game to the contemporary age, with a much deserved high definition refurbishing and very welcome mechanics unique to the Wii U. Its structure and fundamentals remain untouched and Twilight Princess HD is as much of a monumental game today as it was upon its original release.

Mega Man Legacy Collection is an invitation to explore the first six Mega Man games and it succeeds at striking a chord both with longtime Mega Man fans and with those less familiar with the series. As good as this compilation is, it could only be improved by fixing frame rate drops in certain busy areas and with more content, especially more games of the Mega Man series which could have easily been included in this title.
