For new players, Mercenary Kings Reloaded has its share of enjoyable moments but there are a metric ton of indies on Switch in the same price range that offer a more rewarding and ultimately better experience.
I don't think it's worth picking up yet. If you're the kind of person who isn't all that bothered about tech issues and will happily watch the game you paid £50 for get patched to high heaven than jump in. You'll find a multi-layered story with characters that are engaging and a world that's ripe for exploration where you get to make your own save points out of alcohol.
I don't think you even have to be a fan of the genre to really get to grips with The Darkside Detective. It does more or less everything very well, but it's definitely aimed at a niche audiences in terms of references and in-jokes. There could be an argument too that it doesn't quite hit the dizzy heights of Thimbleweed Park, but there's certainly nothing else on the system currently that is any closer to reaching that goal.
Night in the Woods and it's one of the most important experiences I've had as an enthusiast of this industry for over 30 years.
I do hope Epiphany Games work on making this version a little more polished or build a whole new Tiny Troopers experience for Switch because as I said at the top, there's a game and a half here waiting to be played on a platform that can lend itself well to this kind of game. Joint Ops XL isn't it, though. Not one bit.
Brawlout is a close but no cigar attempt to reinvigorate the Smash fighter. The FingerGuns Review;
Human: Fall Flat is not going to change the world, but it's certainly a welcome distraction from it. Just make sure you have a second full controller set-up or it becomes a very lonesome experience.
I'm delighted that Beyond the Bedrock brought back that emotional arc the previous three episodes were missing. It seemed to fly by and that's the first time I've said that about an episode this season. Whilst there weren't a huge amount of big choices to be made – though one near the end was rather harrowing – and the story hasn't moved on significantly, the episode sets up the finale strongly with a neat post-credits scene. I hope that the final episode lives up to this standard, because this has been far and away the best of the season so far.
Big Ant come out swinging with the best cricket game in years.
There's little else on the Switch that can match the chaos that Worms W.M.D. creates, making this new edition a game worth picking up as soon as possible.
The ultimate top down racer hits the Switch. Mantis Burn Racing – The FingerGuns Review;
L.A. Noire remains a fully unique experience, and a game that deserves its second round.
Still, if you're looking for a karaoke game to get stuck into this holiday, you can't much go wrong with We Sing Pop!. It doesn't look like there's DLC coming anytime soon so what you buy is what you're stuck with, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The song list is varied and full of fun songs to get stuck into.
Sonic Team promised us. They promised us they would deliver with Forces, they said they're taking Sonic back and will remind us of what makes him so great. I was so ready to get on board. Ugh, I was so ready. Damn you, Sonic Team.
Farming Simulator on the Switch is exactly what it says on the tin. Nothing more, nothing less.
Wheels of Auerlia has potential but squanders its opportunities to say something.
Don't be swayed by its colourful appearance, Putty Pals has been put on this earth to hurt you. The FingerGuns Review;
Pankapu can sit proudly among the greats of the Switch line-up. The FingerGuns review;
I'm struggling to find something I really didn't enjoy about Golf Story. It feels fantastic on my Switch and is the kind of game I could play for hours on a train journey (battery withstanding). I'm delighted it's as good as I was hoping it would be, it's probably exceeded my expectations.
Ruiner is terrific. The story is a bit of a misfire and the characters are difficult to engage with, but the solid gameplay, the terrific visuals and the cracking soundtrack should get you through. The difficulty levels are overwhelming – at least for me – but it doesn't take away from the fact Ruiner is just a great game.
