Groove Coaster's stylish look can be frustrating and intrusive, but the underlying mechanics still make for one of the best rhythm games I've ever played. The excellent track list was already impressive, but the fine-tuned gameplay, inventive mechanics like ad-libs, and a mission-based structure of unlocks that keep you focused and coming back for more content make the game addicting and rewarding. I wish I could turn off the flashy backgrounds and weird camera angles, but even with that blemish this is still an easy choice for anyone who wants to get into a good groove.

8 / 10.0 - La-Mulana 2
Mar 21, 2020

But let me serve as a cautionary tale for those who want other things out of video games. If this game is for you, then it is absolutely incredible. Sadly, with its high difficulty and demandingly complex puzzles, it is most certainly not for me.

The wildly popular Persona franchise likely wouldn't be what it is today without Nocturne's influence, and as a fan of both series I'm incredibly excited to see this classic title be rediscovered by a new generation. I can't help but feel let down by the poor audio compression for the soundtrack, but ultimately that was just as much of a problem in 2003 as it is now. This is the best way to play Nocturne, and I think any fan of classic JRPGs owes it to themself to do exactly that.

8 / 10.0 - Splatoon 3
Sep 13, 2022

It's even tougher to accept alongside an even older game like Mario Kart 8 doubling its content in DLC for half the price. If you're looking for reasons to upgrade from Splatoon 2, the differences are so small that I can't say there's anything that would convince you. On the bright side, if the words "Splatoon 3" were all you needed to get excited, then make no mistake: this is-by a small margin-the best Splatoon has ever been.

A podcast that I listen to once described the game as "my favorite slot machine", and it's a moniker I think is very apt for how good Vampire Survivors is at giving a satisfying rush of dopamine with its overwhelmingly flashy effects, absurd power curve, and snappy pace of upgrading. There are no hidden depths lurking under the surface and I truly don't know what more I could say about the game than I already have, but it doesn't need to be anything more than it is. Sometimes I just want to see big explosions, flashing colors, and numbers going up, and Vampire Survivors gives me all of that in great quantities with pretty much no friction along the way.

7.5 / 10.0 - Risk of Rain
Oct 9, 2018

A lack of clarity plagues both the aesthetics and gameplay. Reaching a place where you know what you're doing isn't an easy task, but getting over the learning curve is worth it. A single run in Risk of Rain is quick, but it's also so addicting that you'll rarely ever play just one run.

I can't recommend it as a solo experience, meaning its appeal on a hybrid console like the Switch may be a little limited. I can however highly recommend it for sitting down and having a good time with a group of friends. If you've got other game consoles then you can probably already play this game at its best, but it's always a good time to jump in and have fun crashing through some castles.

Hellblade is just as good on Switch as it was on other platforms, so now’s the perfect time to pick it up if you haven’t already had the chance to experience the journey of Senua’s Sacrifice.

With the exception of the missing online play, Civ VI is - for better or worse - a faithful and complete port of the PC experience. It's disappointing to be stuck primarily playing with AI but there's a lot to love about Civ VI's single player experience, and playing on Switch turns out to be a solid way to experience the rise and fall of entire civilizations.

7.5 / 10.0 - Persona 5 Strikers
Feb 9, 2021

Despite that I can't deny how much fun I had with the gameplay, and I'm probably going to end up replaying it on PC for the chance to enjoy it in surround sound (another feature the Switch version weirdly lacks). For as much as the story disappointed me it just wouldn't be true to say I don't like Persona 5 Strikers. I like it a lot, and I felt really happy with it when I finally finished it. It's a game that I want to recommend, but that recommendation has to come with a big caveat: if you're a Persona fan that loves the Phantom Thieves but you're just not interested in the gameplay, it may be more worth your time to just play Persona 5 again.

The sheer scale and depth of this game's commitment to matching Three Houses' style and structure made for a very pleasant surprise that sadly made it even more disappointing when the ending fell as flat as it did. Almost overnight I went from not being able to get enough of the game to wondering if I had it in me to play even one more of the game's three story routes. Three Hopes is a must play for diehard fans of both Fire Emblem and Dynasty Warriors alike, but I almost wish that it had committed less to the scale of its story so that its poor final hours weren't so much of a bitter pill to swallow.

undefined. If you've ever played We Love Katamari or any version of the original Katamari Damacy, then you already know what you'll be getting into with We Love Katamari Reroll. It's an incremental improvement at best-both as a sequel to Katamari Damacy and as a port of We Love Katamari-but if that's all you're looking for then the end result will certainly be satisfying. Katamari is already such an unusual game that maybe its sequel doesn't need to be particularly groundbreaking, and since it's so rare for any Katamari game to be released at all it's absolutely a good place to start for anyone that hasn't gotten to experience the series' weird and wonderful vibes.

7 / 10.0 - Double Cross
Jan 10, 2019

Double Cross is almost great. With all the different ways to use the proton slinger in this game, I definitely had a blast progressing through the levels. Unfortunately, the investigation and combat sections make for such dull interruptions that at least a third of your time spent as an agent of R.I.F.T. will be a forgettable slog.

7 / 10.0 - Northgard
Sep 25, 2019

Overall, Northgard is a wonderful strategy game despite its shortcomings. The rough edges can make it tough for newcomers to the genre to get invested, but if you're a fan of strategy games or able to tough it out through the warts until everything clicks, then you're in for a treat. The Switch is a natural fit for the 4X genre, and Northgard is a prime example of the potential that this style of strategy game can have outside the PC ecosystem.

7 / 10.0 - Mistover

7 / 10.0 - Levelhead
Apr 30, 2020

On the bright side, the game does have full cross-compatibility with the PC version. With a pre-existing collection of thousands of levels with more coming in every day, anyone interested in simply playing levels will have a fully-featured experience. Sadly, creators will have to put up with some frustrating issues to get as much out of this game as they could've on another platform.

7 / 10.0 - Cruis'n Blast
Sep 14, 2021

There's no doubt that Cruis'n Blast is going to serve a relatively niche audience, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. The sheer spectacle on display combined with vast opportunity for technical skill makes for an incredibly engaging arcade racing game that focuses on letting the player have pure, unfiltered fun. It's a shame that there isn't any form of online functionality to provide a little extra meaning to the experience, since that little extra motivation could've elevated Cruis'n Blast from a good game to a great game.

6.5 / 10.0 - Hue
Aug 14, 2019

Even though Hue struggles to hold up as a puzzle game due to its simple but tedious tasks, I can't bring myself to say I really hated the experience. The game commits so fully to its art style with strong, screen-filling colors that pop against each other that I wanted to keep playing to see more of it. I do wish that this art style had been applied to a game that's less frustrating overall, but despite the disappointing puzzles I'm still pretty happy with the time I spent in Hue's bright, bold environment.

The act of moving around through the Kingdom of Karst is so well-tuned that I had a lot of fun running through hallways smacking monsters with a leaf. Unfortunately, at the end of the day Karst just wasn't a very interesting place in which to spend time, and I felt myself wishing for a bit more substance. There is undoubtedly something special going on in Momodora, but sadly I never felt like I was playing anything more than an introduction to a larger game that doesn't actually exist.

6.5 / 10.0 - Mortal Kombat 11
May 2, 2019

I wish that I could've enjoyed playing it so much more, but the arduous grind for cosmetics permeates so strongly through the backbone of this game that picking it up to play at all can be frustrating. NetherRealm has promised a patch to make the grind easier, but all it seems to do is increase the rate you gain currency without removing the always-online restrictions. I hope that someday they relax a bit more and make Towers of Time more playable on the go, because right now I can't recommend Mortal Kombat on Switch nearly as much as I want to.
