undefined. While I'm here, let me give a quick note on Pikmin 2: It's been a long time since I played Pikmin 2 so I didn't want to write a hasty review of it without really putting time into it, but as far as I can tell it also appears to be a straight port of the New Play Control version with the same control scheme on Switch as Pikmin 1. The single immediate change I could see was that the Duracell battery in the game's opening stage has been replaced with a fake generic brand, which probably applies to the other licensed real-world products throughout the game.

The journey has just begun, and we've got a lot of Dokapon Kingdom ahead of us, but I'm incredibly excited to continue this adventure. Check back with us as Dokapon Kingdom (Kind Of) Monthly progresses to see more of our impressions on this legendary party board game.

It's difficult to justify calling this new version a remaster at all since it includes all of the problems with the previous version while introducing entirely new problems on top of that. The bare minimum for a port of a retro game should be that you won't notice any technical problems if you haven't played the original, and Tales of Symphonia Remastered does not even clear that bar. It is playable; it's still Tales of Symphonia, but that is the absolute least we can ask of it, and that is the absolute most we've gotten from it.

As much as I loved the chance to play an additional chapter, Tiki's paralogue doesn't live up to the standard set by base game maps, and the Emblem Bracelets themselves don't add much to a completed save file-though it was nice to see Tiki and the house leaders get a chance to talk to Marth and Byleth since the Emblem characters never actually talk to each other in the base game. The expansion pass is a better value if you purchase it early in your playthrough, but you'll likely be stuck in the same position I am now for the remaining five Emblem characters to be added throughout 2023. Ironically the DLC is likely to be more enticing for players who pick up Engage late after all of the additional content has been added, since it's tough to say you'll get your money's worth now unless you're confident you'll still be playing Fire Emblem Engage at the end of this year.

I want to say that Ruined King is great, because on a design level it is. It shows off the appeal of Runeterra while crafting a unique RPG battle system that is deep, engaging, and rewarding. But the presence of such an obvious and debilitating bug makes it difficult for me to recommend. Some may say that I’m making a mountain out of a molehill over having to take five minutes out of my time every couple of hours, and I have no doubt that many people will probably push past the bug and still love the game regardless.

The content that’s in the game right now shows a lot of promise, but it is unquestionably missing some content that will make it feel fleshed out.

Between Joker, Mementos, Stage Builder, and Shared Content, the 3.0.0 update is the most excited I’ve been about Super Smash Bros. Ultimate since launch.

Unscored - Tetris 99
Feb 23, 2019

The feature set is sadly lacking, but data miners that dug deep into the game's code found evidence of new modes - team play and a traditional marathon mode - waiting to be added in the future. We'll likely revisit Tetris 99 sometime later when these features get added, but for now I'd still recommend downloading it and giving it a try. “Free” is a pretty tough price to beat, and given how many hours I've already sunk into the world's weirdest battle royale, I can still say there's a lot of fun to be had in what little Tetris 99 has to offer.

Champions of Vestroia is a total failure. If you're not already a Bakugan fan, there is absolutely nothing for you here. If you are a Bakugan fan, then you deserve a game that respects your time and passion more than this.

2 / 10.0 - PixARK
Jun 2, 2019

The Switch doesn't have an Early Access program like Steam does, but make no mistake: this is an early access game through and through. What little merit PixARK has is thoroughly overshadowed by how blatantly unfinished it is. It's astonishing that a Minecraft knock-off would be listed on the eShop at a higher price than Minecraft, but it's truly mind-boggling that the actual game is in such a sorry state. Do not play PixARK.

3 / 10.0 - Xenon Racer
Apr 8, 2019

Xenon Racer doesn't have anything that makes it particularly unique, so even the best port would still be mediocre. The one way it truly manages to go above and beyond is by doing its best to hide its shoddy port right up to its pre-rendered gameplay footage in the intro that was clearly recorded on a different system. If you're in a desperate fix for a new racing game there are worse options than Xenon Racer, but make sure you pick it up on another system, because even the added portability on Switch can't make this version worth the cost of admission.

Thief of Thieves would be a boring game in the best of conditions, but the Switch version only serves to make a bad game worse. It's incredibly short, clocking in at less than five hours, but I still found myself struggling to care to keep going long before I reached the end. From the bland, underdeveloped gameplay to the buggy port, Thief of Thieves spent so much time focusing on the comic book's style that it didn't bother including any actual substance.

3.5 / 10.0 - Desert Child
Dec 11, 2018

From the gorgeous pixel art to the incredible soundtrack, Desert Child looks outstanding. Looks can be deceiving though, and it's clear that much more time was spent on crafting a distinct style than fine-tuning gameplay. If you've so much as watched a trailer for Desert Child, you've already experienced everything worth seeing in the game.

4 / 10.0 - Sonic Superstars
Dec 18, 2023

undefined. After its strong first impression I quickly started to see the cracks in Sonic Superstars, but I kept pushing forward in the hopes that when all was said and done the game would rise above its flaws. This never happened; the more I dug into the game, desperately hoping for it to pull everything off in the end, the more frustrated I became as I realized it was never going to do that. I don't like to directly compare a game from a totally different franchise in a review, but given how Superstars released only three days before Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it feels inevitable. Super Mario Bros. Wonder nailed its gameplay while reimagining Mario's look for a new era, setting what could be a new standard for its franchise for years to come. Meanwhile Sonic Superstars looks back, basing its look on the animated shorts accompanying the retro aesthetic of Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins. Superstars should've been the new standard to live up to Sonic's Genesis run, which just makes it sad that the game fails to even match the standard that was set over twenty years ago.

It stands to reason that if you liked the previous Trine games, you'll still like this one, and that probably goes double if you've got three friends to play with. Unfortunately I don't have three friends to play with, and I can't deny the dull and frustrating experience I had with it. Between poor puzzle design and combat that doesn't seem to belong in the game, there was simply nothing in Trine 5 that didn't feel like a waste of time.

Farming Simulator 23 is not a game for newcomers. My time playing was largely filled with confusion, and the in-game tutorials and guides do very little to point a new player in the right direction. It may appeal to core fans of the franchise since it is at least a portable version of the game, but the scaled-back features are likely to be what those players care about the most, and anyway the price tag of $45 is frankly a joke compared to the $8 this same version of the game costs on Android and iOS. Perhaps I'm wrong and there's some X factor a hardcore Farming Simulator fan can tell I'm missing, but Farming Simulator 23 is a clear non-starter for newcomers that clearly lacks plenty of content that longtime fans have come to enjoy on more powerful hardware.

I would be unsure about recommending the best port of this game now, but my feelings on the Switch version specifically are far less complicated. This is not a very good port, and the baffling difference in quality between the original game and its prequel only makes that more blatant. If I could rewind time, I would go back and avoid playing this port so I could simply live with my positive memories of the original instead of confronting the serious letdown the remaster has turned out to be.

4 / 10.0 - Restless Soul
Sep 6, 2022

Unfortunately I didn't find any of them to be very funny, which was only exacerbated by the non-stop parade of attempts at humor. The writing is just not very good, which could have been fine if there was a great game to get attached to, but that sadly isn't the case. Between poor writing and gameplay with less depth than a Mario Party minigame, Restless Soul simply doesn't have anything I think is worth seeing.

I normally believe it is bad form to talk about other reviews in my own review, but I cannot help but feel awkward and a bit guilty when I see the universal acclaim this game has gotten. Between a 90 on Metacritic and an 'Overwhelmingly Positive' rating on Steam, it would be dishonest for me to say that I think you will not enjoy Echo of Starsong. However, it would also be dishonest for me to pretend that I did. Basic probability says that you will likely love this game, but if the game's random dice roll events have taught me anything, it's that even the highest chance of success can still lead to a hollow tale of failure.

The roster now stands at around 40 fighters featuring characters through the end of the Shie Hassaikai arc in the fourth season of the anime. If you were really concerned with having the latest heroes and villains to play with in the arena, then I suppose your prayers have been answered. For anyone else, My Hero One's Justice was already a tough sell, and now that I can't even get past the title screen without the game freezing I cannot recommend this lazy sequel at all.
