8 / 10.0 - Dead Cells
Aug 6, 2018

If you’re looking for an easy version of Enter the Gungeon or a game where you have to plan every encounter, you’ll love Dead Cells. However, if you want an experience where you absolutely have to make the most of what RNG gives you, it might not be for you.

4 / 5.0 - Yakuza Kiwami 2
Aug 23, 2018

Yakuza Kiwami 2 might not be perfect but it's a fantastic example of why some things should be remastered. Not only does it perform better than it's PlayStation 2 counterpart, it looks good enough to be within this generation's standards.

Overall, Capcom Beat 'Em Up Bundle isn't perfect but it hits the right spots.

4 / 5.0 - Speed Brawl
Sep 24, 2018

Speed Brawl isn't a terribly complex game but it does a lot with very little. Even though the story is quite annoying and forgettable, combat is smooth enough to have fun. Combine this with time limits, RPG elements and online leaderboards and it's the type of game players can play for quite a while. And, if you're not competitive, simply play with others and have fun your way. So, if you're looking for a fun new beat 'em up, this is the game for you.

Even if it sounds like I'm against Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, it's actually a solid game. It might have the same feel as the original story, but manages to retain the charm that made the original series great. While combat isn't the best, defeating foes in an excessively violent way can be a lot of fun, ignoring the fact you might see the same finisher 10 times in an hour. Toss in some new characters, plenty to do and some of the same of the Yakuza series and you have an adventure that will probably delight fans of either.

When push comes to shove, Disgaea 1 Complete isn't perfect but it's still worth playing. It remains the best story in the series, complete with some of the best jokes. Sure, it could've been modernized and had more changed but the best elements remain. Between exploring item world, fighting post game bosses and achieving insane stats, it's the type of game that you could spend hundreds of hours in and still have plenty to do. So, if you want to lose yourself in a new turn based RPG, this is a fantastic choice, where as returning fans need to understand it's pretty much the same experience with a new coat of paint.

Overall, Warriors Orochi 4 might not do much to break the mold, but it's a lot of fun. With arguably too many characters, new attacks and powers to use, it's a nice twist on the familiar series. Toss in a new foe and a tons of things to level and do and it's hard for fans to say no. Sure, it might not have the best story or stand out in terms of the franchise, but if you're looking for a new Warriors game, this is a solid choice.

Persona Dancing: Endless Night Collection is a good rhythm game, but not a particularly great one. The dances, costumes and events are solid, though gameplay could be a bit better.  Between easy to miss inputs, occasionally hard to see prompts and asking thumbstick inputs makes it tricky. Not enough to ruin the experience, if anything it will all come with practice, though it is not as intuitive as Taiko no Tatsujin or DjMax. Even still, between the fun visuals, cute dances and returning to the beloved settings, there is enough to delight fans, even if it starts off rather bumpy.

Mortal Kombat 11 looks great and manages to make things fascinating to watch. With the ability to interact with people and tons of new and comical finishing moves, it has a lot to delight fans. Even if fatal blows and the unlock system need to be reworked, it's still a good fighting game. At most, I'd say it's something to be cautious of and certainly see what, if anything, changes in the future, it just hinges on what you want. Those looking to fight people online or just love the franchise will likely have a blast, it's those who really care about cosmetics that might take a hit.

Team Sonic Racing is ultimately a double edge sword. The concept is cool and the mechanics are there, it just won’t appeal to everyone. It’s hard to win a race and still lose, just like it’s a lot of fun to not have a last second mistake take away an obvious victory. If anything, it just changes where the source of frustration is. I wouldn’t say this is enough to ruin the experience, just that it’s less of a fix and more of a different experience.

Regardless of how simple The Princess Guide might appear, it's fun enough to enjoy. In a lot of ways, it seems like the perfect game for the Switch. Players can pick it up and have fun, change up their tactic or see what different units have to offer. The only real downside is the story, though the dialogue is often fun enough to get past it. Combine that with a fair amount of challenges, cute monsters and more and it's easy to have a blast with The Princess Guide.

4 / 5.0 - Borderlands 3

If you’re not looking for a deep adventure, engrossing RPG mechanics or foes that test your builds limit, then this is a fantastic choice. Otherwise, you might be a little underwhelmed, though I’d argue there is still more than enough to get your moneys worth.

4 / 5.0 - Concrete Genie
Oct 12, 2019

Concrete Genie isn't perfect, though it isn't awful either. The short adventure is elevated by the charms and overall message. Adding things like VR is even sweeter, as are all the options you get to make this your own personal experience. I would've liked to see a little more in terms of exploration in each zone or possibly a less regimented experience but it's still a charming game that goes to show you can do interesting things and say different things and still find some kind of success.

Children of Morta is basically everything you know about an action RPG, with random modifiers and level design. The blandness takes away from the dynamic nature, as does enemy placement, though most runs rely on making the most of whatever you got. And, if you're just not that good, enough grinding can reduce the difficulty to a point where it becomes a lot more accessible. When you consider the charm, amount of content, variety and multiplayer elements, it's a solid choice.

Success really depends on what you're looking for. Traditional fans will likely love the experience. Puzzles are fun, combat is intense, enemies feel unrelenting and there is a need to explore if you want to stay alive. Anyone hoping for a more intense run and gun adventure will likely be disappointed. There are absolutely some great moments, just questionable design choices and a rough opening prevent it from being perfect.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a good reminder of how innovative an indie developer can be. With a fascinating world to explore, problems to solve, and friends to make, it’s easy to be impressed. Sure, there are some shortcomings, such as weak combat or generic puzzles, though the core adventure certainly makes up for it.

8 / 10.0 - Back 4 Blood
Oct 11, 2021

Back 4 Blood is a fantastic entry in this genre that is held back by a couple of bold choices. Builds are a lot of fun until it becomes overly robotic and anything short of a really bad modifier puts you on a set loop. It also benefits from strong mechanics that make even the lowest difficulty feel unrelenting, along with rewarding team players. As much as I applaud Back 4 Blood for catering to a specific hardcore player base, it is a choice that will alienate certain players. I suggest asking yourself if you’re looking for a game to grind heavily or if a moderate challenge on a lower difficulty is enough. If you answered yes to either or just love the genre, odds are you’ll love this too. However, if you’re not looking for a massive team-based shooter, this is one experience that will leave you frustrated and disappointed.
