Metal Tales: Overkill is a fairly competent game; one that’s somewhat enjoyable but not remarkable in any way. You can have hours of fun with it, and can even play it with a friend or family member by your side thanks to couch co-op, but chances are you aren’t going to remember your time with it all that fondly. Still, if you’re into metal music and roguelikes, it might be worth picking up.

Metal Tales: Overkill’s twin-stick shooting gameplay and metal soundtrack is enjoyable for a short while but it falls out of tune fast. The game is kind of ugly to look at and you’ll likely finish it or grow bored of it pretty fast as I did. The game also needs a patch or two to fix some annoying bugs. It can be a fun time waster for an hour or two either by yourself or with a friend locally but it doesn’t have much to offer outside of that.

As a whole, Metal Tales: Overkill does feel like a very bare-bones version of The Binding of Isaac, just mixed with arguably a much better soundtrack, but a lot less item variety. It’s a good start, a solid foundation for better things to come, and if the game continues to get updated, it could really pull a lot of fans of the game genre, and music genre, into the game’s atmosphere. As it stands now, it’s a good start, but definitely not a huge amount of variety from run to run.

Sorry, but Metal Tales: Overkill falls way short of its very badass title. There just isn’t a lot of fun to be had here.
