Train Sim World 7 is a difficult game to review, because taken on its own merits it's clearly the most robust railway simulation Dovetail has released. But if you're coming from last year's Train Sim World 6, the differences are so minor that I could only really recommend it based on whether you want to play any of the new routes or not.The twist is that a free Starter Edition is available for existing players, and you can just import all of your existing content into this, so you may as well upgrade. As such, it's hard to criticise the dev too heavily here.Personally, I like the Airedale & Wharfedale route more than I expected, and I do think the additions like the live weather and tannoy announcements make a big difference to the bundle's overall immersion. I'm excited to see a few new countries join the release roadmap as well.

Train Sim World 7 is another extensive, detailed train simulator with three varied new routes, though the leap over its predecessors is small and weak performance, bugs and a huge 225 GB install dampen the experience.

Whilst I’m still not sure what the thought process was behind making TSW a yearly release, I can’t deny just how much enjoyment I get out of playing them. Train Sim World 7 is no different, providing three high-quality routes for returning fans to enjoy. Plus, the new Freight Hauler mode offers more sandbox fun than even the Free Roam mode. Add on the simplified control scheme that makes it accessible to more people than ever before, and you’re on track to be the best train simulation game ever. Therefore, Train Sim World 7 receives the Thumb Culture Gold Award!

Despite its somewhat limited technical aspects and its lack of innovation, if you love trains, the level of simulation the game offers will be enough to make it your go-to game. Still, it would be nice to see more European rail systems—such as the French or Spanish ones—which would add variety to the game’s all-too-familiar German and British settings. I invite you to give it a try through its free version.

Train Sim World 7 is a very comprehensive and accessible train simulator, and it’s especially recommended for those who want to get started with the series now. Its three new routes offer quite different experiences, and new features like real-time weather add to the immersion, but the lack of significant improvements over TSW6, the bugs, and room for optimization make it feel like less of an evolution.

Do you want me as the driver on the next train you get on? No, you most certainly do not! Am I a better driver than I was when I started Train Sim World 7? Yes, but in a formal debate you would have a hard time grounding that claim. None of that matters, though. Turn the knob to forward, put the brake in release, crank the throttle for speed, then sit back and watch the world that drifts by your window, beautiful, majestic, and calming. I’m still not fully sure how many issues I encountered were technical or me just not playing very well, but I put up with them because it was worth it. For that feeling of freedom you are afforded, I would do anything.

Train Sim World 7 delivers an impressively realistic railway experience with detailed routes, authentic train handling and dynamic weather effects. Its accessible learning curve makes it welcoming to newcomers, although sudden performance drops, an awkward camera and limited-impact new features keep it from reaching its full potential.

Train Sim World 7 is a fascinating example of a sequel that doesn’t need to reinvent its entire formula to feel worthwhile. Instead, Dovetail Games has concentrated on making Train Sim World more welcoming, more flexible and, in several areas, more immersive. The three new routes provide plenty of variety, with Yorkshire, Germany and Florida each offering their own distinct flavour, while Freight Hauler is the feature that could have the greatest long-term impact. There is still work to do. Some of the technical problems at launch are frustrating, and Freight Hauler in particular feels like a feature that will benefit enormously from continued refinement. But the foundations are extremely strong, and the willingness to continue updating the game gives me confidence that some of those rough edges will be smoothed out. Most importantly, Train Sim World 7 understands what makes this series special. It isn’t about rushing. It isn’t about constantly chasing the next objective. Sometimes it’s about leaving a station on time, watching the countryside disappear behind you, listening to the locomotive working and simply enjoying the journey. Whether you’re a railway obsessive or someone who just fancies seeing what all the fuss is about, Train Sim World 7 makes climbing into the cab remarkably easy. And once you’re there, you’ll probably find yourself saying the same thing I did more than once: “I’ll just do one more service.” That’s when you know a simulation is doing something right. Train Sim World 7 is a superb railway simulation that manages to make the series more accessible without sacrificing the depth that existing fans love. The new routes are varied, Freight Hauler is an excellent addition and Live Weather adds another layer of immersion. There are still some technical bumps to iron out, but when everything clicks into place, Train Sim World 7 delivers exactly what a great train simulator should: the freedom to slow down, sit back and enjoy the journey.

Train Sim World 7 expands the series with better visuals, varied routes, strong train handling, and an excellent Freight Hauler mode. Minor traffic and presentation issues remain, but the overall package is hard to fault.
