Critic Reviews for Time To Wake Up
Like the protagonist Alan, two souls—well—dwell within my breast when I think of Time To Wake Up. On one hand, I have rarely played an ego-adventure that interweaves its gameplay so organically with level design and narrative. Even though the game plays out largely linearly and with little challenge, the shifting episodes in this trauma-processing dream provide a great deal of variety. On the other hand, Time To Wake Up hinders itself realizing its potential. Many elements only scratch the surface. The visual level design and large parts of the narrative lack the courage to give themselves a truly distinctive spin. And the narrative center surrounding the radical book falls far short of its possibilities. Nonetheless, while writing these lines, I promptly added Eye Blink Twice's upcoming project, Up or Down?, to my Steam wishlist. Because Time To Wake Up made it abundantly clear to me that we can expect quite a bit from this studio in the future, even if the adventure itself, standing on its own, still stumbles a little.

A Time to Wake Up is an adventure and puzzle game built around a unique concept: switching between two different worlds through a blinking mechanic. It creates a strange and unsettling atmosphere that the developers have done a good job of establishing. However, the game fails to make the most of these elements. The story progresses slowly, and the puzzles lack a consistent level of enjoyment and challenge.

Time to Wake Up is a very solid title that manages to strike an emotional chord. Thanks to its intriguing setting, compelling story, and several creative ideas, it is a game that leaves a lasting impression on the player. Sometimes, we have to sleep through our worst nightmare to wake up to a brighter morning.

What makes Time to Wake Up worth recommending is the same thing that made the walking simulators of yore so good.
Spending an evening playing a game such as this one leaves a bittersweet taste. It’s a small but solid effort that leaves much food for thought. Most people, and in particular introverts, went through a difficult childhood, myself included. Being bullied meant you had to stand your ground, but not everyone chose that route. Time To Wake Up tells a tragic story with an earnest ending that, while it may feel unearned, the developer’s intention does not go unnoticed. Perhaps, if you are ever in that situation, you will also find the courage to fight for a better future.
