Odd Town offers a distinctive visual style, a nice blend of silly and dark humour, and an interesting mystery wrapped in a compact French town. Unfortunately, the world isn't dynamic enough to turn the sandbox into a truly immersive experience, while the limited variety leaves little reason to keep playing once the novelty wears off. The story half fares better, but numerous parts of it walk a fine line between challenging and aggravating. There's a great idea here, and plenty of personality, but not quite enough depth or refinement to make it all work. It feels small and unfinished.

Odd Town is difficult to recommend broadly. Its unusual visuals, charming animations, and strange inhabitants give it an identity I appreciate, and there is fun here once its rules make sense. The onboarding and controller feel make reaching that point harder than it should be. If its particular brand of weirdness appeals to you, you might enjoy the visit. I would understand just as easily if you decided to leave early.

As I said in the opening, an interesting open world is significantly valuable to me, and the one in Odd Town is formidable as far as environments go. However, it’s let down by everything else. Well, maybe not everything. The basic quest design, while repetitive, maintained my interested, and some of the side jobs are enjoyable. However, without an even halfway decent narrative or an interesting cast to make the world feel really alive, the whole thing is limp. Odd Town is too normal.
