Galactic Civilizations III: Mercenaries Reviews
It's light on features for an expansion, but Mercenaries adds some welcome volatility to the 4X sandbox.
Mercenaries is a disappointing expansion to last year's Galactic Civilizations III that limits your freedom on the battlefield.
As I've already stated, Galactic Civilizations III is a must have for fans of the genre. The Mercenaries expansion adds to the already great game with new races to play with, new campaigns to conquer and new ways to dominate the galaxy.
In summary, if you like GalCiv3, you will like this expansion. The primary problem with it is simply the lack of new material. Other than the Bazaar, this has the feeling of a well-done couple of DLCs. Not really worth the 20 bucks except for fans of the series.
This expansion for Galactic Civilizations III is a solid gameplay update that introduces the ability to buy merc ships, overall adding to the long war space battles that the base game introduced.
All the same, there's enough here to bring you back to Galactic Civilizations III and give you enough to enjoy a good few more hours with space battles and planet cultivation, and if that sounds like it's worthwhile then the price might not put you off. Everyone else may want to wait for a sale.
Playing against other players in Galactic Civilizations 3: Mercenaries offers far more bang for your buck as far as this DLC goes. The AI does not seem to utilise the expansion, whereas with humans it can indeed be a very intense rush for the good ships. It will feel slightly cheap to those just beating on computers, though.
