Monster Hunter Stories is a good spin-off which fits in the Monster Hunter's universe. The game is quite different, but the player find his marks easily. Nevertheless the game is, first of all, intended for a young audience who wants to master the different aspects of the serie. However, you can have a good time waiting for Monster Hunter World.

A simplified combat system, empty locations and a naive plot for the youngest ones can disappoint the fans of the series. However, less demanding players and beginners in the universe will be able to enjoy great cutscenes, a kind story, an exciting collection of monsters and non-stressing battles with beautiful special attacks.

Monster Hunter Stories is a delightful little JRPG that makes a big splash with its adorable visuals and addictive battle system. Performance problems aside, this is a great introduction to Capcom's beloved franchise.
Fans will appreciate the new take on time honored series mechanics in Monster Hunter Stories, while newcomers will find a more accessible and inviting game than the franchise has ever had before.

If you go into Stories expecting a true successor to previous Monster Hunter games, it may not impress. However, it’s a solid RPG with a younger demographic in mind. This certainly isn’t to say that an older fan won’t enjoy its charming story or gorgeous graphics, but it’s obviously intended as an introduction to the wider Monster Hunter world.
Amazing art style, tedious battle system and a difficulty that's aimed at young children - not one for Monster Hunter fans, but maybe their kids. If they like Rock, Paper, Scissors, that is.
Monster Hunter Stories is a descent Pokémon knock off for fans of the genre, but it lacks good story telling and the mechanics is hard to get used to.

Monster Hunter Stories definitely isn’t as engaging or as action-oriented as its predecessors, but that doesn’t really seem to be its goal. There are definitely some obvious ideas not implemented into the game, for whatever reason, that might have made it more fun for players familiar with the series. At its core, however, MHS is a stepping stone for younger players into a more extensive series. The fact that it managed to hold onto the personality of the world Monster Hunter takes place in while making it more accessible is a major success for the game, which isn’t something every developer can say of their work. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go back to having the Monster Hunter World trailer on an endless loop.
