A great spin off for one of the most beloved franchises in videogames.

I absolutely thoroughly enjoyed my more than 50 hours with Monster Hunter Stories so far. It effectively eliminates the oh-so-common boring RPG grind, implements a novel turn-based battle system, and sincerely surprises me with seemingly limitless customizability. Though wrapped in a pleasant, sugary coating, Monster Hunter Stories did all of this while retaining the spirit of the Monster Hunter world with some small yet enjoyable nods to fans. I can't wait to dive back into the endgame and hatch myself a Kirin.

Monster Hunter Stories may not please hardcore fans of the franchise but definitely everyone who was always interested in the series but constantly shied away because of its complexity.

A fine example of how to transfer a well known franchise into a different game type. Must play title

For a spin-off that manages to change the core of what makes the mainline series so popular, Monster Hunter Stories does an amazing job becoming a stand-out title for the series.

With the 3DS nearing the end of its lifespan, games like this are often left to the wayside; but for loyalists and those not quite ready to upgrade, Monster Hunter Stories is definitely a game worth picking up. With a fun battle system that doesn't rely on grinding to level up, and a bright and open world to explore, Monster Hunter Stories takes its namesake in a completely different and impressive direction.

Monster Hunter Stories is an excellent adventure that channels the colourful world of Capcom's storied series into a joyous JRPG. It suffers from performance issues on non-New 3DS hardware, but it's still full of personality, beautifully presented and fun to play, with combat that's easy to grasp but engaging throughout. Longtime MonHun fans will appreciate Stories as a thoughtfully-made spin-off, but the gameplay template and tone are so different that you don't need to be familiar with — or even enjoy! — mainline Monster Hunter to have a great time here. Regardless of whether you've been hunting Hornetaurs since the beginning or couldn't tell a Felyne from a Fatalis, Stories is yet another charming 3DS RPG that's well worth your time.

Monster Hunter Stories definitely isn’t as engaging or as action-oriented as its predecessors, but that doesn’t really seem to be its goal. There are definitely some obvious ideas not implemented into the game, for whatever reason, that might have made it more fun for players familiar with the series. At its core, however, MHS is a stepping stone for younger players into a more extensive series. The fact that it managed to hold onto the personality of the world Monster Hunter takes place in while making it more accessible is a major success for the game, which isn’t something every developer can say of their work. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go back to having the Monster Hunter World trailer on an endless loop.
