It's been eight years since Sonic Mania first launched (man, time really is a never-ending march), and one of the biggest tragedies about the entire game is that a sequel was never made. That wasn't the Sonic Mania studio's decision though, as the idea for a sequel planned by the team was reportedly scrapped due to a mixture of creative differences and Sega wanting to move away from pixel art.

Instead of Sonic Mania 2, we got Sonic Superstars, which is considered an intensely mediocre game among the community. A lot of fans have always wondered what could have been if Sonic Mania 2 was greenlit by Sega, and thanks to one of the leads on the project, we actually now know what it would have looked like.

On Bluesky earlier today, Sonic Mania lead Christian Whitehead celebrated the eighth anniversary of his game by dropping a lore fact about Kanga Clanga, one of the enemies from the classic Sonic the Hedgehog series. That wasn't the main draw though, as Whitehead also rather casually included a couple of screenshots that included the robot from a prototype of what appears to be a potential Sonic Mania 2.
