Without a doubt, Silent Hill 2 is one of the most iconic and beloved psychological horrors out there, especially now that it's had new life breathed into it with last year's remake. One of the most interesting things about Silent Hill 2 is how vague its story is, and how up for interpretation many of the monsters and moments are.
As fun as it is to theorise why James sees hospital nurses as monsters and why Pyramid Head even exists in the first place, these headcanons are just that - headcanons.
