Released in April, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 proved itself an ambitious turn-based RPG that turned the genre on its head, earning millions of fans around the world and establishing itself as one of the best games of 2025.
Much of the game’s success can be attributed to Sandfall Interactive’s unique approach to combat design. Instead of relying on a rote rock-paper-scissors style popular in most turn-based games, Expedition 33 made liberal use of real-time parrying and dodging to transform even the most mundane encounters into nail-biters. That, combined with a masterclass in visual presentation, ensured Sandfall’s debut title became an instant hit among players. Sales were soon to follow as Expedition 33 managed to sell 3.3 million copies in 33 days, a commercial milestone that felt almost destined.
