One of the surprise announcements of this week's State of Play was Deus Ex Remastered, a remaster of the legendary immersive sim from Ion Storm.
However, as much as everyone loved hearing the game's iconic title theme, the reaction to the announcement trailer has been negative. The wavy, surreal quality of the upscaled textures has fans concerned, and there has been considerable criticism of the updated character models.
Aspyr, a studio that almost exclusively remasters or ports games, is responsible for remastering Deus Ex. Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, KOTOR 2 and Tomb Raider IV-VI are some of Aspyr's recent remaster projects.
Unfortunately for Aspyr, Nightdive Studios has earned a reputation for quality in the immersive sim community, and fans immediately got their hopes up that Nightdive was the studio remastering Deus Ex when the announcement trailer began.
Nightdive Studios is responsible for remaking System Shock and remastering System Shock 2, both of which are very highly praised by classic immersive sim fans.
