Street Fighter 6's Developers Were "Shocked" When They Found Out The Capcom Cup Would Be Paywalled

Capcom's announcement that the Capcom Cup and SFL: World Championships would be pay-per-view events—reminiscent of a bygone era of esports—predictably angered the Street Fighter 6 community.

What's even more puzzling is that, according to SF6 director Takayuki Nakayama, the development team wasn't aware that Capcom would be paywalling Street Fighter's biggest esports events until after the announcement went live.

A user responded to an older post where Nakayama spoke about the esports and development divisions being completely separate, asking if this separation is the reason for the Capcom Cup controversy.

"It may sound strange, but it's true," Nakayama replied. "Revenue targets and assigned tasks differ fundamentally by department. Even the development team was surprised by this announcement (at least [Shuhei] Matsumoto and I were shocked at the venue). That said, since this matter occurred within the same company, we are currently discussing it. We apologise for any concern this may have caused."

Nakayama and Matsumoto were at Tokyo Game Show when the announcement went live, which couldn't have been a nice surprise for the pair.
