Firaxis' latest update blog for Civilization 7 has revealed that the studio is currently play-testing a mode that allows players to continue playing as the same civilisation for an entire game, rather than just for a single age.

This is how every Civilization game operated before Civilization 7, but Firaxis sought to reinvent the series' formula with an 'Ages' system that mandated the player choose a new civilisation for each of three distinct ages. The purpose of this change was to keep players engaged throughout the whole game, because past entries suffered from a snowball effect where one player's victory is all but guaranteed halfway through a match.

However, this reinvention of the wheel proved unpopular with players, as evidenced by Civilization 7's concurrent player count being lower than that of Civ 6 and Civ 5. The implementation of the system proved jarring, and the constant switching of civilisations during a match made players feel disconnected from the empire they were building, undermining the power fantasy of the series.
