The announcement of Deus Ex Remastered—developed by Aspyr Media—was immediately controversial following the airing of the game's announcement trailer at a recent State of Play.
The remaster updates the textures and lighting of the classic immersive sim, but not necessarily for the better. In an interview with FRVR, one of Deus Ex's original art directors, Jerry O'Flaherty, also expressed criticism of the remaster after seeing it for the first time during the interview.
"Oh, what the f**k," O'Flaherty exclaimed. "No. This did not need to happen. Sorry, whoever was involved with this. Oh man, yeah, no. If you're gonna do it, yeah, alright, why not? Why am I judging?"
The majority of O'Flaherty's career took place in a period where photorealism was nowhere near attainable, so artists had to get more creative with their 3D modelling.
