Square Enix has released its financial statement for the first half of the 2025-26 fiscal year, and sales and profits are down, driven largely by a fairly quiet six-month period with very few major releases.
In a press release outlining its latest financial results, Square Enix reveals that sales are down by 15% when compared to the same six-month period last year, while operating income has fallen by 28.8%.
The company puts this disparity down to new games generating "lower sales than releases such as three Kingdom Hearts catalog titles on Steam...the previous year". Despite that, Square Enix says its video games business "returned to profitability" this year, largely thanks to expense-related technicalities.
Square Enix's MMORPG segment also declined, again largely due to the release of Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail last year. It might not have offered the game's best story, but it sure did boost Square Enix's business.
In fairness to Square Enix, it has been a pretty quiet six months for the publisher. In the six-month period ending on September 30th, Square Enix's catalog consists entirely of ports, including a Switch 2 version of Bravely Default and the Xbox Series X|S release of Final Fantasy XVI....
