Original Resident Evil Director Shinji Mikami Has Revealed His New Studio After 3 Years Of Silence

Shinji Mikami—director of the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil 4, and most recently, Hi-Fi Rush—has announced his new venture, Unbound, a "fully independent company, developing high-end consumer games, creating original AAA titles."

The website for Unbound (stylised UNBND) has actually been live for over a year, but was only recently spotted and circulated around (nice spot, VGC). According to the website, Unbound was formed on November 30, 2022, which lines up with the time period that Mikami departed Tango Gameworks, a studio formed by Mikami that was then acquired by ZeniMax Media (which was in turn acquired by Xbox).

Mikami is the "representative director" of Unbound, which currently employs around 50 people and aims to expand to 150 during development of its "high-end" Unreal Engine 5 project. The full scope of the team is unknown, but one of the developers at Unbound is Masato Kimura, who worked with Mikami on several projects, including Ghostwire: Tokyo and Resident Evil.

An interview given by Kimura for the company's website only reveals vague details about Unbound's upcoming game, promising a "rich gaming experience" and immersion. The interview does make clear that Unbound is looking to create both AAA and AA...
