Neptunia Sisters VS Sisters has some good ideas at its core, and every now and then it manages to be genuinely entertaining and draw you into the affairs of Gamindustri’s goddesses, which are undoubtedly the experience’s strongest point. Unfortunately, everything else is handled in a clumsy and anachronistic fashion, ultimately undermining a game that, despite starting with fairly low expectations, still manages to disappoint.

As a celebration of the franchise’s 35th anniversary, Final Bar Line is an essential addition to the collection of any true Final Fantasy fan. Revisiting each game through its musical crescendos is an unparalleled experience—an indescribable rush of emotion that simply has to be experienced firsthand.

The centerpiece of the Deluxe Edition is, naturally, The Great Yokai Battle +Hell, a brand-new experience that pays tribute to the series’ original entry, bringing together its protagonists, supporting characters, and antagonists in a highly replayable package built around classic arcade mechanics.

The problem isn’t so much the shaky suspension of disbelief or the ludonarrative dissonance that stems from it, but rather the glaring inconsistency in the game’s overall intent. You never really get to live the Hogwarts student experience or feel the day-to-day life of a student, which is particularly problematic in a title that should, above all else, strive to capture that very feeling.

The linear levels certainly don’t help. The experience boils down to mowing down a dozen identical enemies before moving on to the next wave, repeating the process ad nauseam until you reach the level’s boss. Forget about exploring the environment or uncovering hidden secrets—in Wanted: Dead, all you do is move from one checkpoint to the next, with barely a surprise along the way.

Moonrider is fun, visually striking, and great to listen to, with its retro aesthetic hitting all the right notes. It’s a real shame, though, that for seasoned gamers accustomed to this kind of game, Moonrider feels like an absolute walk in the park.

Tango Gameworks really hit the mark, giving a game that is clearly not a AAA production a distinct and unmistakable style—and, more importantly, one that doesn’t need to be. In fact, it’s precisely through its simpler, more immediate structure that the game truly shines, bringing the experience back to the fundamentals of gaming, with a score-based approach, if you will.

A derivative open-world game with a simplistic combat system that is partially salvaged by its devastating magic and functional movement mechanics. All of this is wrapped in a predictable, poorly written story populated by decidedly forgettable characters.

A simple, classic gameplay system forms the backbone of the experience, built around three types of power-ups (red, blue, and purple) and bombs that clear enemy bullets from the screen. On top of this sits an equally straightforward scoring system.

All the classic Monster Hunter staples are here, along with some interesting additions that tweak the gameplay just enough to make the experience feel fresh and enjoyable.

Despite its simplicity, Breakers, which already looked dated upon release, still manages to evoke a sense of nostalgia for an era defined by pixels, button mashing, and uncontrollable rage.

Chained Echoes does things that many of its genre peers, even much bigger ones, simply don’t. It takes the best of what the genre has to offer, cuts out much of the tedious or outdated baggage, and adds something fresh and compelling to the mix. It then wraps it all in an epic story, a genuinely meaningful political and social intrigue, and a few genre clichés, creating an explosive cocktail.

As a sequel, River City Girls 2 is far more ambitious, introducing a wealth of new elements and expanding the playable cast with new characters, all while retaining the classic gameplay feel that made me fall in love with the series—and hopefully will win over plenty of others as well.

DRAINUS ranks pretty high on our list of favorites STG. While there are a few things that could use some refinement, it’s an exhilarating and thoroughly entertaining horizontal-scrolling shmup. It’s also a great entry point for newcomers to the genre, without forcing them to tear all their hair out while they’re still young.

A game that makes its entrance without much fanfare, yet boasts excellent storytelling and an engaging combat system. Aside from a few minor performance hiccups, it’s a game of outstanding quality, offering a rather unique experience in a gaming landscape where its particular niche remains relatively uncrowded.
