The Digital Fix's Reviews

Dec 11, 2019

I do not think for one minute that this is a game for everyone. However, if you have a aptitude for learning a technique and like winter sport simulations then this game could be for you. After a steep early learning curve I really started to enjoy it, it works well and has a simple yet addictive gameplay loop.

Arise: A Simple Story, while being a simple game, has an immense amount of things going for it. Its time manipulation mechanic is well implemented and makes you want to explore each stage thoroughly. Its beautiful, soothing and very well made. I am sure most players will find something they like about this quirky little title, I for one, found a lot to like about it.

A brilliant port and a brilliant game. There aren't any real issues with the game whatsoever and nothing that would put you off purchasing it. If you are a fan of the series or even interested in the Civilization series, it is a must buy!

Not a collection for everyone, but for those gripped by this pure nostalgia. These titles haven’t necessarily aged well, but there are enough added features to mitigate some unfair difficulty with; save features, a rewind button, extra difficulty settings, and the ability to watch a game playthrough and jump in at any point. Also with a lot of bonus content with multiple versions of each game, interviews with the creators and a plethora of original art that grounds you in the context to help you appreciate the games more.

7 / 10.0 - Golem (VR)
Nov 29, 2019

I really feel that Golem is a short jump away from being one of PSVR's best titles. If the movement controls were more intuitive and the tracking of the Move controller in battle was more accurate it would be an amazing game. I loved the gameplay loop and the combat is superb when it functions correctly. I really enjoyed Golem most of the time but I feel some people will get annoyed with it too easily, even I did at times.

10 / 10.0 - GRIS
Nov 27, 2019

This is the first time I have given a game 10/10. I said I never would give a game that score but I cannot find anything bad to say about Gris. Its near-perfect. Brilliant art style, beautiful music and brilliant gameplay. It all combines into a controllable watercolour of pure joy. Just go and play it now, I wish I could experience it again for the first time.

Bad press aside, I found Pokemon Shield to be a solid entry in the Pokemon franchise. If only the difficulty was a bit elevated for seasoned players.

Terminator: Resistance continues the trend of bad Terminator games and is better off being Terminated into the bin. You won't be back to play this one, that's for sure.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterpiece. No other game has ever tried and succeeded to capture a sense of a time and place long gone while also blending social commentary so well. The addition of a multiplayer mode that's a real step up from Rockstar's last effort makes Red Dead Redemption 2 unmissable on PC.

Civilization VI on consoles is as good as an experience as it could be - it's an essential game and the fact that it's now available to a wider audience is a great thing.

Jackbox Party Pack 6 is an enjoyable set of party games, albeit one that probably needs an audience at 16-35 years old to get the most out of it. It doesn't have the raw humour or appeal that, say, Party Packs 2 and 3 embody, but it's still a solid title in its own right.

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a beautiful monster, with the best bits of multiple games stapled together to make a fun, if occasionally frustrating, action game in the Star Wars universe.

The only thing that marred this fun VR romp, in my opinion, is the length of the game. I would have liked a few more levels to explore and more animals to find. What is there though is well made, beautiful and fun to play. At the end of the day, that is what is important, I had a great time playing it and so did my family.

Blacksad: Under the Skin has a pleasantly engaging story and fine, if somewhat repetitive, game play mechanics. Unfortunately, the end result just did not seem to be a finished product. Significant patch work will be needed to do justice to the story.

While the racing is fun and the customization is deep, Need for Speed: Heat feels far too familiar. The day-night gameplay loop does mix things up a little but this racing title does very little to separate it from its predecessors. Its story is predictable and its presentation is underwhelming. Need for Speed: Heat is fun but predictable and slightly stale.

7 / 10.0 - VR Ping Pong Pro
Nov 18, 2019

Even with its weird physics and slight controller issues, VR Ping Pong Pro can be entertaining. You just need to get used to the handling and eventually it will feel natural and be fun to play. Unfortunately, the initial issues may put some players off.

New Super Lucky's Tale is a delight to play, and I strongly encourage young and old alike to give it a try. Just make sure you are patient with loading screens...

8 / 10.0 - Sparklite
Nov 14, 2019

Though levels are procedurally generated, Sparklite succeeds in building a cohesive world that feels as though it has been carefully designed, making it a great entry point for those apprehensive about this trait of roguelikes.

The Doctor Who fan in me loved his time with this title. From a non-Who fan, video game standpoint though, its negatives weigh heavy on the overall experience. Its short, too easy and sometimes cumbersome. If your a Who fan though you will love parts of it, as I did. Maybe wait for the title to go on sale.
