9.5 / 10.0 - Just Cause 3
Dec 1, 2015

There are so few ways that this game could be a better version of itself, or better at what it does. Just Cause 3 is, from any way I care to think about it, a massive success.

9.5 / 10.0 - Nioh
Feb 8, 2017

Nioh is a fantastic Samurai action-RPG with excellent Dark Souls inspired combat, multiplayer options and tons of content. Not for the faint of heart. Boss fights can be as tedious as they are challenging.

9.5 / 10.0 - Aaero
Apr 11, 2017

It's only through a combination of rich, collaborative, and altogether interactive elements that something like this can be born, a piece of software that shirks tedious story and plodding industry conventions in favor of pummeling sound and pure, unadulterated gameplay. In that regard, Aaero is exclusively, utterly, and unapologetically 'video game'.

9.5 / 10.0 - Super Mario Odyssey
Nov 2, 2017

Super Mario Odyssey is a fun game, an unoriginal observation that feels nonetheless vital in the modern gaming landscape. It is a game that tasks you with finding joy, and then lets you point yourself in the right direction. It is a game you should play.

9.5 / 10.0 - God of War
Apr 13, 2018

God of War works for what it keeps and works for what it changes. It's a foundation for a series that's suddenly a tentpole once again.

9.5 / 10.0 - Marvel's Spider-Man
Sep 5, 2018

Spider-Man is a fantastic action game with great movement and combat and a compelling story that's only dragged down from time to time with boring missions and QTE-based boss fights.

These are simple games by today’s standards, but really, I kind of think it’s what the industry needs—light-hearted, bright, satisfying, happy-go-lucky fun. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go 100% all the things.

9.5 / 10.0 - NBA 2K19
Sep 11, 2018

Because of the way NBA 2K18 fell off last year, I tried to find the potential for major problems further into NBA 2K19's release cycle, but I couldn't. Whether you're a person who plays single-player, multiplayer, offline or online, this is the most complete sports game I've ever played. There is no such thing as a perfect sports game, but this is as close as it gets.

9.5 / 10.0 - GRIS

Go play this game, and if you have a chunk of time, play it all at once. Spanish developer Nomada Studio has created something truly special.

Do yourself a favor and pick this one up. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is absolutely one of my favorite games of 2019, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The SMB series has become one of the most consistent, and well-developed sports gaming franchises available.

It’s remarkable, and it will stay with me a long while, just like the first.

9.5 / 10.0 - Ghost of Tsushima

It is easily one of the best games of the entire PS4 generation, and given its competition, that’s saying something.

9.5 / 10.0 - EA Sports UFC 4
Aug 14, 2020

There is no such thing as a perfect game, but there can be a perfect experience with a title because the slight issues you may experience don’t drastically hinder your enjoyment. The latest UFC game is very close to that rare benchmark.

The nostalgia is strong with this one, but not a necessary component. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2 is just plain, good old-fashioned arcade fun. I think we could all use a healthy dose of that right now.

9.5 / 10.0 - Hitman 3
Jan 19, 2021

So it’s 5 levels really, but they are excellent levels, masterful executions of a brilliant concept by a team at the top of their game. And, on top of that, we’ve already got the other two games—which are available for dirt cheap, now—to make a single, expansive, globetrotting experience that sees our familiar, baldheaded puppetmaster accessing the world’s ultra-wealthy just when they thought they were invincible, dancing through the class divides like the nameless angel of death that he is, and then blowing someone up with an exploding golf ball or something.

God of War Ragnarok is a beautiful, moving game, no longer purely centered on a father getting to know his son, but also about vengeance, forgiveness and attempting to change both prophecy, and the people we used to be, both of which prove to be equally difficult.

9.5 / 10.0 - Hi-Fi Rush

I would recommend Hi-Fi Rush to anyone, even many non-gamers. It’s joyful, addicting and something I may play twice just for the hell of it. An absolute win.

9.5 / 10.0 - Starfield
Aug 31, 2023

I really do love this game. Yes, Bethesda doesn’t match some of its peers in many places, but in part that’s because it’s trying to do everything, all at once. But if you wanted a giant Bethesda RPG set in space with better combat and a whole lot of time to level and build things and explore and find secrets, yeah, this is it. They did it. Enjoy.

9.4 / 10.0 - NHL 20
Sep 19, 2019

If you’re a sports gamer who isn’t necessarily into hockey video games, you may be missing out on a title that has produced a rapidly improving product over the past two years. NHL 20 is my favorite edition of the series since NHL 13, and one of the best in franchise history.
