A perfect introduction to the stealth horror genre for younger gamers and a great time for those who already love it.
Overall, though not without its flaws, Unicorn Overlord is a fantastic tactical RPG that has a highly rewarding and satisfying gameplay loop.
Pacific Drive is a strange and unique survival experience that should receive plaudits for pushing the boat out creatively, and inserting you into an unnerving climate with a battered old whale of a hooptie to tour about in. Where Pacific Drive can falter is that it proceeds to force you into performing manual busywork with little payoff, but this is offset by the inherent mystery surrounding it all. As long as you don't mind refurbishing a rickety four-wheeler, collecting resources, and becoming prey to all the threats you'll find in the Olympic Peninsula, then you might just be in for a treat, but everyone else might want to tear themselves away to do the frustrating repetition of it all. But go on, give this old jalopy a go.
Bears In Space is my favourite type of game. It's well put together, doesn't take itself too seriously, and puts a lot of effort into keeping things interesting for the player. The story is often nonsensical, but it doesn't matter, the gameplay does all the heavy lifting. Its comedy might not be for everyone, but I enjoyed it for the most part. It feels like it could be something put together for Adult Swim or Comedy Central in the early noughties and there's definitely a Rick & Morty influence in there somewhere too.
Jodie Comer and David Harbour delight in this devilishly dark reboot of a survival horror classic.
One of the most triumphant Xbox games of 2023 is now one of the most Excellent PS5 games of 2024. Party On!
A campy open world adventure with old school sensibilities and buckets of charm.
The controls are fairly simple, and the experience is a good challenge, which will require you to engage. You never lose your progress (as there is no absolute death), and when you lose (or flee) combat, you can return to your latest home point. It is challenging but not punishing, which provides a balance which suits the overall style of mystery. I like the unique experience that Tenderfoot Tactics offers the player. The dreamy, eerie, and etheric world is well formed and encourages a dream like meander through the space. The enchanting visuals are the hero of the game which makes the world well worth the exploration.
Penny's Big Breakaway is a fantastic debut from Evening Star and a must play for platformer fans everywhere.
Another year another WWE 2K game going through the motions, although some of those motions are pleasing. For every good step this year's game has taken to add fan-pleasing features, it does so on unsteady feet like it's been stuck in Boston Crab for an entire week. 2K24 is attempting to tread waywardly onwards towards some kind of fully-featured salvation ensnared in a vivid vision of the ultimate WWE game, but doesn't have the ingredients to realize it. The new 2K Showcase of the Immortals mode is a delicious offering with many new matches to replicate, despite the ancient 2K Showcase formula showing its wrinkles and grey hairs related to its dreary Simon Says antics . The new match types are exciting and worthwhile inclusions despite some minor gripes pertaining to how they've been implemented. And then you've got a boatload of subtle additions and tweaks that show admirable improvements, yet are still far too small to make a tremendous impact. WWE 2K24 is a fine game and it is showing Rhodes towards the wrestling videogames promise land, but right now it's nowhere near the Head of the Table.
Donkey Kong has swiped some mini Mario's from the toy factory, it's your job to get them back.
Slave Zero X is a fantastic game with fast paced action and combat combined with great gameplay rhythm.
Tomb Raider Remastered I-III is more of an updated version of the main games rather than a fully remastered one. Apart from the new modern control which still struggles to keep up with today's standards, there isn't anything new to the game. While that may be good for the old fans of the series, it will create a struggle for new players and therefore not be able to enjoy some of the best exploration games out there.
Helldivers 2 is a lot of fun, assuming you can get into a match to actually play it with other people. If you're not interested in the co-op aspect of the game, then it might be a tough sell. You can technically play solo, while still being online, but there are no bots to assist, and the difficulty curve is largely designed to be tackled by multiple people. I can't guarantee the game would be anywhere near as enjoyable played like this.
Persona 3 Reload hits the remake sweet spot, honoring its roots with a stunning visual upgrade and fun new content, making it a must-play for veterans and newcomers alike.
The payday after a heist is boring... unless you're a Turnip Boy!
Baffling business decisions aside, Infinite Wealth is another stellar entry in the Like a Dragon series.
Another Code: Recollection brings together a pair of stone cold cult classics Switch owners wont want to miss.
The Last Soldier of the Ming Dynasty is a broken game filled with good but unnourished ideas. From the environmental design to simple movement animation seems clunky and unpolished all the way. If the combat of the game wasn't good enough, there wouldn't be much of a reason to keep playing the game.
War Hospital is an interesting take on the hospital management scenario. It offers up some unique challenges and has some genuinely difficult choices throughout while nailing the tone. Gameplay can get a little repetitive, at least early on there's not a huge number of different tasks to complete to keep it varied and interesting, but with all that said, I enjoyed War Hospital for the most part. Aside from a few instances of audio dropping, seemingly at random, it was a bug-free experience that ran well for the vast majority of my time with it. This isn't going to be for everyone, even those interested in this genre, but it's worth a look nonetheless.
