ReCore has a lot of great things going for it. Joule is a likable protagonist and her robotic companions are outright adorable. The platforming exploration is an absolute blast.
Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 may have a few additions for the sake of it, but it’s still one of the best score-attack games you could hope to play.
The Tomorrow Children is weird, wonderful and oddly hollow, lacking neither the addictive hooks to keep you playing, nor the sense of community to bond you to your town. It's worth a look for its unique visuals and strange, slightly sinister atmosphere, but don't be surprised if your interest wanes after the first few hours.
God Eater 2 Rage Burst is a great Monster Hunter-style JRPG that takes a wee bit too long to get into its stride. The early story lacks any depth, and unimaginative character designs make it hard to invest in NPCs from the get-go. The lacklustre tutorial system also makes it all to easy to miss some of the more interesting character development, crafting and combat features.
It all comes together wonderfully, however, asking you to use your wit and hard proof to win a case as opposed to just winging it and hoping for the best. That just won't work. For all the bells and whistles Phoenix Wright has, its courtroom battles – when done right – are excellent, and Spirit Of Justice gets them spot on.
Indeed, with two factions and multiple races and classes, each with their own starter areas and specific questlines, there’s a good chance that your experience of WoW will be very different from mine. In a way, reviewing it’s like reviewing London or New York City from a week-long stay – you can only hope to tackle a slice, not the whole shebang.
If you’re willing to accept a game which is slightly rough around the edges, and will remind you of Portal at every turn without actually being Portal, then The Turing Test could be for you. There’s a lot here to like: a philosophical dialogue about ethics, transhumanism and the singularity, in conjunction with occasionally brilliant design. There’s enough on offer here that I sincerely hope that Bulkhead Interactive make another game, and next time, think slightly further outside the white-panelled box than they did in this endeavour.
If you're looking for a quick distraction that will stick a plaster over the gaping wound of your desire for Attack on Titan season 2, then Wings of Freedom may stem the bleeding. Unfortunately, extended play might cause a few injuries of its own, because for a game about giants and verticality, the game's long-term experience is woefully flat.
King of Fighters XIV is very much a new KOF game. It retains all of the hallmarks of the series, from the beautiful backgrounds and giant roster to the challenging combos and large amount to learn. If you’re into the genre and are looking for something that will reward you for putting in time, then SNK’s reputation for building fighting games that allow for that should speak for itself.
Assetto Corsa has its share of problems. It can't compete with Forza, Gran Turismo or Project Cars when it comes to looks, cars or tracks. The career mode is tedious and often frustrating, and the presentation makes it feel even nerdier and less accessible than it is. Yet the core driving experience remains magnificent, with some of the best handling and most immersive racing around. This isn't a racer for everyone – it's tough, demanding and a bit too hardcore – but if you want a sim with thrills and authenticity, it's well worth taking for a spin.
Overall, Madden 17 could use some more fine-tuning – be that in the number of catches or injuries that happen in an average campaign – but it still sits at a very high level, just like its predecessor.
Deus Ex: Mankind Divided could – and should – have been amazing. All the ingredients were there: an intriguing premise, engaging and mature narrative themes, solid gameplay foundations and a beautiful look. However, the rushed plot, nonsensical conclusion, under-developed characters and continued shortcomings in combat mean this is a title which fails to live up to its potential.
Street Fighter V was always a brilliant game from the competitive multiplayer side. It's now at a point where it's much easier to recommend, and all signs point to SFV having an extremely rosy future as the leading fighting game.
Grow Up takes everything that made Grow Home so entertaining and adds to it accordingly, but the predictability of any sequel means it falls a little flatter than before.
No Man’s Sky is a good game. Sean Murray and Hello Games’ vision of creating a vast universe on a scale unseen in video games has no doubt been achieved, and will certainly provide everyone who plays it with something unique.
Underground is most valuable to those who are already the most devoted Division fans, although if you’re willing to put in some hours, there’s nothing to stop you joining their number.
ABZÛ is a visually stunning arthouse game with a fantastic score and some awe-inspiring, powerful moments, but it's one that can't match the achievements of its nearest relative, Journey. The gameplay's never as compelling as the visuals, and while its undersea kingdom is a fascinating place to visit, the story doesn't quite have the same heart. Stick it on a big screen, put on some headphones and you'll be blown away, but will you keep coming back? I'm not so sure.
In typical Telltale fashion, you’re delivered a fiendishly teasing twist at the end that already has me speculating about where the series can go in episode two. But the good thing is that this will not be a series where the crook just gets away at the last second. Rather than be a series where Batman always feels a step behind an ever-elusive bad guy, Telltale has instead opted to have new and intriguing foes to take on with each episode. A consistent political undercurrent tied to Bruce’s backstory, and how his parents weren’t all they seemed, adds further intrigue to the plot that I can’t wait to explore in episode two.
F1 2016 looks like it could be an instant classic. If Codemasters can nail the multiplayer portion, it has a very good chance of being the best entry in the series.
We’re not exactly short of Metroid clones these days, but Headlander rises above the herd through a mix of its ingenious body-swapping game mechanics and its bonkers '70s retro sci-fi vibe. It’s great-looking, absorbing and genuinely funny, managing to imbue its robot cast with a real sense of character. And if it has sequences where its ideas fail to click, these aren’t that numerous or annoying. While it’s not quite up there with Psychonauts, Headlander is still one of Double Fine’s finest.
