Faith in the Call of Duty franchise – Restored. I am very impressed with basically every element of the game (apart from a few minor gripes about framerate drops and spawn positioning). As someone that was expecting to strongly dislike this game, I am utterly relieved to say that I am very impressed with all game modes and look forward to losing hundreds of hours of productivity playing it. If you are new to the franchise this is a great place to start as there is a real return to form in WWII. Sledgehammer’s take on zombies is refreshing whilst staying true to the identity of the game mode, the campaign is compelling and visually spectacular, and the multiplayer is fast-paced boots on the ground fun.
What did I want from Forza Horizon 4? I wanted to jump in my car, join my friends seamlessly and tear up the road all day and night without getting bored. To be able to chill on my own, search for cars in barns, spend hours creating custom designs, and fine tune my vehicles. A map that would take me weeks to search every inch of, collect all the point boards and complete all the events and tasks. I wanted a game that promised substantial support and continued content. Did Forza Horizon 4 deliver on my expectations? Yes. I’m having a blast with friends, in some of the world’s finest automobiles, in picturesque Britain full of fields of autumn red leaves and spring fields of blossoms, crashing my way through most of the country-side. With Forza Horizon 4 you get what you would expect. It’s another Forza, there’s only so much variety you can get every year whilst still staying true to the core of what Horizon is about, however I have I am really enjoyed this year’s version of ‘the festival’.
Tyranny is the game that flips the moral compass of RPG's on its head, you are the bad guy - but how bad will you be? Tyranny is a fantastic isometric RPG from the masters at Obsidian, if only the creases were properly ironed out and they made a decision to go full voice-acting or none at all, this would have been a near perfect 10 across the board - that being said, this is a solid title that deserves your time and is definitely one that I will play again...and again...and again.
Wang is back and he is so hard! Shadow Warrior 2 is all about fun and if you think of a game that blends the newest incarnation of Doom with Postal 2 then you'll be in the ball-park of what this game is about.
Axiom Verge picks up the Metroid mantle and takes it in an entirely new direction while still retaining the best aspects of the classic from Nintendo. It's a wonderful adventure full of astonishing sights and sublime sounds, all created by a one man developer, Tom Happ. I'm very much looking forward to discovering his next project...if it's half as good as Axiom Verge, we are all in for a treat!
Another great series from a veteran player in the story-driven narratives, Telltale Games treated Batman with respect by presenting the duality Bruce Wayne/Batman in a way that I never experienced before. It is highly enjoyable, and I can't wait for the second episode
I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Middle-earth: Shadow of War. I'm a huge fan of the lore and world here, so that should come as no surprise. What ultimately clinches the deal however, is just how much fun this is to play. I'm utterly addicted to the Nemesis system and everything it churns out, not to mention taking part in epic sieges and open warfare. Yes, the soundtrack is honestly a letdown. On top of that, I'm wary of the very idea of lootboxes touching a singleplayer game, even one as content-packed as this. Not to mention, if you aren't enjoying everything the game has to offer, it might feel like a bit of a grind towards the end. Ultimately however, that doesn't take away too much from what Monolith Productions has accomplished here: An epic conclusion to the story that was started in Shadow of Mordor, a legitimately living world that reacts to player decisions or indecision, and a game set in Middle Earth that feels awesome to play.
Halo Wars 2 is certainly a worthy addition to the RTS genre and has raised the bar from its predecessor Halo Wars. The artistic style and cinematics complement each other nicely and are accompanied by a fantastic sound track.
Furi provides a greatly engaging, challenging, and unique gameplay experience along with a surprisingly deep below-the-surface campaign and a cast of intriguing characters. Although there are some technical shortcomings and certainly plenty of cheap insta-deaths, there's no denying that Furi provides a greatly difficult and stylized experience for those who seek it.
Darksiders is the same game it was back in 2010; a fantastic experience. The addition of enhanced visuals and a smoother frame rate only bolsters that fact. For new players, the Warmastered Edition is an enjoyable journey that encapsulates all the things that makes Darksiders great. For veterans of the series, saddle up Ruin and join War for another adventure. The apocalypse never looked so inviting!
Taking everything into perspective, I found Rain World to be an absolute gem. There's not much of an explicit story, yet the world is spelled out all around you with your experiences in this ecosystem personalizing each encounter. The difficulty can be a nice throwback however, the fact that your progress can be so easily lost is going to be a 'make or break' point for most gamers. If that's something you can't deal with, I strongly emphasize my caution to you to stay away. For those who do choose to press on, you're in for an incredible journey through a world that's truly unique every time through.
A great indie game, not long but good price for what it is. The art style is fantastic, and the sound design is brilliant, but gameplay can feel frustrating at times.
Fun from start to finish. Light-hearted humour with a grim twist that provides for hours upon hours of gaming enjoyment. Proclaimed by Zoink Games as their “Spiritual successor to our well-received game Stick it To The Man!”, Flipping Death shares a very similar art style, whilst taking a completely new gameplay direction. An adventure game based on platforming puzzle solving progression that will challenge you with every chapter you progress through whilst leaving you with a strong sense of accomplishment (or frustration depending on how quickly you figure out the games mechanics). At the time of this review no release date has been announced.
For folks that are looking for a taste of something new with a splash of that old school flavor Seraph will not disappoint.
Mass Effect: Andromeda is overall an enjoyable experience, with a stand out combat system and expansive worlds to explore. Where it lets itself down in character animations and dialogue, it makes up for it in the gripping storyline and customization options. I believe that the release time was essentially one of the biggest problems Andromeda has had to deal with regarding its acceptance, due to hitting the shelves after games that are contenders for Game of the Year such as: Horizon: Zero Dawn and Zelda: Breath of the Wild. After experiencing games that are almost graphically perfect and storylines that captive you from the word go, it can be quite easy to pick apart what is essentially a very good game, but hasn’t hit the mark quite as well as those released just before it. It is important to push through the first few hours of the game to really begin to experience everything that Andromeda has to offer, and it’s a lot. Fans of the franchise will most likely be as conflicted about their overall feelings as I am however, still be happy with the end result. Andromeda deserves it’s time in the spotlight, as the things that have not been done well are greatly outweighed by the things that have been done exceptionally well.
Metrico+ is a fascinatingly unique game that works so well. The little nuances and challenging puzzles make for a rewarding experience. Although there is more replay value through different challenges it does feel like it would have benefitted from little more length. Despite this small critique, Metrico+ is an intriguing, engaging and rewarding experience. Kudos to Digital Dreams.
Armello has many amazing qualities. It is certainly the most authentic take on digital tabletop gaming I have seen. While it could have benefited from the inclusion of a dedicated campaign, the lore and background infused into it's world make it a joy to play. Board game fans should beware - once Armello casts it's dice-dueling spell on you, going back to the tabletop will never be the same!
For Honor is a triumph in bringing a new action brawler to gamers. Ubisoft should be commended for their willingness to try out a new potential IP and succeeding in doing so. For Honor's gameplay mechanics work incredibly well and although easy to pick up, will take much more effort to master. Further to that, the endearing and moreish multiplayer is also a success, despite its rough edges. The story is endearing and fleshed out through a good use of collectibles. It is also an absolute pleasure to look at. To arms!!!
Song of the Deep is a must play game if you are a fan of the Metroidvania style of gameplay. It is a relaxing and fun experience and at only $15, it is a steal. The game has plenty of content and replayability by going back to collect everything you missed on the map. With the summer drought upon us, this is a good game to get invested in while we wait for this Fall's big AAA releases.
Valley ticks all the boxes - gorgeous visuals, soothing sounds and tight controls. A solid narrative is just the icing on the cake. Despite being low on the difficulty scale, Valley adds enough original features to make it a worthwhile addition to the collection of any budding archaeologists out there!
