Sequels typically improve on their predecessors and Nights of Azure 2 is no exception here. Some of the flaws from the original game are now fixed but at the expense of creating new problems along the way.

8 / 10 - Chaos;Child
Oct 21, 2017

Chaos;Child is not just a visual novel but a commentary on how technology has changed our lives. The game excels at story telling and presents a dynamic branching narrative offering sufficient replay value.

Shadow of War has taken the Nemesis system from the first game and attempted to expand it by adding allies into the mix. It creates an interesting dynamic that works really well with the combat of the game and even though the story is rather weak, the gameplay and the Nemesis system still offer a fun experience.

8.5 / 10.0 - The Evil Within 2
Oct 16, 2017

The Evil Within 2 can be genuinely terrifying at times. The game masterfully blends survival horror elements with plenty of action in between moments of silence. As a sequel, it is a bigger, better and ultimately more enjoyable experience.

7 / 10 - Pankapu

There is no doubt that Pankapu has a beautiful art style with a lot of attention given to the character animations, but unfortunately it also suffers with clunky controls and awkward difficulty spikes.

Bad Apple Wars can be classified as an interesting story experience with a lack of gameplay elements. The game offers a quirky cast of characters with a great art style to back them making it an ideal choice for those looking for their next visual novel in the Otome genre.

This game is strictly for the Neptunia fans although it carries some colorful visuals and a fun combat system. As the first game in the series to utilize Unreal Engine 4, it feels like a pretty solid effort from the developers.

8 / 10 - Gundam Versus
Oct 7, 2017

Gundam Versus offers a fun combat system and an abundance of mobile suits to fight with in the game. While the Arcade like experience might give it some longevity, it also makes it harder to recommend it for those who aren't really a fan of the series.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a highly fulfilling role-playing experience with rich worldbuilding, well-written characters, and intricate quest design. It is only marred somewhat by its battle system, which doesn't remain interesting for long and often becomes a chore.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie Video Game offers a refreshing combat system although held back by a restricted level design. When it comes to the Nintendo Switch version, it suffers from some annoying performance issues that might have an impact on the gameplay experience.

FIFA 18 offers a great story mode this year with the return of Alex Hunter, but when it comes to improvements to the general gameplay, there is not much to gain here.

9 / 10 - Cuphead
Sep 29, 2017

Cuphead will draw you in with its undeniable allure, but whether it will keep you hooked depends on your tolerance to the trial-and-error design philosophy. There's a cruel game hidden beneath the charming aesthetic, one that is equally rewarding upon triumph.

SteamWorld Dig 2 is full of colorful visuals and an excellent upgrade and progression system. It easily stands as one of the best sequel to an indie game released this year.

Blue Reflection doesn't offer much as an RPG but it does carry a certain charm. The gameplay loop can get repetitive while the customization and combat system are fairly simple. The art style might make it feel like a typical slice of life anime but the game attempts to target the magical girl genre with its gameplay.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 retains its crown of offering the best gameplay in a football game this year. The lack of new content is disappointing although the improvements to the gameplay somehow make up for it.

Hidden Dragon Legend starts off as a promising side-scrolling hack and slash and quickly devolves into a repetitive combat and inconsistent platforming mess. The game also suffers from a lack of polish especially for the story cutscenes where the visuals are widely inconsistent with stiff animations.
