FingerGuns's Reviews

What we have here is a very enjoyable fighter that's accessible for the noobiest of noobs so you can sit and just mess around with D-pad and pull off moves that you didn't think possible. Perfect for a quick half hour blast if you want to switch your brain off but still be entertained. On the flip side, if you're a veteran fighter there is plenty of deeper layers of combat that will keep you busy. It's a shame the chronicles mode is so boring as it would be nice to be introduced to the characters more. But the wealth of other modes more than makes up for this shortcoming. I came away from this game with both my thumbs cramping up. Not because of any tricky moves, but because I was playing for much longer than I realised. Time flies when you're having fun it seems. My only fear is that this game will be missed because how niche it is.

I don't think it's worth picking up yet. If you're the kind of person who isn't all that bothered about tech issues and will happily watch the game you paid £50 for get patched to high heaven than jump in. You'll find a multi-layered story with characters that are engaging and a world that's ripe for exploration where you get to make your own save points out of alcohol.

Overall the game is fun and doesn't take it's self too seriously, but provides a challenge that even older players would find difficult to beat regardless of their years of practice, leaving the to metaphorically kick the cat. This is one game that I won't paws to pick up again and it thoroughly deserves a cushion in front of the fire.

I don't think you even have to be a fan of the genre to really get to grips with The Darkside Detective. It does more or less everything very well, but it's definitely aimed at a niche audiences in terms of references and in-jokes. There could be an argument too that it doesn't quite hit the dizzy heights of Thimbleweed Park, but there's certainly nothing else on the system currently that is any closer to reaching that goal.

If word of mouth gets around and the online presence can build I think a few more people will be hopping on their bikes and trying to become the next Ryan Dungey (he is a good racer, Google told me so).

The Fall Part 2: Unbound tells an interesting and often complex tale of an artificial intelligence but it's often too obtuse with it's puzzle solutions.

After a small lull in the series with the third episode, What Ails You puts Batman: The Enemy Within back on track to be the most original and intriguing re-imaging of the Dark Knight's rogues gallery and among Telltale's very best output to date. If you're not playing this series, you're missing out on some fantastic gaming water cooler moments and some of the greatest character driven storytelling for years.

6 / 10 - Vesta
Jan 24, 2018

Vesta is an interesting and often tense puzzle game that lacks that final polish and tries to do too much. It feels like the game should have stuck to what it does well – the puzzle designs, the soundtrack and bold visual art style – instead of trying to include combat which results in the core mechanics being at odds with themselves. Vesta is at its best when it's challenging your grey matter rather than your thumb reaction speed and thankfully, it does that more often than not.

Hell Is Empty, the final episode of Life is Strange: Before the Storm, is action packed and tense but ends with a hollow, inconsequential decision.

7 / 10 - Dynasty Feud
Jan 10, 2018

Dynasty Feud is an ideal game to add to a party playlist among friends (who you wouldn't mind becoming enemies). It's a fast-paced, well designed, thrilling 2D platform brawler with a bold but basic art style and a catchy soundtrack in which anything can (and invariably will) happen. Matches can change in an instant because of the changeable nature of the characters, environments and abilities which lean into the unpredictable but can be mastered with practice. It's a shame that the online modes seem so unstable, even with a stable internet connection, but Dynasty Feud seems like a game best played together on the same TV (but always just out of arm's reach) anyway.

I do hope Epiphany Games work on making this version a little more polished or build a whole new Tiny Troopers experience for Switch because as I said at the top, there's a game and a half here waiting to be played on a platform that can lend itself well to this kind of game. Joint Ops XL isn't it, though. Not one bit.

6 / 10 - Factotum 90
Jan 2, 2018

Factotum 90 is a solid, if simple puzzle game that doesn't require too much from the player. If you want a test, you won't find one here because it fails to capitalise on the mechanics it has. It lacks polish but that premise and split-screen controls are interesting enough to get you through the games 30 missions before they overstay their welcome. Factotum 90 occupied me for a solid 6 hours and this feels like a solid return on investment for a budget handheld game.

5 / 10 - Let Them Come
Dec 14, 2017

This is really a game for those high score junkies. It's old-school in both looks and design and for a quick time waster works perfectly. If you're looking for something deeper, then this is not the game for you.

Human: Fall Flat is not going to change the world, but it's certainly a welcome distraction from it. Just make sure you have a second full controller set-up or it becomes a very lonesome experience.

It's nice to see jet ski racing making a return, but chances are you've probably played this already on literally any other format including mobile. The Switch version offers very little that is new to make you want to pick it up again if you have already sampled its watery delights (oo er), But considering the absurd value for money this game is (just £9.99), or if you haven't played it before then this is a fun solid racer, that's definitely worth picking up.
