9 / 10 - Golf Story
Oct 2, 2017

I'm struggling to find something I really didn't enjoy about Golf Story. It feels fantastic on my Switch and is the kind of game I could play for hours on a train journey (battery withstanding). I'm delighted it's as good as I was hoping it would be, it's probably exceeded my expectations.

Telltale's Batman: The Enemy Within continues with a fantastic second episode that's full of surprises and gets back to basics.

After a small lull in the series with the third episode, What Ails You puts Batman: The Enemy Within back on track to be the most original and intriguing re-imaging of the Dark Knight's rogues gallery and among Telltale's very best output to date. If you're not playing this series, you're missing out on some fantastic gaming water cooler moments and some of the greatest character driven storytelling for years.

Simply put. if you have PSVR then you need to have this game, if you don’t have a PSVR, then this maybe is the kick you need to buy one. Amazing.

9 / 10 - Rogue Aces
Apr 21, 2018

It’s a game that wears its heart on its sleeve and is full of fun and exciting gameplay, which in its more tricky areas requires your attention. It looks terrific and runs like a dream, you may expect it considering the 2D visuals but there are moments I felt like I was playing a cartoon and the grin wasn’t going away.

If there’s one type of game I never thought I’d be praising to the high heavens in 2018, it’s a 2D Metroidvania-esque puzzle pinball platformer featuring a Dung Beetle as its protagonist. Even those words written together make very little sense to me, and on paper Yoku’s Island Express should be an absolute trainwreck. Keeping as many genre balls the air as developer Villa Gorilla are doing here Yoku feels like somewhat of a herculean task, and yet here we are. Yoku’s Island Express is my favourite platformer of 2018 so far, and I’m not even sure it’s a platformer at all.

9 / 10 - F1 2018
Aug 25, 2018

F1 2018 then is another damn near spot on recreation of the worlds biggest motoring sport. It looks absolutely divine, is loaded with fan service and presented like a gift-wrapped set of car keys to a world that’s going to test your metal if you give yourself up to the absurdly detailed depth this game offers seasoned players. If you master F1 2018 and every single corner of its intricacies there’s every chance you could probably run your own F1 team in real life.

Strange Brigade is a formulaic action co-op that doesn’t break new ground as much as furrow a new groove in an already abundant genre. Does that make it boring though? No. Certainly not, and it’s actually quite brilliant. I haven’t really elaborated on the story, but not out of laziness or lack of understanding. There’s a dashing tale of adventure to be had, involving mummy queens and raided tombs. I just don’t want to spoil it for you. You may work out some tropes for yourself, especially if you’ve seen Brendan Fraser do his thing. It’s got some neat little jump scares in there, too.

9 / 10 - Wreckfest

Strong emphasis of racing/destruction, with a plethora of cars to tweak and modify to your heart’s content, the only gripes are down to musical preference and patience with loading times.

Expertly created puzzles, a setting which is as equally enticing as it is unsettling, a thought provoking narrative, excellent music and top draw voice work combine to form a truly enjoyable puzzle game that’ll have me leaving a very positive Trip Advisor review.

9 / 10 - Dead Cells

Balletic combat, beautiful visuals, a grim sense of humour to it, and the progressive upgrade system that encourages completion makes this a brilliant addition to a sub-genre that continues to grow from strength to strength. Highly recommend.

9 / 10 - Semblance
Jul 23, 2018

Semblance is yet another Switch title that’s easy to recommend. The excellent level design, the ‘platformer-is-a-mechanic’ headline lives up to its promise and then some, with a wondrous visual style and a heartbeat throughout which pumps the blood of a revitalised genre through every vein of its code.

9 / 10 - Guacamelee! 2
Aug 20, 2018

There’s an absolutely brilliant side quest that’s so tongue in cheek, it’s in danger of bursting through it. It’s hilarious in its deadpan, fourth wall breaking delivery that makes up for its usage of the word “dank”. I won’t spoil anymore, but it’s a testament to Drinkbox that they can take this all in stride and poke fun at themselves, the fans, the toxic community and the power of internet opinions and leave the player grinning throughout.

9 / 10 - The Messenger
Mar 25, 2019

After several hours of dying and dying again the game gives you reason to think it’s all over before it just isn’t, and this could throw some people off. It certainly did me, whilst it’s no bother at all to keep playing The Messenger the pacing felt a little strange in the closing moments, and there’s a fair amount of backtracking to be getting on with. Fortunately this allows you to head back to old levels that have a 16-bit remix that you wouldn’t have seen before, which makes it worthwhile all the more.
