So here I am, gushing over a nostalgia filled love letter to classic JRPG’s when all you really wanted to know was: Is it any good? Well that depends on you as a person really, Lost Sphear is one of those game’s I have found really difficult to score. For old school fans of the genre I would say that Lost Sphear is an absolute must play however as a game on it’s own merits it relies a little too heavily on nostalgia to really come out on it’s own.
So, what’s my final verdict on Monster Hunter: World? All in all, Monster Hunter: World is a beautiful, terrifyingly primal experience that sits among the best… Whilst also being somewhat of a regression for this beloved franchise – Beginners are both wholeheartedly accepted, yet left adrift by a lack of guidance or assistance, and the smaller pool of monsters leaves a lot of room to be filled (Possibly through DLC or expansions); Monster Hunter: World throws players, new and old, into a brand new world, with brand new experiences lying in wait around every corner… It just needed that little bit more polish to make the deal even sweeter.
Overall this game is everything i wanted from my headset: magic, dragons and sword swinging fun. I am enjoying it so much that I am not noticing it’s minimal flaws. The idea of a 100 hour RPG in VR was slightly daunting but now it’s all i want to play. I think to be able to revamp an old, over played RPG in this way is a massive achievement and I think this will add a lot of value to my PSVR headset.
The game ranges from 2.5 – 6 hours, depending on if you’re looking to find all of the secrets and collectibles which are on offer. While it is relatively short offering, the game is fun to play as all of the mechanics just work in VR. If you’re looking for VR title to jump into that is oozing with quality and isn’t watered down then DOOM VFR is going to meet your expectations. It’s worth mentioning that this is my first DOOM title which I’ve experienced and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time, so don’t be put off and dive straight in.
If I had to describe Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in a nutshell, it would be "A flawed diamond", beautiful by nature and at it's core, but extremely flawed on the offset, which makes criticizing this title all the more painful; I want the Xenoblade franchise to succeed and improve, and to swell into a beautiful, wonderful franchise, however after seeing the top-notch Xenoblade Chronicles and well-performing spin-off that was Xenoblade Chronicles X, I feel that Xenoblade Chronicles 2, as a sequel to Xenoblade Chronicles and on it's own merit just gets outshone by it's precursors. I would definitely recommend this title on the Nintendo Switch – It'll certainly keep you busy, but wether you'll enjoy every last second of it is a totally different, and personal story.
Star Ocean 4: The Last Hope is a slow-burn JRPG that you play when you have a spare hour or two, and nothing else major to do – Just to sit down in the Captain’s chair and blast away to other worlds. Is it as action-packed as other JRPGs, such as Final Fantasy XV or some of the Tales games? No. But that’s not a bad thing by nature… The 4K remaster does a great job of bringing this game up to modern standards, and brings a level of options tweaking that I can only hope will become industry-standard.
Despite the microtransactions, the game is still a lot of fun, the driving is nice and easy to lose yourself in, especially with the varying environments and the open world challenges. Pushing yourself to get those 3 star ratings can be extremely fun, and the story is engaging and looks amazing all the while. I would love to be able to shout at you, screaming, “GO GET THIS GAME”! But it’s just not good enough for that; while I do recommend the game. I can’t say that its worth £50.
Etrian Odyssey V: Beyond the Myth wants to kick your arse. It wants to beat you down. It wants to be ruthless. However that feeling when you finally nail that strategy; when you overcome a floor that was kicking you down for weeks; when you beat that FOE or that boss that stopped you dead in your tracks… …Well, there’s no better feeling, really.
When I break down Oh My Godheads! to its core components, there’s not really much to talk about. That doesn’t mean the game is bad by any merit, but rather that it’s rather… simple in nature? It fits right at home with traditional party minigames such as those featured in the Mario Party franchise, however as a standalone game there’s just not much here unless you’re totally engrossed with the gameplay – especially considering an asking price of £11 currently on Steam, and a suggested price increase upon the game’s final release, I can’t honestly say for certain that Godheads! is worth the asking price based on the content on offer in the current build of the game. I like the gameplay in Godheads!; I like the level variety and Godhead variety; I even like the soundtrack! However the slippery and somewhat limiting controls, minor bugs and current price for minimal content holds back what could be another great addition to the party game scene.
There is a lot to love in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy which scratches the Uncharted itch in a really nice way whilst giving hope that a new direction for Uncharted would be very welcome – my only issues as a whole is that there is just not enough added to the game for it to be a perfect 10/10
You have a uninspired campaign that boils down to a predictable and boring waste of 5 hours. A multiplayer mode that feels too arcade based to last longer than a 1 hour sitting. Then you have the loot box system locking players out of the classes they want to play and encouraging the customer to spend money so that they can feel “a sense of pride and accomplishment” If you came here wanting an exciting Star Wars story then get out because this game is not worth the money. Instead of spending a one time payment for a game you are expected to put down more as you keep playing.
.hack://gu is a great JRPG series with a lot to love for any fan of the genre, whilst the game does fit in after the original .hack series, it is not a necessity for one to have played all four of the original games but it certainly helps… If you can afford it. WHY Bamco decided to do these 4 as the first bunch of remasters is beyond me because it would have made a lot more sense to do the far superior games first helping people to get more out of “The World”.
All in all I would say WWII is a pretty good addition to the CoD series, it’s not as good as Black Ops 3’s multiplayer but it makes up for it with one crazy fun Zombies map. I just pray this game doesn’t meet the same fate as previous games and it stays fair and fun until the next instalment.
I had never played a Demon Gaze game before and totally didn’t know what to expect when I put the game on; I didn’t even know that it’s essentially a 2D dungeon crawling JRPG focused around strategy fighting and turn based combat! I’ve come out of the game pleasantly surprised and it will definitely be something I’ll play to the end, mainly when I’ve got nothing else to play.
Not only do I recommend Odyssey as a game, but I strongly advise anyone craving those Sunshine adventures from the GameCube pick this up immediately. With games like Breath of the Wild, Stardew Valley and Mario Kart also out on the Switch there’s a lot of good reasons to pick up this still relatively new console. If you already own a Switch and you’re not sure about this game then I implore you give it a go. There’s something for everyone weather you’ve never played a Mario game before or you’re a master N64 speed runner. However if you have ever played a Mario game then you will appreciate this present that Nintendo has spent painful hours crafting for your enjoyment
I wish there was at least something here for me because then I could give it some praise. I know for a fact that there are people out there who enjoy this game and games like this - more power to you all and I’m sure this game must improve upon a lot of things but since this is my first simulator game ever I just found it to be a real stinker.
To me, Wolfenstein 2 had a hell of a lot to live up to following my experiences with The New Order and The Old Blood and to me this perfectly delivers on all fronts. Wolfenstein 2 has an even better storyline backed up by absolutely perfect gameplay and fantastic sound design. The game never outstays its welcome and the only thing that I feel that could possibly have let it down is that I NEEDED more after my 11 hour playthrough.
Origins feels more like an RPG set in the Egyptian times, which is as good as it sounds.
So in conclusion, should you get this game. Probably not. Here’s why. The physical copy for Xbox One and PS4 is priced at around £30 and £25 on steam. I just don’t feel that this game is worth that price. The majority of the game comes from its predecessor, Spintires, and the only new content is a new map and 9 challenges that take less than half an hour to complete. Even if the game had been built from scratch I wouldn’t recommend this game as it doesn’t feel polished enough for a game studio, maybe a solo indie developer but not a studio. If you happen to be one of those people who own the original game on steam, you can get the game at half price but I still wouldn’t say go out and buy it right now as it’s still a push to charge that much to me for this game.
The main opinion I've formed about this game is that it succeeds as a horror game. And I honestly think that this has been the scariest game I've played all year (the others being Resident Evil 7, The Evil Within 2 and White Day). It mostly has to do with the designs of the enemies and clever ways the game leads you in and gets you with something completely unexpected. It’s only about 5 hours long but it’s definitely a densely packed experience. To sum it up, Yomawari: Midnight Shadows is a really good, scary, short experience with only a little bit of jankiness and a few things it can work on to be better. But even as it is, it’s just a really good time, another great game for some good ol' Halloween fun.
