7 / 10.0 - Dragon Lapis
Jun 28, 2018

With its speedy gameplay, colorful 8-bit graphics and chiptune music from composer Ryuji Sasai, Dragon Lapis perfectly fits into its niche. It's not meant to be a title that'll take over your summer, but is instead great to play on car trips or when your Switch is being used by another family member. You're not likely to enjoy it if you're not already a fan of JRPGs, but those within its target audience will find it a pleasant adventure to take…even it feels like one you've taken multiple times before.

7.5 / 10.0 - Happy Birthdays
Jun 27, 2018

Happy Birthdays won't appeal to people looking for a linear story, but has endless possibilities to create, explore and experiment with worlds of entirely your own creation.

If you're looking to take a break from story-based, action-packed games, or just want to challenge your brain in a fun way, then Block-a-Pix Color could be just what you're looking for.

7.5 / 10.0 - Pirate Pop Plus
Jun 20, 2018

Pang fans will feel very at home with Pirate Pop which is a charming homage to the Buster Bros. of old. There aren't many frills here, but in some cases, it's what makes the game sing. As far as pick-up-and-play action-puzzlers on the Nintendo Switch eShop are concerned, Pirate Pop Plus is a total treasure.

7 / 10.0 - Runner3
Jun 19, 2018

Runner3 is a game that, in many ways, has taken one step forward while taking two back. One of its biggest alterations was an area that needed none, difficulty. Many of its newer additions have left me feeling rather indifferent. Still, I commend Choice Provisions for not resting on their laurels. Runner3 is still entertaining with its brand of frustrating (at times discouraging) fun. It'll keep me playing to improve my stats and unlock more goodies. Still, I do recommend playing the prior games first, if you haven't already. Get a feel for them, and you might be tempted to grab the cool physical edition from Nicalis with neat extras.

Johnny Turbo's: Super Burger Time is a great on the go arcade game, and the ability to play with friends is a nice addition. I only wish there were a few more levels. But overall, if you're a fan of arcade games, or hamburgers I definitely recommend checking it out!

The controls feel right, the challenge is satisfying, the presentation is nostalgic, and there are numerous reasons to keep returning to it.

8.5 / 10.0 - Just Shapes & Beats
Jun 15, 2018

Just Shapes & Beats is a unique combination of rhythm and arcade games that's fun and accessible. There's a lot of visual and audio stimulation, but it works well and makes for a fun party game.

Jumping Joe & Friends is well developed and fun, but by its very nature is not the type of game you'll play with any degree of frequency. It's more like those board games you find stashed away on the upper shelf of the closet and think, “Hey, I remember this! This was fun!” But then you get it down and play a few rounds and soon remember why it had been up on that shelf for so long.

The unique action and dark story of Fallen Legion: Rise to Glory never quite come together in a way that justifies the game's $40.00 asking price. You can overcome the initial frustration with the inadequately explained combat controls, but getting past the game's repetitive nature will be a much tougher task.

8 / 10.0 - Ikaruga
Jun 11, 2018

Overall, Ikaruga is a great shooter but not quite what I was expecting. The length of the game combined with the difficulty may deter most people but the game is customizable enough to be fun for anyone. The game even features a couple 2-player options so you can invite a friend along for the ride. If you're a fan of shooter games, Ikaruga is definitely worth checking out. From the combo system, to the light/dark switching, it offers some unique gameplay elements even for genre veterans. Just be ready for a healthy challenge!

Overall, Aqua Moto Racing Utopia is your average, forgettable racing game, other than the fact that water racing games aren't all that common among the racing genre. Nothing, in particular, makes it stand out from the crowd.

Aqua Moto Racing Utopia's combination of abusive obstacles and physics within its gameplay along with a drab visual presentation will certainly make you long for a proper Wave Race-like challenge.

Doctor Dekker offers a lot of content, built in a way that allows you to piece an intense mystery together on your own, but with some clunky bits that let the whole game down.

Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers has turned into a nice eShop surprise. Why Nintendo isn't releasing this full priced game as a physical copy (in North America anyway) is a mystery. In fact, I'd like to see the entire trilogy compiled for a 3DS physical release or reworked for the Switch. Either way, Dillon's Dead-Heat Breakers is a game I can put in a good word for.

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is a delight to play. I recommend the game especially for couples. Katelyn and I have had a blast playing through the game for the second time on the Switch (we first played through on the Wii U four years ago). If you're looking for a well-polished, incredibly fun game with some couch co-op to boot, you need to pick up Tropical Freeze on the Switch. I can't think of a thing I would change about the game–it's simply a masterpiece.

8.5 / 10.0 - Detective Pikachu
Jun 6, 2018

Fans of story-driven games or fans of the Pokémon series, in general, will enjoy Detective Pikachu. It's a fun adventure filled with some great Pokémon and interesting cases to solve. The thing I really loved about it was how they incorporated them into various jobs in each of the game's environments. They really made it feel like this world relied on the Pokémon and the humans coexisted with them in a meaningful way. I hope to see more of those types of details in future games. If you like mystery games and Pokémon, you'll be in for a treat with Detective Pikachu.
