Stray Blade has so much potential to be amazing, but sadly, it falls quite far behind and might follow in the same footsteps as Shock Tactics. The story in Stray Blade might be its saving grace, but without optimization and possibly some work on the combat system, it might not be enough to help the game rise to the top. However, if you can look past the issues or possibly fix/reduce them, this game is an absolute joy to play, and the story of Acrea, along with the stories between Farren and Boji, will keep you coming back for more on their wild adventure.
The inclusion of more content that encourages a sense of exploration would've been a plus in that context. In contrast, fans of the Star Wars series won't surely be bothered with these matters and will be rewarded with a fantastic journey full of events, exploration, and interesting characters. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor may have pared down to some fundamentals, yet it continues to deliver on the promise of a solid Star Wars action role-playing game.
Showgunners is a good example of turn-based combat set within a dystopian world that will take you, on average, somewhere in the realm of 15-18 hours to complete the full game. This isn’t a bad duration, but for those who want a more procedurally generated experience with a lot of replayability, this may not be the game for you. For everyone else, it’s a fun ride with a grisly world and an enjoyable if fairly standard combat system.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox's beautiful visuals will keep you hooked from the get-go. The mechanics are simple enough that even novice players won't have trouble getting the hang of the game. Both the story and the level of challenge are excellent, preventing the game from ever seeming stale. Anyone who enjoys platformers should give The Last Case of Benedict Fox one a try. It is a fantastic showcase of what can be done in the platforming genre, with stunning visuals, engaging gameplay, and a memorable cast of characters.
Bramble: The Mountain King has so much to offer. It’s almost a miracle that everything fits into just one game, with its incredibly rich story, diverse world, and the many twists you’ll encounter. This game has proven to be a masterpiece that isn’t just played, it is experienced and can appeal to anybody who wants a great story… And possibly a look at some of the more bizarre creatures from Nordic and Scandinavian folklore.
Sunrise GP would simply be better if it had about another six months of development time, however, that doesn’t prevent it from being an overall dull experience. A lack of track variety is a large factor in this but isn’t the only problem. The lack of a spin on typical racing is another big flaw. It is so simple to picture Sunrise GP with an over-the-top drift and ramps or shortcuts because of its visual style but lacks anything of the sort.
Homestead Arcana is the next big step for Serenity Forge with a masterpiece of a game. From the well thought out sights, plant life, and even the occasional hostile animal to the incredible storytelling. You'll find yourself losing more time than any game should let you, but you won't regret a single second of it when you're out exploring and learning more about what happened before the Miasma took over.
Strayed Lights is a fantastic game that deserves a whole lot of love, and the positives of the experience massively outweigh the negatives. It isn’t all that long at about 5-6 hours, but it’s exactly as long as it needs to be. So, check out Strayed Lights if you want a not-too-tough soulslike game that also happens to do a few new things along the way.
Labyrinth of Zangetsu is a beautifully designed game with so much old Eastern cultural inspiration. While the combat system can be a bit unbalanced, it’s still a joy to play.
The King of Fighters XV is a satisfying experience. Changes like making EX moves available without activating Max mode, slowing down the maximum possible attack speed, and improving the responsiveness of the controls make this my favorite The King of Fighters game to date. The ability to access and use music from previous King of Fighters and other SNK games is a fantastic bonus. It's promising, and SNK should expand upon it in the future rather than see it as a standalone effort.
GUN JAM had so much potential to be great, but it’s just missing so much extra detail. The game is interesting and a joy to play at first but it loses that luster very quickly once you realize there isn’t much else to the game. With the lack of enemy variety, character background, or more stages to explore and destroy enemies in, GUN JAM needs a lot more work that we might see in the future.
Mr. Sun's Hatbox is an action platformer with some simple base-building mechanics and a ton of humorous moments throughout its gameplay. If you want a game with some fun enough mechanics that are also full of silly moments, then Mr. Sun's Hatbox is for you. However, if you get a bit annoyed by repetitious humor, then it may not be for you.
Deceive Inc. is a joy of a game to play and is definitely something that will keep you coming back for more and more. While it does subvert from the typical FPS formula of bust in guns blazing. Deceive Inc. is a game that makes you think about your actions and what you do and forces players to think creatively but still not get caught. This game is definitely not for someone who was looking for a simple Overwatch clone, but it is for someone who wants something different and definitely something cheesy.
While Sherlock Holmes The Awakened has an incredibly rich story to experience, it feels like you have to work much harder than normal to get to it. The overall gameplay is incredibly smooth and the mechanics balance each other out quite well, but a form of hint is desperately needed for a game like this.
Life of Delta is a short and simple puzzle game but it is one fantastic experience. The game is packed with charming characters that feel unique from each other and lets you experience a story that is heartwarming and impactful, wrapped up neatly into a five hour long package. While this was most likely done to stop the game from dragging on, this does, however, leave you wanting more.
While EA SPORTS PGA TOUR isn't for everyone and can be tedious at times, it has plenty to offer golf fans thanks to its extensive course library, rewarding career mode, and user-friendly controls. The long hiatus seems to have served well; it has returned with the same high-quality simulation for which it is known and a renewed emphasis on satisfying fans' desires. With this structure, EA Sports will only move the franchise in a positive direction, and unless they really want to, it's impossible to falter from here.
EVERSPACE 2 had a bit of a rocky start just like its predecessor, but can still receive a standing ovation. With an incredible story, brilliant visuals and sound design, this game is very close to being a masterpiece. The only letdown is that travel in general seems slow for a game that’s supposed to be fast-paced, only time will tell if that changes or stays the same.
Ravenbound is a highly ambiguous game that fully allows players to explore its vast ever-changing landscape. Despite its ambition, the game lacks refinement and makes the game feel underbaked and not fully developed. The game has had a lot of passion put into it. This is incredibly evident in the game's soundtrack, which is tribal and ambient and takes heavy inspiration from traditional Slavic folk music, the layered vocalizations and echoing drums just entirely immerse you into the world of Ravenbound.
While Metal: Hellsinger might be a rhythm-based game, it will be fast-paced but not to the point where you’d have to be a professional to play. Players of any skill can indulge in this game and experience the rich story, gameplay, and epic music in Metal: Hellsinger. The Outsiders might have had a rocky start but their first release wasn’t as rocky, and instead left us thrashing to the beat as we thrashed hordes of demons without having to worry about any bugs that could ruin the gameplay.
DREDGE can come off as a bit underwhelming if you’ve never played it. The same can be said for most games with a Lovecraftian theme. It’s the type of game where you have to dive into the deep end and see for yourself just how much this game has to offer. The story might be a bit vague to follow unless you go out of your way to find everybody and see what they have to say, but this is well worth it.
