It’s not very often a video game captures the imagination of everyone in my household. We are a massive board gaming family so that may have helped somewhat, giving the themes of this interesting little Nintendo Switch title. Dicey Dungeons, as the title suggests combines two of the greatest things in gaming; dice and yes you guessed it, dungeons. It feels like someone has definitely been peeking at my Christmas list. With a lot of dice and random dungeons, count me in!
Fort Triumph is a turn-based tactics game inspired by XCOM. With a unique mechanic that allows the environment to be used as a weapon, is CookieByte Entertainment’s game a triumph? Find out in this Rapid Review.
Nintendo seems to be going down a fitness route at the moment. With Ring Fit Adventure, the original Fitness Boxing and that free Jump Rope game, the Nintendo Switch seems to be the best choice for those looking to get fit. With Ring Fit Adventure currently the fitness game to beat, Nintendo has added to this pedigree with Fitness Boxing 2: Rhythm & Exercise.
Need for Speed Hot Pursuit originally released a decade ago. This refresh from Stellar Entertainment Software offers classic Need for Speed racing but is this remaster left in the dirt? Drive up to the starting line, start your engines and find out in this Rapid Review.
When the Past was Around conveys a whirlwind of emotions through its combination of award-winning violin music and hand-drawn art. It’s a compelling journey into the thoughts of Eda, the main character, as she processes a devastating personal loss. There’s no doubt that I found this game to be a delight, but is it the game for you? Let’s take a look at what it has to offer.
Nova-Box continues to port their excellent visual novels to the Nintendo Switch and this is the case with Along The Edge, an enchanting story of family rivalries with a slight dusting of the Occult.
Empire of Sin was first introduced at E3 2019 as a 1920s Chicago based strategy role playing game. You can choose any of the 14 mob bosses and build your empire. Among the bosses are some real historical villains like Al Capone and a few unique characters created just for this game.
The campaign starts as any Call of Duty game does, well and truly in the thick of it. You’re hunting Perseus, a Soviet spy whose goal is to subvert global power from the United States and shift the balance towards the Soviet Union. This run of missions sees you travel to East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey and Soviet KGB Headquarters itself.
When the sound of an intruder interrupts her birthday cake, Clea and her brother Ed head out into the quiet halls of the mansion in search of their parents. However, something sinister has its eyes on Clea, and she may prove to be her own worst enemy.
It has been mentioned on this site that soulslike games come a dime a dozen nowadays. Every developer wants to capitalize on the success of the genre by creating their own take on the intense and extremely difficult style of role-playing game. Chronos: Before the Ashes is yet another one of those soulslike games, but with a developer like Gunfire Games (responsible for some of the Darksiders entries) and a publisher like THQ Nordic, Chronos comes packed with a lot of promise to be something spectacular.
Adventure game Jenny LeClue – Detectivu was successfully funded via crowdfunding in 2014. The campaign was managed on Kickstarter with an original goal of $65,000. By the end of the campaign, developer – Mografi had raised a staggering $105,797, and so Jenny LeClue was born.
The Remothered series has had quite a troubled and complex history. What started as a 2-D homage to the Clock Tower games was soon scrapped and re-imagined into a more cinematic survival-horror experience. The first title in this new series; Remothered: Tormented Fathers, was a sleeper hit amongst horror fans. Praised for its storytelling and scary atmosphere, it was pretty certain that a sequel would be on the cards.
Halloween may have come and gone, but whatever the time of year, there’s always space for more monsters. In Vera Blanc: Full Moon, it’s up to you to investigate a series of murders that locals believe were carried out by a werewolf!
Maid of Sker follows Thomas Evans as he travels to Sker Island to rescue his lover Elisabeth from her controlling father, who has locked her away in their family hotel. On arrival, it soon becomes clear that something has gone horribly wrong…
The Drawn to Life games stand out for me when I think of my time with the original Nintendo DS. The first title, originally developed by 5th Cell, came out in 2007 whilst its sequel, The Next Chapter, released in 2009. There was even a spin-off in 2008, Drawn to Life: Spongebob Squarepants Edition! A criminally underrated series, you are the Creator, looked up to by a species named the Raposa. Using the DS touch screen and your stylus to draw, you could create your own hero and items such as platforms and signs within the game. As someone who has always loved drawing, it was innovative to see my creations come to life in game!
On the surface, Horace may seem like just another 2D platformer on the Nintendo eShop. It’s hard to summarise the entire story, so the description of a robot trying to reunite with his family while picking up rubbish left over from the Robot War doesn’t particularly stand out. I’ve played many whacky indie games in my time at Rapid Reviews, with weird and wonderful stories, and initially Horace doesn’t sound too different.
The story in Lost Ember is one about a lone wolf and a curious spirit trying to remember what they have forgotten about their past lives in a journey across a beautiful world where past stories are re-told and truths are revealed.
When Rie, a cynical and insular 9-year-old, finds Licia, a young demon from Hell, stealing cookies in her kitchen, her life undergoes a sudden and dramatic change. Just how things develop is up to you in Strawberry Vinegar, a slice-of-life (and cake) visual novel.
Hands up if you’ve heard of a Phog? Anyone? Nope. Me neither. Allow me to introduce you to Red and Blue, the two (or should I say one…) stars of this puzzle adventure title from Bit Loom Games. You’ll be making your way through three distinctive worlds; each one VERY different than the last and trying to navigate your way through this charming and downright silly platformer. The main hook is that the aptly named “Phogs” are a pair of dogs with a twist; they share the same body!
Last year Capcom brought the next instalment of its DMC series; Devil May Cry 5 to the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. The fast-paced hack & slash was a big success and brought Devil May Cry back into the limelight. Building on this success Capcom has re-released Devil May Cry 5 as; Devil May Cry 5: Special Editon which is naturally targeted towards the current generation of consoles – Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.
