Samurai Maiden is a really fun girls sword-fighting action game that focuses more on characters and combat than a strong narrative experience. The fully voiced dialogue, frantic combat, and endearing cast of characters make for a solid action game experience from D3 Publisher and SHADE. Nintendo Switch performance is lacking with its frame rate stutters and dips, however.
Although Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have some, if not all, noticeable issues, it still manages to offer one of the best Pokémon experiences to date. Its deviation from its traditional roots has made the game even more enjoyable, offering a plethora of gameplay and a good amount of content. Both veteran and fresh fans of the game will love this game and it should be recommended to anyone who wants to try Scarlet and Violet.
The PS2 series has returned with modernized controls, but old problems. Simple but satisfying gunplay wrapped in a stylish package is marred by a padded runtime, uneven presentation, and poorly done localization. Gungrave G.O.R.E's promising start transforms into a slog to its finish through bullet sponges, bad encounter design, and worse platforming.
God of War Ragnarok makes use of cinematic techniques and skilled actors to tell its story of holding on and letting go. But it doesn't feel beholden to cinematic trappings. It's proud of its history and medium and plays sublimely as a result. With a focus on fun and flow, God of War Ragnarok's bloody and beautiful pieces fit together swimmingly.
Sonic Frontiers has some noticeable issues, but it still manages to be the best 3D Sonic entry in years despite this. Players can expect a fresh new take on the franchise featuring plenty of gameplay variety and a somewhat intriguing story. Series fans will love this game and it should be recommended to anyone who is looking for an atmospheric action platformer.
With its fantastic gunplay, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II feels like a perfect platform for the franchise's next two years. An extremely enjoyable campaign and loads of multiplayer experiences are available for players to enjoy, leading endless hours of entertainment. Although the various technical bugs and missing components such as player stats do take away from the experience, Modern Warfare II is one of the better Call of Duty titles we have seen for quite some time.
Persona 5 Royal is a wonderful experience on Nintendo Switch with its beautiful visuals and fun turn-based combat holding up quite well. Players can experience a captivating story on the go or at home with tons of new features unavailable in the original Persona 5. This is a must-buy for RPG fans who have yet to experience the tale of the Phantom Thieves or for those who want to relive the journey on a portable device.
The Chaos;Head Noah / Chaos;Child Double Pack provides many hours of thrilling stories and unnerving twists. Although the English release of Chaos;Head Noah is not ideal, it's worth experiencing for fans of visual novels such as Steins;Gate. Chaos;Child is another great entry for the Switch and a worthy sequel with investigation elements. The games would greatly benefit from patches and fixes.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is another excellent Trails JRPG with a memorable cast of characters and an engaging narrative. The game stays true to the identity of the Trails series while foreshadowing implications for subsequent games. A strong and well-rounded JRPG awaits in Crossbell following the success of the Trails in the Sky trilogy.
Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling Into Darkness faithfully adapts the Made in Abyss series into a challenging survival RPG with an original story. However, some performance issues and uninspired game design hold back its potential to be a truly great title.
Dusk Diver 2 greatly improves upon the foundation of the original game and creates an enticing gameplay loop with stylish visuals. The game's main scenario is a compelling step above its predecessor to complete a great, well-rounded sequel.
Soul Hackers 2 modernizes the Devil Summoner formula while retaining the unique cyberpunk aesthetic of Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers. Ringo charges into the Devil Summoner underworld with an interesting narrative and signature Megami Tensei series combat. Soul Hackers 2 is worthwhile experience for JRPG fans wanting another great ATLUS adventure.
River City Saga: Three Kingdoms is an addictive and rewarding experience. A few quality of life adjustments can make this game even better throughout multiple playthroughs. It's not a perfect beat 'em up, but it's a worthy entry in the River City series.
Ground Divers! mashes elements of classic games such as Dig-Dug with roguelikes, a genre popular with modern day gaming. The gameplay is defined by it's fast-paced, replayable nature and infusion of RPG elements. The game's colorful presentation radiates very feel-good vibes for an experience worth playing through on Switch.
DNF Duel is a fighting game that successfully returns to the roots of the genre while being accessible to new players. Although some features are not present, the future of the game could evolve with DLC and updates. At launch, a well-rounded fighting game is available with unlockable characters and a plethora of content.
AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative is an immersive mystery-adventure that never ceased to surprise. A well-executed mystery, a host of laughter-inducing moments, and a memorable cast of characters make this game a must-buy for fans of the genre. It's strongly recommended to play the original game, AI: The Somnium Files.
Gran Turismo 7 is a masterful evolution of the series that pushes gameplay and content offering into a true next-gen package. There are a few online issues to iron out that keep it from being a racing masterpiece. Gran Turismo is finally back!
Monark delivers a refreshing JRPG approach with a mystery filled narrative and great turn-based strategy gameplay. A fulfilling experience that stands out from many JRPGs in the past few years. For those coming from The Caligula Effect 2, Monark is worth taking a look at!
25 hours and a platinum trophy later, Neptunia x Senran Kagura: Ninja Wars was a really fun game from start to finish. As a fan, I hope to see more of Senran Kagura in the future and would like to see both franchises collaborate again. The game’s combat kept me going through those Yomi Training challenges and the story was a blast. The side content is something that might not satisfy players who are eager for side-quests in a traditional RPG. Anyone remotely interested in Ninja Wars should at least check out what Neptunia and Senran Kagura are all about in their respective games. At the end of the game, I definitely wanted more to play through and I think those who pick this game up will feel that same way. There’s a lot of potential for a sequel with room for an even better game, a bigger ninja war!
The Caligula Effect 2 improves combat, delivers an engaging story and adds a level of polish that the original game couldn't afford. From engaging characters to the wicked tunes of the Musicians, the game delivers a great JRPG experience from start to finish. This game lays the groundwork for an exciting future of FuRyu and Historia developed RPGs going forward!
