Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is a great action RPG that doesn't overstay its welcome with its story and content, but offers enough replay value for fans. The game's main flaws involve the lack of side content and character development due to the short story, but the fun combat, intriguing setting, and variety of features makes it a worthy Ys title nonetheless.
Marvel Rivals is one of the best multiplayer games I've played in a really long time. Thanks to varied and unique characters from one of the most beloved franchises in history, the roster is fantastic so far and filled with potential. Further, the moment-to-moment gameplay and unique approach to balance is a great change of place compared to other hero shooters. Hopefully the game manages to build on its momentum in the coming months.
Metaphor: ReFantazio is a masterful RPG that defies expectations, and it's the pinnacle of its genre. Players are plunged into an amazing and complex fantasy setting as a protagonist setting out to right the wrongs of its kingdom: the United Kingdom of Euchronia. Along the way, players meet several well-written characters, including a tremendous threat of a villain. ATLUS refined and perfected the calendar and turn-based battle systems to create an all-time classic. This is absolute brilliance.
Epic Mickey: Rebrushed is a fantastic remaster that manages to resurrect a cult classic in a way that is respectful of the source material while updating it for modern audiences. The story is still great even after fourteen years. Plus, the visuals and gameplay have been tuned to near-perfection. While you can't help but wish for more additions to the story and world, the quality-of-life changes to gameplay and replayability make this the perfect way to play this underrated platformer.
The RIKI 8bit GAME Collection is a fine collection of homebrew titles that will make anyone nostalgic. Packed with two games that feel out the arcade, and a trilogy of albums any fan of chiptune will enjoy. The package may feel lacking for some, and it does feel like an enthusiast product, but there is still something here for any fan of retro games.
Fairy Tail 2 is a compelling action RPG that provides fans with the super-anticipated Alvarez arc. However, its efforts to make itself as accessible end up missing the landing, resulting in a rather unpolished experience that makes it hard to justify the cost.
While Among Ashes has a great premise and takes advantage of it through interesting gameplay choices, the bland story, excessive puzzles, and numerous glitches make for a flawed experience that I wouldn’t recommend spending money on until some of the issues are fixed.
Antonblast is an incredibly fun time. The premise is unique, the gameplay is incredibly addicting, and the visuals are beautiful. Further, the inspirations that led to its creation are honored respectfully and are used, not to create a cheap nostalgic response, but to create an experience fun for all players. While the game has some bugs, difficulty spikes, and control issues, I highly recommend it, regardless of whether or not you're a fan of the genre.
The Matchless Kungfu is an incredibly ambitious sandbox from HuanMos Game. The game says build your story and give you every opportunity too. You can play the game anyway you want and still have a great time. Problems come up when you encounter bugs or localization issues. The game also tries to do a lot and not all the systems work. It excels in a lot but also misses the mark in just as much. The game still needs work but with constant updates and a roadmap planned, I am optimistic for the future.
While Threshold doesn't do too much to justify its short runtime, has a misleading genre label, and has a few bugs and glitches that may break your immersion, the overall experience is fantastic. The unique premise, addicting gameplay loop, and dreamlike visuals will have you hooked from beginning to end. Plus, thanks to its multiple endings, you'll likely be going back to Threshold over and over again to find out everything it has to offer.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake brings the first of the Erdrick trilogy to a modern audience, and it manages to do so with beautiful graphics and various nice quality-of-life improvements that make the ageless RPG yet again a must-play for newbies or even veterans to the Dragon Quest franchise.
Sky Oceans: Wings for Hire is a game with a lot of heart and ambition. It mildly revisits elements from JRPG classics like Skies of Arcadia while trying to bring new ideas into the fold. While the nostalgic appeal to the atmosphere, style, and gameplay has its merits, the game depends too much on it, making it a bit lackluster on many fronts.
Sword Art Online: Fractured Daydream is a fun time that ultimately falls a bit short of its lofty goals. While the story mode is a good time, there are issues here and there that prevent this from being a great experience. Moreover, the game's multiplayer offerings are fun to experience with friends, but the dwindling player count leaves major concerns for the longevity of this title.
The remake of Silent Hill 2 is a genuine masterpiece. While there are some technical issues here and there, Bloober Team did an exceptional job with the resurrected title's story, voice acting, gameplay, and visuals. Additionally, the attention to detail on display throughout the entire experience makes it a must-play for both returning fans as well as those who are playing Silent Hill 2 for the first time.
Monospaced Lovers is a game with potential, but has some pain points, such as solutions to puzzles being rather obtuse, and some confusing game design decisions that may or may not worsen the experience, depending on the targeted audience.
Sonic X Shadow Generations delivers all the thrills you could hope for with almost none of the drawbacks. This is one of the most easily accessible and enjoyable 3D entries in the series, making it a must-play for anyone who's interested. I hope this is the standard for the series going forward.
Super Mario Party Jamboree is the ultimate return to form for the Mario Party franchise. While there's some stuttering while playing online and the process of unlocking boards may seem a bit tedious, the game is incredibly fun to play, especially with friends and family. The boards are the best they've been since Mario Party 8, the minigames are incredibly fun and addicting, and the variety of different modes will keep you hooked if you're looking for a new experience.
Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered is a fun look back at the seventh console generation. It sometimes feels dated, has a narrative I skipped over, and can be clunky. But I can't deny how much fun I had with it. It has a world full of creativity I wanted to see more of. Gameplay elements that elevate the core loop are a lot of fun. And some creative set pieces and bosses I greatly adored. At its best, it feels like playing a horror movie, and I'm already on my next playthrough.
Alan Wake 2: The Lake House highlights the best parts of the base game. While there are some frustrating choices with certain enemies and weapons, the gameplay loop, narrative, and visual design are all brilliant. Further, the fantastic thesis statement at the heart of the DLC, as well as the numerous allusions to what the developers have planned next, will keep many fans hooked from beginning to end.
Yakuza Kiwami comes to Nintendo Switch with good, solid port that faithfully brings the lights and sounds of Kamurocho onto a handheld. Despite some flaws in performance, Yakuza Kiwami on Switch retains its smooth and fun combat system, rich and compelling story, and all the content of existing console and PC versions.
