So far, Marathon is an absolutely fantastic multiplayer shooter. The narrative manages to be compelling, even without a single-player campaign; the presentation is a treat to look at, and the gameplay still has me hooked. While I fear for its ability to deliver consistently good content in future updates, Bungie's care for the game thus far and the fact that it already has a committed fanbase have me hopeful and even excited to see how Marathon continues to grow in the coming weeks, months, and years. If you're a fan of multiplayer shooters, then this is a must-play.
Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection is a lovingly crafted package that preserves the charm of the original games while adding meaningful quality-of-life improvements and long-lost content. While some design choices and minor presentation issues remain, the collection delivers a fun experience that is well worth it for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
Etrange Overlord is a "sushi lane musical action adventure" game full of comedy and anime tropes that captivates anime watchers and gamers alike. The game takes some cues from the tower-defense genre to make for a compelling combat system, and despite some gameplay setbacks, Etrange Overlord manages to keep you hooked with its colorful cast of characters and an engaging story.
I went into DAMON and BABY with almost no experience in twin-stick shooters, but it ended up being a genuinely fun and charming surprise that kept me coming back. While the story and some mechanics feel undercooked, and losing progress can be frustrating, the combat, customization, and overall journey easily carry the experience. It’s not perfect, but it left me smiling by the end and excited to see where Arc System Works goes next.
Pokémon Pokopia has shattered pretty much all the expectations I had of this game, and it deserves every praise it can get. This is precisely the type of game that, even if you boot it up for just a few short minutes, I guarantee you there will always be something that can be done, and before you notice, it's been half an hour, and you're still engrossed in it. Whether that time be spent looking for artifacts, decorating your islands, or even meeting new Pokémon, there's something for everyone to enjoy here.
Scott Pilgrim EX is a great beat-em-up and entry in the Scott Pilgrim series. The narrative and presentation do a great job of paying tribute to other entries in the series, while the gameplay manages to be thrilling from beginning to end, thanks to a great world and satisfying combat. While the short length and small roster may make you question the $28.99 price point, if you're a fan of either Scott Pilgrim or beat-em-up games, then this is a must-buy.
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a triumphant return for the series. It maintains the gameplay core and narrative of the original game, while adding exciting new features like a new over-the-shoulder perspective and new mechanics. There are some major issues, such as pacing, the lackluster side stories, and the abundance of technical glitches. Still, the Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is a great time, regardless of whether you're a long-time fan or a newcomer to the series. Though you may want to wait till some of the issues are fixed.
Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 as a fantastic port that feels right at home on the platform. With all previously released DLC and over 150 Creation Club items included, Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition is rich in engaging content for RPG and FPS fans. Despite the muddy visuals in the Switch 2 version's 60 FPS mode, Fallout 4: Anniversary Edition is a standout port that shows Bethesda is listening and acting on feedback.
Rayman 30th Anniversary Edition is the best way you can play the original 1995 game. Tons of quality-of-life additions, as well as good emulation on modern platforms, make the game an easy recommendation. However, small problems like the lack of the original game's soundtrack prevent it from being excellent.
Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties is a remake and new side story that both improves and subtracts from the original Yakuza 3, making it a mixed bag of a title for those who wanted a definitive and improved version of the PS3 game. Although the new content additions and improved combat system bring joy, the game's new ending may sour fans who've been following the Yakuza series. The missing substories from the original leave a hole where the new content tries to fill, but it doesn't completely patch up what's sorely missed.
Maid Cafe on Electric Street is a story-driven adventure game with life simulation elements. A slice-of-life story that hits all the right notes, even if it has some pacing issues. The cafe management gameplay is not that engaging, but the characters help make up for it. Explore this town with stunning pixel art that will delight anyone. This is a fun but slow adventure. I recommend taking your time with it.
City Hunter is a remaster of the 1990 game released for the TurboGrafx-16/PC Engine. A product of the time that suffers from level design issues, partly offset by it's length and slight replayability. Although the remaster itself is nothing short of great. Giving all the modern additions you would want, along with multiple versions, and a great bonus catalogue to look through. The game itself has issues, but it's still a nice novelty to own, though one I would wait for a sale for.
Striking out as a Rider with your favorite Monstie buddies is more satisfying than ever before. Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection holds the main series traditions close to its heart while building on top of the already solid base of its predecessors. Egg Hunting, quelling unnatural events, monster raising, and roaming vast maps are still here, while being enhanced by some fresh, new ingredients, which fit snugly between the Environmentalist themes and Monster rearing gameplay. Through and through, Monster Hunter Stories 3 is a richly detailed and gorgeous experience that any fan of Monster-Raising RPGs is sure to enjoy.
I really wanted to like Homura Hime more than I did, because you can tell there was a lot of heart and thought put into it. Sadly, the fantastic combat and great art are let down by some questionable design choices and a lackluster story. I can only recommend Homura Hime to the diehard character action game fans out there who are looking for a decent game to blast through on a weekend.
Planet of Lana II: Children of the Leaf is an auditory and visual masterpiece. The clash of machine and nature may be an old trope, but it results in a beautiful aesthetic and soundscape. As for the gameplay, the puzzle-solving is passable, but the lack of replayability may turn some away.
The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince is a short and wholesome 2D puzzle-platforming adventure game that puts players in the shoes of a wolf-turned-princess who wants to right the wrongs for a prince she accidentally blinded. This title's gameplay is simplistic, but it makes way for a beautiful storybook aesthetic and story that will uplift anyone's spirit.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remastered is a great re-release for a game that has aged quite poorly. You can now toggle a third-person perspective instead of the original fixed-camera, yet there are still major issues with the combat and some significant glitches scattered throughout the game. That said, the new quality-of-life features and the addition of cut content and lost media make this a must-buy for fans of the franchise, regardless of any shortcomings.
Apopia: Sugar Coated Tale is a charming yet surprisingly dark adventure well worth experiencing. While the gameplay occasionally slips with backtracking, Mai's journey is one I'm very glad to have experienced.
Esoteric Ebb may borrow heavily from some of the greatest games in its genre, but it takes what it borrows and shapes it, creating something that still feels unique and fresh in its own right.
My Hero Academia: All's Justice is, at times, Byking's best entry in the series, taking some ambitious swings that don't always hit. The story mode, while frustrating at times, is servicable, and there are a few modes worth checking out. Unfortunately, limitations with the Rising system, a lack of stages, and the clunkiness of Team-Up Mission can leave you with a sour taste. All's Justice is a fun time for existing fans, but it makes no sense for a newcomer to start here.
