I love Hidden Cats in London for the cats and the art, but it has a lot of problems. For less than $2 USD, it’s fine. But I would pay a little more for a game that the developers actually play-tested and perfected.

Loved - Sonority
Jan 2, 2023

For me, Sonority hit all the right notes. The ingenious mechanics used to solve puzzles, the gradual introduction of more complex melodies and the delightful graphics and storyline were a joy to experience.

Liked-a-lot - Fit Puzzle Blocks
Dec 24, 2022

I love free games, free puzzle games that are fun. I love little paid addons for free puzzle games so you can support the dev if you love the game. In addition, I like accessible games that can be customized to be more user-friendly, and I love games that allow me to use a controller. While block puzzles may not be my puzzle of choice, I can see a well-made block puzzle game when I see it. And while playing Fit Puzzle Blocks, I definitely saw one.

Package Inc is a simple management simulation game which works well on a handheld Nintendo Switch. It’s great for whiling away some spare time – not overly taxing, but it’s complicated enough to require concentration.

Cats and Sokoban – Mimi’s Scratcher is a great game. Depending on what it costs, I could recommend this game to anyone who loves little games like this. Even if you’ve never played a Sokoban-like game, this is a great title to choose for your first one.

Liked-a-lot - The Block
Dec 16, 2022

Of course, The Block will only suit some gamers; those that like to have an end goal or more of a challenge won’t find it in this game. Instead, you will find a lovely, gentle, relaxing game to play and chill out with. The Block is soothing and the most uncomplicated, effortless game/digital toy I have ever played.

Liked-a-lot - River City Girls 2
Dec 16, 2022

River City Girls 2 is a fun and hilarious brawler that I enjoyed in both single-player and local co-op. However, it is more of the same and doesn’t feel like much has been really added to make it a stand-out sequel. The game still has an excellent mix of humour, vibrant graphics and fantastic music. If you loved the first game, then this makes for an easy recommendation. If you’re new to the series or just love brawlers, I would probably say this is slightly better than the first title, although you may be a little lost by the plot at the start of the experience. This game probably had me smiling more than the vast majority of titles I played this year, and that alone makes it a solid recommendation from me.

Siralim Ultimate is a bottomless pit of dungeon-crawling addiction that will keep you busy for hundreds of hours. The entry barrier may be steep for those totally new to the genre. The game focuses more on diving into the menus and stats than action, which may not work for some gamers. With patience and investment, you can enjoy this in long and short bursts, just not straight away. The developers clearly made a game for their fan base, who will likely be delighted to dive back into this on Switch. It is clear from the game’s main menu that the developers are also committed to supporting it post-launch. So long as you have the time free, this dungeon crawler may just make a new fan out of you and, most of all, keep you busy for a very long time.

Lil Gator Game, along with the host of other cozy indie games I’ve played and loved, are unique and special experiences that I’m glad I got to have. It’s so wonderful that finally gamers who don’t like a lot of the elements of AAA games can have a little piece of relaxing wonderful like Lil Gator Game and similar. I am so happy that indie games are much more able to reach audiences because my inner child was absolutely enthralled. While it’s a shame something so wonderful as this couldn’t have existed 20 years ago, indie developers are certainly making up for it now by releasing amazing, beautiful, wholesome, adorable, and nearly perfect games like this as passion projects. There is a lot of love in Lil Gator Game, and I can’t wait to see what this dev has in store for us next.

Dec 13, 2022

Aka is cute, smart, clever, and sad. It’s beautiful and a kid-friendly introduction to loss. Players can choose their own adventure here; there is no pressure to get anything done in this game. You can do as you like and take as much time doing those things as you want. That being said, it has its issues. I think this game just needs a little more love, and it could be a perfect relaxing game for the whole family.

Triangle Strategy is absolutely worth the asking price, even if you only play it once. It performs well in so many departments: gameplay, story, visuals, music, controls, and replayability. I’ve had no major complaints. It may take inspiration from venerable classics like Tactics Ogre and Final Fantasy Tactics, but Triangle Strategy feels modern enough to be accessible to newcomers. And thanks to the adjustable difficulty, it’s suitable for both SRPG veterans and beginners alike.

The world of Draconia’s floating islands is a beautiful setting for an open-ended adventure. An adventure where hunting for treasure and monsters can become equally addictive. Dragon Quest Treasures is an absolute delight to play, where you can take your time and discover all corners of Draconia without pressure. There is an amazing amount of quests to complete, accompanied by a recognisable cast of lovable characters. Hunting for shiny, sparking treasure is such fun and full of surprises.

Loved - Wavetale
Dec 11, 2022

Wavetale is a relaxing adventure game that will give pleasurable enjoyment to those who want to explore together with an emotional and hooking story. It is not a demanding game, in a good way. It is a short game that takes around 5 hours to complete, yet it can be more depending on how each player wanders across these oceans. This is what you are looking for in players who don’t feel they have much time to invest in playing or learning complex controls. It is relaxing, enjoyable, short, and fun, so check it out!

Liked-a-lot - Swordship
Dec 10, 2022

Swordship is fast-dodging fun on the Nintendo Switch. Speeding in at the last moment, this might just be one of the most original roguelikes I have played this year. With so many games in the genre focusing on platforming and action, the racing mechanics really deliver a fresh injection to the formula. The fast pace may be a bit much for gamers with slow or anxious reflexes. Unlocking content can be a bit of a drag in places. Regardless, this is an ideal pick for gamers with little time on their hands or who just want some fast arcade fun. Don’t let this speed you by.

At first glance, Kardboard Kings seems like just another run-of-the-mill management simulation. But the characters, the game design, the wonderful visuals, and the challenge of running your own card shop make this a worthwhile game to play. I will play this game some more to complete my growing card collection and try to beat Card Game Island. This is definitely one of the best management simulators on the market.

I have nothing negative to say about this game other than the graphics being a little too basic for my taste. However, Boots Quest DX may be the game for you if you’re in the market for a cute and cosy adventure game. Happy collecting!

Liked - Togges
Dec 7, 2022

Togges is a 3D platformer that distinguishes itself from others innovatively while maintaining many familiar elements of previous titles, for example, games like Super Mario Galaxy or Pikmin. It is enjoyable and occasionally challenging to figure out how to move around on each planet, which is this game’s beauty. It is about uncovering secrets, finding collectables, mastering the different behaviours of the diverse Togges, and exploring the vast depth of the cosmos. The story has its moments but wasn’t as hooking as expected. However, the colourful textures and vistas make it attractive to the eye, and in terms of music, SFX is quite good (Some funny screams of the Togges take the prize here). Overall it is an entertaining game with a fair amount of content to explore and exciting mechanics to play with.

Adventure Academia: The Fractured Continent is a fun game for a while. It’s maybe a game you would play in short bursts, as I did. I did like the battles in the game. However, the storyline got a little tedious after a while. Nevertheless, you will likely find what you want if this is your go-to game genre.

Disliked - Under The Moon
Dec 6, 2022

I don’t like this game. Under The Moon is in need of some honest playtesters that are looking to improve the game’s appeal. I think it could be amazing with some simple editing: Edit the riddles for grammar. Put a little more effort into the riddles that are just descriptions of objects. Make the roads much, much shorter. Worry less about ray tracing and worry more about making what is there interact well with the world.

One of my criteria for a good game is the desire to replay it, and the need for more – and Kukoos: Lost Pets is a really good game. The four worlds are so different and creative, and the creature’s abilities are refreshingly varied. It was an absolute delight to play and watch. I’m looking forward to replaying the levels and finding all those secret spots.
