Evil Dead: The Game blew away my expectations. As a fan of the series I was both excited and worried going in. Could an Evil Dead game would be done right in 2022? The answer is a resounding yes. This is absolutely the best example of an asymmetric multiplayer game to date and one that fans of the series and horror fans in general should check out.
Super Mega Baseball 4 is a highly addictive, arcade sports game that removes the fat and delivers a truly fun experience that is as customisable as it gets. The EA Sports BIG banner may be gone, but under its new publisher, Metalhead Software is doing a fantastic job of carrying the legacy it left behind.
Aliens Dark Descent is currently my favourite game of 2023, which is a massive surprise as it’s one of the most challenging games I’ve played in ages. That’s not usually my style of game. It has exceptionally well-realised game mechanics paired with challenging difficulty, all wrapped up in an engaging little story that adds to the ever-increasing lore of the Alien franchise. If you get the chance, please try this game but be warned, be prepared for pain!
Ghostrunner 2 is a wonderful game thanks to its fantastic level design and dialled-in mechanics. Although we are experiencing a hectic period of the year in terms of game releases, I highly recommend giving it a try. Be prepared, however, to “git gud” or in my case, be rubbish and keep trying till you get lucky.
Lil Guardsman is a point-and-click adventure where you interview people, almost always resulting in funny situations and dialogue. If that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, you may not enjoy the game. But if you have ever enjoyed a game in a similar vein to this I highly recommend checking it out. Hilltop Studios has created a fun, endearing and funny adventure that I won’t soon forget.
F1 2021 is yet another strong racing title from Codemasters, that not only delivers a fantastic experience for fans of both the genre and sport, but also offers the perhaps most accessible racing title to date.
Scarlet Nexus is another great JRPG from Bandai Namco and an exciting new IP that we hope to see more from in the future.
Sniper Elite VR is a blast to play. Not every idea lands, but the sniping and killcam more than carry the load. With an ample amount of levels to tackle, complete with challenges and high scores to chase, this should keep you busy for a while.
Mass Effect Legendary Edition might just offer a new look at some older games, but it still stands tall as one of the best and most memorable RPG series around.
Both the Darkside Detective and its sequel 'A Fumble in the Dark' are superb games. The characters, humour and outstanding graphics all combine to make one of the most memorable point & click games in recent memory. Trophy glitches aside, both of these games are must-buys!
Disco Elysium is a truly unique, narrative-driven point-and-click RPG that puts you in the shoes of a detective caught in the middle of a murder investigation… and so, so much more. While not without flaws, it’s well worth playing for those looking for a deeper story - and maybe even deeper meaning.
With the base game, four expansions and countless new items added to the hospital administrator sim, Two Point Hospital: JUMBO Edition is tremendous value - and tremendous fun!
Fuser is a great addition to the music genre. It has so many great tracks and does an excellent job of making you feel, and sound, like a pro. Given the full retail price, it is possible that the game fails to find an audience long term, but I hope that isn’t the case because Harmonix has created something kinda special here.
Golf Club Wasteland is one of the surprise Indie hits of 2021. A beautiful art style, heartwarming narrative, great soundtrack and fun gameplay loop combined with excellent level design all combine to make this a bonafide hit.
Life is Strange: True Colors is a rollercoaster that deals with a full range of emotions. The story is solid and well laid out, but the superb cast of supporting characters is what sets the game apart. Follow every instinct and take in all that Haven Springs has to offer, you will not regret it!
As yet another fantastic JRPG from Bandai Namco, Tales of Arise is a great entry in the long-running series - and one that should please players both old and new.
Astria Ascending is a good RPG that is quite easy to recommend despite its obvious shortcomings. While you’re able to adjust the difficulty, including removing most of the challenge if you want, the game isn’t holding your hand when it comes to quests and exploration - and thus it may not be for everyone.
All adds up to is FIFA 22 being the best it has been in years. Certainly in the Frostbite era. Changes to modes are oftentimes minimal, but at this point, it really is hard to knock a game that offers more modes than almost any other game on the market. Instead this year, EA has focused on what matters most – the gameplay. Subtle changes and additions all over the place have resulted in the number one sports game in the world finally, once again, feeling like a true representation of the sport.
Ghostwire Tokyo started off more linear than I expected, funnelling you through corridors and streets while introducing you to its insane world and creative ideas. The story could have been more memorable for sure, but this is a game that will be remembered for its setting. Tango Gameworks had a lot of ideas in mind when creating this game. Some worked, and some fell a little short. But overall, I really enjoyed my time with it and expect it to grow a cult following over time.
Slipstream is an excellent throwback to arcade racers of the late 1980s. It may have a limited selection of cars, but it makes up for that with a host of modes, some beautiful vistas, addictive gameplay and a soundtrack that compliments the action on-screen perfectly. If you have any nostalgia for old school racers then at £7.39 you cannot go wrong with this one!
