Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League tries to be what Rocksteady is best at, being a fantastic singleplayer that handles its IP characters well, while also being what Rocksteady was never equipped for, an ongoing live game. It fails in more aspects that it succeeds in. The potential is there but none of it is ever fully realized.
There are many ways to make a great remake, but Persona 3 Reload is probably one of the best examples of a faithful remake done right. Even though this game doesn’t reinvent the wheel when it comes to its core gameplay mechanics and systems, it adds small changes and enhancements that add up to make the experience feel fresh and engaging. Thanks to its great visuals, various quality-of-life changes, and updates to Social Links and other scenarios, Persona 3 Reload is now the definitive way to experience what is perhaps the best entry in the Persona series.
Granblue Fantasy Relink is exactly the type of ARPG that you'd just want to keep playing. Great visuals, strong gameplay, and a colorful cast of characters that bring it all together from a very strong start all the way to an enjoyable endgame.
Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth improves upon the previous game’s JRPG gameplay, all while adding more loveable characters, tons of side activities, and a fresh new setting, making this game one of the best in the series yet.
7 years after its predecessor, the King of the fighting genre makes a glorious return with Tekken 8 to remind everyone who does it best.
While the base game has always been technically impressive, The Last of Us Part II Remastered just makes all of it slightly better. There's not much you can do to improve something that's already fantastic to begin with. No Return mode and Developer Commentary track are great things to look forward to for returning players. For the ones who haven't played Part II yet, this Remastered version should be the only thing you'll consider getting.
Ubisoft starts 2024 right by releasing one of the least Ubisoft games out there. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is a refreshing re-introduction of the highly missed franchise as it comes back with a beautiful world to explore alongside a great gameplay loop to tie it all up.
Gungrave G.O.R.E Ultimate Enhanced Edition takes me back from the simple action games from the PS2 era. It has simple gameplay accompanied by a very linear navigation, while trying to innovate with its own mechanics making it nice Nintendo Switch handheld port. Unfortunately, despite being a better updated port, some may still find the gameplay too repetitive and lackluster.
More of what you liked, and what you didn't about the main game, Final Fantasy XVI Echoes of the Fallen is a fairly enjoyable extra adventure that plays it a bit too safe with what it has to offer.
This is one of the most polished AAA releases we have in recent memory. I encountered no major bugs, major performance issues, or even visual pop-ins. Final Fantasy 16 feels like a game that was made the way the creators intended it to be with the utmost care. There are no compromises made here for artificial extensions or hidden profit-making agendas. Final Fantasy 16 is a complete experience from start to finish and it is one that I’d say is worth taking.
The Devil In Me is a highly enjoyable thrill ride down a madman’s castle of horrors with impressive-looking visuals that elevates the subtle yet effective atmosphere. If you can tolerate a lackluster cast and a choppy first act, this is one horror experience that’s worth having.
What Sonic Frontiers has in potential in everything it introduces to the long-standing franchise is immediately lost in the way it’s all executed. Poor environments and a less-than-stellar gameplay loop derail the entire experience to a crawl.
God of War Ragnarok is a massive refining of what was achieved back in 2018. Engaging gameplay, a wide variety of stunning worlds to explore, and some of the best storytelling in gaming make this experience a must for anyone.
Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival has the same core gameplay as other Taiko titles, but it continues to be a fun rhythm game that's easy to learn and hard to master (especially in the higher difficulties). Though the highlight of this new release is the various game modes that it has, including the story mode.
Modern Warfare 2’s campaign looks, feels, and sounds fantastic with the IW 9.0 engine flexing its capabilities with much success. Characters feel a bit more fleshed out with added personalities that help the player connect and believe in their relationships with each other. However, the narrative is bogged down by tedious mission design, technical bugs, and an overreliance on sequel-baiting that doesn’t feel earned at all.
Valkyrie Elysium feels like it should’ve been released more than two console generations ago. The flashy combat system barely uplifts the experience from bland characters, uninteresting story, and outdated level design that borderline on feeling like it could’ve just belonged to a mobile game.
Soulstice’s excellent combat system singlehandedly saves the game from its own mundane presentation, technical problems, and uninteresting narrative. If you’re looking for an old-school action-adventure game, this might be worth a pickup.
Svoboda 1945: Liberation is a unique game that's touching and heartfelt. Even if the gameplay is quite simple, it takes advantage of the interactive medium well to tell its heartbreakingly beautiful story about the aftermath of World War II.
Steelrising isn’t just another forgettable soulslike experience. Its familiar gameplay is elevated by the stellar look and feel of the weapons alongside a visually striking reimagining of 1978 Paris. There is a lot to love her and a lot more to look forward to in terms of what Spiders can do with a future entry.
The Last of Us Part 1 Remake features massive improvements over the PS4 remaster when it comes to graphics, gameplay, and accessibility. While it may not feel like a full-blown remake at times given how well the original holds up to this day, the game is still highly recommended, especially for those who have yet to play the original.
